A thread on Declan Rice.
Along with Rodri, he is transforming the DM role from a defensive-minded position into one which controls all aspects of the game.
Here we take a look at
- Controlling the tempo of in-possession play
- Controlling defensive spaces
Arsenal Against the Brighton Build Up
The De Zerbi build up play tested the tactical intelligence of the Arsenal players and staff.
Let's take a look at the SOLUTIONS they found to the questions Brighton asked.
🧵THREAD
How Germany have dominated Scotland in the first half.
- 4-2-3-1 shift into a 3-3-1-3 when in possession
- Kroos dropping into LCB with time on the ball
- Wirtz and Musiala occupying Scotland wing-backs
- Germany full-backs high position to avoid being marked with time on the
Mourinho on tactics and strategy.
‘The tactics are the model, the principles. So let’s say, day one, I come in, I want Chelsea to be a team that is always pressing, high up the field, high pressing, blocking, that is what I want. The basic tactics are made up of, say, twenty
The Newcastle set-up against Spurs yesterday may have set a blueprint for how to play against the inverted full-backs.
From a high-press man-to-man 3-4-3, Newcastle quickly shifted into a low block, zonal, 5-4-1.

The De Zerbi and Brighton Build Up
De Zerbi has looked to mix his build up play with Brighton to avoid predictability.
Below is how he links the play through the centre of the pitch with a 4-2-4 or 3-4-3 formation.
Look for these patterns tonight against Palace.
Compared to the game at Anfield, Arsenal were happy to let the Liverpool CBs have the ball and keep a vertical and horizontal compactness.
At Anfield, Jesus stopped VVD from playing diagonal passes to Salah. Without that threat today, Arsenal were happy to drop and keep a
Germany, under Nagelsmann, are proving to be one of the best-structured teams in the tournament.
Regular Positioning
- Kroos overloading on the defensive line
- Musiala, Gundogan & Wirtz looking to receive in red zone
- Width held by full-backs
Regular Patterns of Play

An explanation of Brighton playing INTO pressure from De Zerbi.
Playing AWAY from pressure always seemed the logical coaching method.
Brighton make these patterns look very simple and free up a spare man to progress into the opposition half
Arsenal's defensive record is down to a proper team effort. Their press is well organised and in Odegaard and Jesus they have two of the best pressers from attacking positions.
The pressing against Brighton ensured Brighton had to play into their last resort. Playing out wide.
The Man City 'De Bruyne' Activation Practice.
- Receive in half space, pass inside of the full-back for winger's movement beyond
- Winger receives wide, make inside run beyond full-back before crossing/shooting
'Control the centre, control the game'
Lets's take a look at the different possession tactics and positioning that teams are using to overload central areas.
⬇️
Man United In-Possession
- Mazraoui inverting as Casemiro dropping into back three. He picks up good positions. Attributes suited?
- Players coming towards the ball. Fernandes main threat in behind
Out of Possession
- Fernandes and Mount start deep. Unable to pressure ball.
England Pressing v Denmark
- heavily outnumbered in advanced positions
- duel roles for Saka, Foden and Bellingham
- lack of pressing support from Rice and Trent
- large distances to cover to get pressure on the ball
The De Bruyne Playing Pattern
A technical playing pattern that Pep Guardiola uses.
- Receive in the half-space between the lines
- Make runs in behind the full-back from the half-space
More Pep practices are available on our website.
Arsenal didn't just park the bus. They went from a high press to a low block very quickly.
They turned the ball over a limited number of times due to City's control. Arsenal couldn't link the passes to create the opportunities from these turnovers.

He didn't stand a chance.
Selling their best two players after promotion without ever replacing them.
Tough gig for the next manager and it will soon be about preparing for a promotion charge next season.
It’s offside.
It’s not about if the GK can save it.
It’s if the offside player is in the way of an opponent (the GK) to play or challenge for the ball.
It’s not even debatable.

It's a system that goes back to the beginning of football but man to man marking is becoming a common trend in the modern game.
What is it? How do teams use it? And why are so many teams using this strategy?
Arsenal are jumping between two high presses.
A diamond press with Saka and Trossard coming really narrow.
A full press where they leave Maddison free with a centre back ready to jump (led to 1st goal)
Despite losing the game and the tie overall, Porto and Conceição gave a defensive masterclass over the two games.

I miss Bielsa in England.
Being able to study his style of play on a weekly basis and tap into coaches and who worked under him at Leeds gave a fascinating insight.
Easy to see why he’s inspired a generation of top coaches.
A bit more on Thomas Frank and his 5-3-2.
They managed to beat Man City twice last season and play a very similar set up against the bigger teams in the league.
Lets take a look at the roles and responsibilities and how they are coached⬇️

Animating this to make it simple to view.
Notice the role of Alonso, as the coach, to add intensity and a realism to a technical practice.
Even at the top level it’s easy for players to go through the motions in repetitive practices.
Arsenal want control, and they want the ball.
They pressed Villa yesterday and tried to take Martinez out as an option. This meant leaving TWO spare players on the opposite side of the pitch as Odegaard divided his position between his mark and the goalkeeper.
Arsenal scored another two goals from corners yesterday from very similar set pieces against Newcastle.
The corner routine has been used consistently throughout the season. The details are well rehearsed, and the delivery is EXCELLENT.

Eddie Howe showed an adaptability last night as he changed his pressing structure.
It was a massive move for Newcastle. Their pressing structure has remained relatively unchanged since Howe joined the club.
Given time on the training ground, Howe can implement
new patterns
England's system shift from 4-2-3-1 out of possession to 3-2-2-3 in possession.
- Walker is building in a three with centre-backs
- Trippier holding the left width with a high position (good positioning)
- Foden inside next to Bellingham
- Trent rotated with Saka initially
Having worked under Red Bull staff for two years, I have developed an understanding of five key areas with 72 used concepts.
Jesse Marsch gave an insight into some of these last night on Sky.
We delve into the rest.

Jesse Marsch recently appeared on Sky Sports, where he explained the Red Bull methodology and how he attempted to incorporate it into his training methods.
We have created an animation to showcase one of Marsch's preferred training exercises, which incorporates Red Bull's

Arsenal's defensive record has improved this season and Declan Rice is a huge reason why.
His understanding of the DM position in incredible. It's very rare the Arsenal midfield line is broke. His protection of the centre half keeps Arsenal CBs in their structure.

Arsenal are performing this 6v5 + 2 activity to simulate breaking a block of defenders at the edge of the 18. Defending team counters to 2 mini goals.
Spain Build-up Positional Play
Opposition Full man-to-man press
- Recognition as a team that the opponent is on a full press
- Stretch the pitch with the front 3, maintaining the width
- Rodri, Pedri & Ruiz drop deeper to attract pressure
- Direct passes to front 3
The full back trap.
It’s been coached for years and in possession teams are finding solutions.
One solution - don’t have full backs in their traditional space.

SCAN - Try always to see the ball, danger and the next pass
STEP IN - Step in with the ball and past the mannequin to progress
SUPPORT - Collective movements beyond and below
SUPPLY - Quick diagonal snap passes into the back foot

Spain were superb in the final against England.
Their build-up play allowed control throughout the first half. England set up in 4-2-3-1 and allowed Spain to control the play with their spare centre-back.

To win anything you need elite players with a winning mindset.
Asking them to do anything but give their very best makes no sense at all.
A lot of pointsto take from this video with Nagelsmann and Rangnick.
- structure to keep close distances for counter press
- structure to prevent counter attacks
- forcing counter attacks into wide areas
- positioned to lock half spaces
The basic, unopposed practices that work towards building a defensive structure.
The balls represent an opponent on the ball and the City players shift accordingly.
Another side rotation practice, this time a technical one.
The practice can be manipulated to work on collective movements related to your team. These may be between two or three players.

His ability in any situation in tight areas is outstanding. Yesterday I seen United, although only a few times, building through the centre of the pitch
Scanning, control under pressure and vision to play forward 👍🏻
Pep tactically evolves each season, but the fundamentals of his press remain the same.
- Compact units (vertically and horizontally)
- One midfield player ready to jump to support centre forward
- Wide players taking position off the DM
Well coached teams are constantly looking to get a switch of play with throw ins.
Repeated practice (which the players hate) at retaining the ball from throw ins is a huge part of the game. Retain the ball and creating opportunities is an even bigger part!
