If you weren’t in UST or LUNA before the crash, you could buy some discounted UST on an exchange, then bridge it to Terra Network to buy LUNA, then bridge back to the exchange to sell.

This arbitrage mechanism was still possible after the network was shut down and restarted on May 13th. I was able to burn 8200 UST (priced at $.11) to mint over 6B LUNA (priced at $.000039) on the Terra chain.

This mechanism works the other way too. If UST starts to negatively de-peg from USD, you can burn UST and mint LUNA at a price of $1 USD. This means you will get full value for your LUNA even when UST is less than USD.

My heart goes out to those who got rekt on LUNA. I wanted to share this as I think it may be useful information for future algo stables (if you chose to take the risk when the next one shows up).

UST is an algorithmic stable where the peg is maintained programmatically. This leaves the coin vulnerable to attack, as we saw last week. Due to Terra's balancing mechanism, as users fled to LUNA from UST, the price of LUNA dumped with the exponentially increasing supply.

Of course, you'd have to bridge the newly minted LUNA to another network to offload on exchanges. This step depends on the liquidity in the market as you can't sell without buyers. Bitfinex, Crypto_com, FTX, Binance, Uniswap would have been good options.

Between LUNA and UST, there is an arbitrage mechanism designed to incentivize people to burn LUNA and mint UST when UST is worth more, getting a 1-2% gain from swapping your LUNA to UST.

If I sold all 6B at the recent high of .0007 ETH / LUNA, this would have net $4.2M. However, there is not enough liquidity to get this price for all 6B, so I chose to sell in small tranches after bridging the LUNA to ETH mainnet (which took 8 hours).

This increases the total supply and reduces the price of UST to bring the stable back to its programmed value of $1 USD. Since LUNA is burned to mint UST (for those juicy 1-2% gainz) the supply of LUNA also decreases, driving the price up.

You may be at risk of impermanent loss, but it’s a lot safer to be there then in LUNA which had so much room to fall.

With this mechanism, you could have minted around 700M LUNA by burning only 1000 UST ($100 USD) as the price of LUNA was getting exponentially closer to 0. At the time of writing, that would be worth about $330,000. Talk about an asymmetric bet.
