I think British journalists are mostly driven by spite so when he didn’t answer the direct question, Piers got angry and the switch got set to the “On” position.
I think the collapse of media and everyone’s pivot to blogs and newsletters has only underlined how vital good editors are. Good editors are harder to find than good writers honestly.
i spent months talking to people who has lived through the AIDS crisis about their memories of dancefloors and dance partners, and i shared a lot of tears with men and women who are now in their 60s and 70s talking about loved ones who just disappeared.
the architect Scott Bromley (Studio 54) kept a notebook of people he lost starting in 1981 and the names kept building like an avalanche. it is the stuff of unfathomable tragedy. love becoming death, the whole country turning its back on you.

god isn’t the next part of this story when he flung an entire deck at a wine bottle and the guy’s card was curled up in the bottle’s neck? Gives me chills.
but through all that there was joy. you had to find an escape. and for so many that came in the form of dancing until dawn. that's what these tapes represent, the sound of defiance in the face of catastrophe.

Probably tangentially related but the woman saying “Japanese culture is just a settler colonial coded appropriation of Chinese culture” should count in this column as well.

I went to Frankfurt and Detroit to visit two very different techno museums, and tell a larger story about music, cultural inheritance, and community
i'm speaking solely as a freelancer who does not want a staff job, but it feels like the spigot for assignments has been slowly shutting the last 8 weeks as the wider media landscape gets grimmer. it feels... different this time? like real (bad) structural shifts are happening
also, he's not a twitter guy but Joe D'Espinosa's tireless work in remastering tapes that were often of questionable quality is central to this story. there is a tape in here for everybody, it's a truly incredible project
over the last couple weeks, i've heard from more than a few really accomplished freelancers that they're done with the industry. editors are spread too thin, budgets have been whittled down to nothing. these are well-known writers. it makes me really anxious.
It’s funny to think this is controversial, but editors should feel obligated to respond to every pitch even if it’s a curt “no thanks.” It’s a writer’s responsibility to take no for an answer, or understand the difference of a “no” and a “no but here’s a crack in the door.”
Please someone let me write an essay about how cultural algorithms are no different than payola was for music or interior design magazines were for furniture. You think everyone had their own unique style and music taste in the 70s?!
@Evanryt
ooooof this is where you say "my vocal chords aren't cooperating" and pull the plug on the tour. IIRC the same thing happened with SZA when she was playing <1000 cap venues after Ctrl blew up. a good team knows to err on the side of a spot that will guarantee a sellout show.
@rebexxxxa
i finally read it and am a little disappointed it didn't go into the genesis of all these anxieties and instead tried to make me feel sympathetic to the woman who has a kindergarten consultant!
Tonight at Columbia Jewish students led a full Shabbat service at the Gaza solidarity encampment. Minutes later Muslim students had their evening prayer service. All surrounded by love.
Please do let the world know: there are ways to live that aren’t being a paranoid bigot.
@parismarx
that would at least make the car an interesting aesthetic exercise, but I truly believe he designed this like a high school kid doodling in his notebook.
I wrote about the Chinese restaurant that gets name checked by Kendrick in a song and then Drake films a music video in it and these are two grown men fighting about who knows what.
A lot of popular writing (on newsletters/blogs especially) is… some of it is straight up bad but most of it just seems like it could have used an editor who can ask questions and poke holes.
@bauzilla
@JohnCena
also we got Warner Brothers Animation to go on the record about the movie for the first time so this kind of counts as news breaking.
@Tyler_A_Harper
I agree with your thesis but this quote doesn’t consider density which seems weird. Of course there are more Trump voters in LA or NYC than rural counties; more people live in my neighborhood than the CO town my dad grew up in.

Jann unabashedly loves that rock became a highly commercial/capilastic exercise, he has a house in the west village, gets to say he’s friends with all these famous people, etc. But yeah that part stuck out to me too, dude loves being a rich guy with Bruce on speed dial.
@nkulw
All these businesses are also owned by the same massive media concerns that dominate linear TV. It’s not like any of them were scrappy upstarts. Hulu was started by damn Fox and NBC!
But because everything has been hollowed out, there’s this feeling that the current blogosphere is more serious than its predecessors. Defector and Hellgate are notable exceptions here, but that’s also because they’re staffed by actual editors and journalists.

This feels like an ironic conclusion to the joke about how only op ed columnists needed to be scars of ChatGPT because of how inane the tool is. I never expected they’d just start using it themselves!

i think is the great and dangerous trick mainstream media is playing: they highlight a very small fraction of transphobic people who are angry and make it seems like they’re 50% of the population based of how much you hear about them.

What does “what if we dressed like 9/11 never happened?” even mean? I know we’re all trying to get zingers off but you have to at least create a narrative vector for that criticism to ride on.

the most annoying aspect of this argument is that it treats art like a one-way street when it’s about the constant conversation between art, artist, surroundings, audiences, etc. These are people who think ChatGPT is actually talking to them.

i am *not* a high wattage freelancer so maybe it's just this odd middle i inhabit but that seems to be the feeling among a lot of people i talk to. it feels like things may be sort of "over" for lack of a better term.

People don’t write “lol” after everything because of some fear of conflict, it’s because the constant hum of detached and decontextualized text-based communication has made it impossible to intuit the tone or emotion of a message.
