just witnessed the most incredible thing. after being read a passage from “love in the time of cholera” from a marriage officiant 5 stories up, down below, these two souls were married on the streets of upper manhattan. what. a. coronavirus. moment.
Did I hear this right?
President: She's shocked that I picked her. She's in a state a shock.
Reporter: I'm not, thank you Mr. President.
Trump: That's OK, I know you're not thinking, you never do.
Reporter. I'm sorry?
Trump: No, go ahead. Go ahead.
I have covered the rise of hate crimes against Muslims since 2016. And while this is some of the most horrific footage I've seen, when I was first about the mosque attack in New Zealand— I was not surprised.
This is a time where a white man can describe people in a Muslim majority country “semiliterate primitive monkeys” and have a primetime show on a major news network.
Last year
@HannahAllam
and I analyzed and found that Republican officials in 49 states have openly attacked Muslims with words and proposed legislation since 2015, and few have faced repercussions.
At a press conference, Nashville Mayor David Briley called for "comprehensive gun reform" so that "weapons of war" can be taken "off the streets of our country."
Two days before what would have been my 4th anniversary at BuzzFeed News, I learned that my position has been eliminated.
Today is effectively my last day one of the best breaking news teams in the country.
(Small thread don’t worry)
Even militias get to use model mosques as target practice and post them to YouTube. When I wrote this, did I think one day the mosque wouldn't be just a model? Yes, I did.
I didn't like my reaction, believe me. But, you see, this is the culmination of a long line of increasingly anti-Muslim rhetoric — rhetoric that goes completely unchecked by societies at large.
Around the country, when Muslims try to build mosques, normally mundane city halls meeting become widely attended, and places for heated discussions. People evoke rarely used local zoning laws as barriers to halt mosques:
Did you know in 28 cities in 21 states across the country, people held "anti-Sharia" rallies? They did, and it was vile, and bigoted at times. Did you notice?
I have a feeling almost nobody in the US knows the dark story behind this meme. The man is Jawad Bendaoud, who was just sentenced to 4 yrs in prison for renting his flat to the 2015 Paris ISIS attackers. He was originally cleared of charges last year but prosecutors appealed.
"Islamophobia is a winning message. It won resoundingly tonight. Racism won resoundingly tonight. Racism, sexism, all won resoundingly tonight,"
@KhaledBeydoun
told a room full of Muslim Americans on election night in 2016.
And for the mosques already there, they become targets for attacks. In this case, the police didn't believe the ripping of Qurans was motivated by hate:
An exclusive statement from the former Uber driver Kate, after the NFL issued a 3 game suspension for QB Jameis Winston for touching her “in an inappropriate and sexual manner without her consent.”
WSJ EXCLUSIVE: Prosecutors in Baltimore are asking a judge to vacate Adnan Syed’s conviction for the 1999 murder of Hae Min Lee and that he be given a new trial. The case was turned into the hit first season of the podcast “Serial”
"An Oklahoma lawmaker who once called Islam "a cancer in our nation that needs to be cut out" has now successfully proposed an interim study to determine the threat and effect of radicalization."
"The FBI arrested the Boston-area man allegedly hoarding weapons and materials that could make explosives. The FBI also said it found handwritten notes that threatened “violence against members of the Islamic religion.”
One last thing. Every time I would write about this stuff, I would get rewarded with heinous emails, rude comments in the story, or replies, like this one I just received:
Primary results just began coming in and it already looks like Ilhan Omar will win her primary to take Keith Ellison’s seat in Congress - making her, along with Rashida Tlaib of Detroit, the first Muslim women in Congress.
I’m definitely looking for work, I have great clips, and I’ll have a neat little tweet-thread soon about the badass reporting I’ve done. DMs are open. But for now, I’m going to focus on myself, and this 16 hour flight home. ✌🏽
Ugh, I just noticed a missing word in my first tweet. I meant to say "when I was first *told* about the mosque attack in New Zealand — I was not surprised."
I'm very excited to announce that I have joined

History has been made tonight with the first Muslim American woman elected to Congress. And it's still early. Ilhan Omar in MN is expected to follow soon.
For nearly four years it was my job as a journalist to cover the rise in anti-Muslim violence and sentiment. What I saw was a troubling trend. Chilling crimes and casual hate speech that went unchecked. My thoughts in

“We did it. We won. Oh my god,” Omar said when she finally took the stage, after supporters danced around her at the podium. “I have always said, you get what you organize for. And today you all organized for this big victory.”
Bacon greased bullets, loyalty tests, unabashed insults and cruel bigoted stereotypes — Yes, your state and local Republican officials have been bashing Muslims.

and I counted.
I’ve never had any delusions about the long hours, the salaries, and job security in this profession — despite it all, I just wanted to do meaningful work. Work that mattered. And I can confidently say I have done just that, and more.

Activist Linda Sarsour says in the past the courts have ruled that slavery, Japanese internment and segregation was legal. “Just because something is legal does not mean it’s moral.”
Latest stats on detained immigrant children according to HHS Office of Refugee Resettlement:

The unique thing about my layoff story: I’ve been on vacation for two weeks, and received the news over the phone an hr ago while I stood on a street in Delhi. Now, I write this as I wait to go through airport security. Being laid off from 8k mi away doesn’t make this any easier.

Four men were arrested in rural Illinois for possession of a machine gun today, and evidence collected by the FBI, according to this affidavit, suggests that three of those men were involved in the August 2017 bombing of a mosque in Minnesota.
In the arrest affidavit filed by the Fredrick Police Department, accusing Christopher Watts of killing his family, Watts claimed his wife killed their two daughters after he announced he wanted to separate, and he strangled her in retaliation.
Louisiana State Attorney General's Office decides not to pursue charges against two white officers who fatally shot Alton Sterling, a 37-year-old black man. The decision comes nearly 11-months after the Justice Department made the same decision.
