The problem with scaling through volume is that you also scale your total time spent fulfilling - hence, without the right structure you end up with less time to do the work that allowed you to make more money - and so you crash and burn.

A Hard Pill To Swallow: Your life is simply a reflection of how you spend your time. Your calendar reveals your priorities. Look at where your time is going - that’s what you’re actually optimizing for. You can talk about what matters to you, what you value, all day long. But your calendar tells the truth. Where your time goes, your focus goes. Where your focus goes, your results follow. If your time is spent on low value tasks and distractions or on putting out fires and things that don’t move the needle Then that is what you’re optimising for. If your time is spent on mindless, hedonistic pleasures, blaming others or avoiding problems Then that is what you’re optimising for. The problem? Most people don’t even realise they’re doing it. They tell themselves they’re working hard. They tell themselves they’re doing what they “have to do”. They tell themselves they’re too busy to make any changes and fix their damn problems. But the truth is always in your calendar. Do you plan your days? Do you stick to that schedule? Do you let fires and distractions take over? Do you prioritise the right tasks? Do you have boundaries? Do you know what matters? If your answer is “no” to any of those questions, something needs to change - because you’re optimising for the wrong things. Movement and not effectiveness. False urgency and not impact. Going with the flow over structure. If your goal is important, then the work required to achieve your goal is just as important. Because the thing cannot be more important than what’s necessary to get the thing. And how do you achieve your goal? You spend time doing the right work. So your schedule is, quite literally, you assigning time to work on what matters - or at least it should be. If you’re not structuring your day around moving forward, or if you break your schedule, you’re actively saying your goals are not important by saying that the work required to achieve them is not important. And yes, it can feel like it’s not your fault. But it is. Your time is in your control. How you spend it is up to you. Sure, you might have to, and should, set boundaries with employees and clients in terms of communication. Sure, you’ll have to cut out pointless tasks. Sure, you’ll have to dedicate start up time to building systems. And - maybe scariest of all - you’ll have to take some responsibility for your schedule and plan your damn days around high-leverage work and leave the fires for later. But all of this compounds. All of this builds into you having more control. At the end of the day, your calendar reflects your true priorities. And if progress is one of them, then optimise how you spend your time for progress - not distraction. Effectiveness, not busyness. Leverage, not fires. Not only will you make more progress, but you’ll do it working less. - Ross PS: If you want to learn how to create a time-impact asymmetry, so you can reclaim hours every week whilst still growing your business I’ll show you how in under 10 minutes. If You Feel Stuck in Business, Ask Yourself These 4 Questions: - What’s the one constraint bottlenecking my growth? - If I could only work 4 hours per day, what would I focus on? - Where am I making things more complex than they need to be? - What am I avoiding that I know I need to do? Stuck isn’t a feeling. It’s a signal. Pay attention.
