Suffering isn’t a competition. It’s about remembering our humanity and supporting each other through hard times, no matter where we’re from. Offering compassion and resources to people in need doesn't take away from other communities' suffering.

No one is forcing people to care about “stuff,” it’s about showing compassion for all of those suffering. The residents in Altadena who have lost their generationally owned homes, rented homes, apartments - are not in mansions. The vast majority of these people aren’t wealthy and regardless of the level of “wealth”, most people don’t have a second one lined up. This is an area where the POC communities were historically able to afford a house.

Right now is not the time to say, “They’re just things, at least you’re safe/have means/ insurance/ etc.” For many, their homes were more than just things—they were their foundation, safety, and sense of stability. Ppl are grappling w unimaginable loss, watching the lives they’ve built go up in flames. Be there to listen, not to offer silver linings. Often, the most supportive thing we can do is simply sit w someone, hold space for their grief and heartbreak, and offer a helping hand ❤️🩹
