Can we just stop talking bollocks about the rugby world cup & just enjoy the achievement in the here and now. I mean, what's the fuckn point of it all if everyone starts "looking forward" to the next big thing as soon as the latest big thing is over. Please and thanks.

I'm one of 3,500 at Cork vs Lk MFC semi in Gaelic Grounds. Masks compulsory inside. Stewards patrolling the crowd & shouting that they're compulsory. Guy on PA repeating it regularly, stewards outside and inside turnstiles ditto. In a open air stadium 50,000 capacity. Oppressive.
He is actually a rock of sense, and generally always has been. One of the most intelligent and independent-minded sports people ever to come out of this country.
Ronan O'Gara goes into the Mount Rushmore of all-time great Irish sportsmen. Epic playing career followed now by two monumental coups in European club rugby, and a lot more to come at international level too. Plus his charisma and courage as a speaker in the public domain also.
George Hamilton does a remarkable job at all these athletics championships. Hundreds of names of athletes from all over the world and across so many races and disciplines and always seems to be on top of the huge amount of associated data that's required for every commentary.
Fwiw I think mainstream Ireland is thoroughly pissed off with been hectored & lectured endlessly by the confederacy of woke craw-thumpers in academia, the NGOs, RTÉ & media. These are basically modern clerics & pulpit-bashers - & today they've been told to f.r.o.

The black cherry on top of a lovely 24 hours. The reaction on Twitter has been unexpectedly moving. Really so grateful for all your well wishes.
It's been an honour and a privilege to help a special sportsman in the telling of his story.
Proud to have collaborated with Keith on this. Bar maybe Paul McGrath, I can't think of another Irish sportsman who has performed at the elite level for well over a decade while battling with so many private struggles too. He has lived every day the meaning of the word resilience
Sincere and grateful thanks to everyone who has supported this book pre and post the publishing.
It's Keith Earls's story. I know of very few athletes in Irish sport who suffered for their art the way he did. My absolute respect for his courage and dignity and authenticity.
Ffs. Gavin James, Kodaline et al. Synthetic emotion, pasteurised lyrics, homogenous passion, shallowness masquerading as depth, glorified boy band muzak. Not an artistic spine between them. Daniel O'Donnell without the knitwear.
Absolutely loved the crack between Keane and
@GNev2
tonight. Punditry that managed the rare feat of being both serious and comedic.
The pair of them were right, the pair of them were wrong; they also showed why their United team was so good for so long. 👏

Me mother Kathleen last Sunday on her way to her sister Alice's 90th birthday do. Both from that generation of magnificent mná who contributed mightily and immeasurably to the great work of Irish nation-building after 1922. Born on a small but productive Leitrim farm in the 1930s
Interesting dynamics going on here. General agreement the players shouldn't have sung the song. But soon as the Sky journo interviews one of said players, the hackles go up here, including among journos, and the familiar Irish tribalism takes over - inferiority complex and all.
Didn't expect to get this delivery today cos I didn't know the ghostwriter got one as well as the author

Anyway a very nice Christmas gift to receive. My thanks to
@AnPostIBAS
and
@easons
for the award and indeed the trophy.
No humility in that statement from Cowen; the barely concealed resentment & entitlement; all redolent of the brother in his career too; a sort of provincial arrogance about them both, big fish in a small pond, remained old-school FF when they were young enough to adapt & change.
Absolutely chuffed for this gent. Even by pro rugby's brutal standards of physical and emotional punishment, Earls has been to hell and back.
On top of everything else, he's been a great survivor. It's lovely to see him make the ton today and to do it front of his adored family.
Many thanks for all the lovely comments re the Leitrim '94 piece. Can I say it wouldn't have happened without the total support of my gaffer
@johnjgreene
He commissioned it, then cleared the decks to accommodate all 5,000 words. And took huge care over the page layout and design.
Hoping that Patrick Kielty will knock it out of the ball park tonight. I think he will. It was a great shout to give him the gig. He did the hard yards on the comedy circuit and has amassed a huge amount of showbiz experience. Best of luck to him.

Cops go to tend a shot and wounded criminal. He fucks them out of it, family members abuse them. One cop says it's typical behaviour. The ambulance turns up. In due course, free legal aid, a court process, maybe prison. Welfare from cradle to grave. Rinse and repeat.
I'm all for giving the GAA a good kicking when it deserves it - and even when it doesn't, just to keep tabs on it. Last wk a professor of psychology, no less, wrote the single most ill-informed critique of the GAA I've ever read. Physician, heal thyself.
Mick has already pocketed €1.8 million for 10 Ireland games in his second coming. The additional €1.2 million golden handshake is morally objectionable for reasons outlined here. McCarthy should give it back.
James McClean. The very definition of a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. Not an independent thought in his head, nor an ounce of research or study or due diligence. Maximum conviction, minimum information. A complete clogger in politics as in football.
Among many wishes for her, would love to see Kellie being able to make a good income in the years ahead and enjoy a comfortable life. Amateur boxers with Olympic medals seldom enjoy financial reward commensurate with their sacrifices and their achievements.

There seems to have been some sort of sociological syndrome mutating for decades, whereby the more that the beneficiaries of the welfare society receive from the State, the more angry and alienated they become against said State . . .

This hymn to Maradona from his old team mate Jorge Valdano is the tribute in death elevated to an art form. The best piece I have ever read about El Diego. Translated from the Spanish by

Dear old Val Joyce has slipped quietly through the doors of the great speakeasy in the sky.
A maestro of late night radio, an immaculate curator of the nocturnal canon, fondly remembered for his velvet voice and tranquil company in the wee small hours.
Buenas noches, Val.
RTÉ Sport imo did Jerry proud at this Olympics. Would go so far as to say their standards editorially were world class, fwiw the best overall I've ever seen from the station.
For those too young to have seen Paul McGrath play, this is a good example of his exceptional ability; such quick feet for a big man, it gave him this terrific recovery speed. Hagi was sure he'd left him for dead here.
Ah Jesus. Sinéad. Gutted. This one is an awful shock.
Artist, warrior, a voice from the end of the world. God bless her. May her troubled and luminous soul finally be at peace.
Good on Mo Salah for becoming Liverpool's all-time Premier League scorer on 129 goals.
It's a bit of a shame for Ian Rush that he scored over 300 of his goals before Sky Sports existed and therefore they don't count.
Mawdsley is devastated in that post-race interview with
@DavidGillick
but u could see her fighting for every single yard of that track down the home straight. Battling & battling for every single yard. Massive heart & soul showed by all four athletes in their race of a lifetime.

The sheer purity of the happiness on display here would do your heart good. The pure adrenaline of the joy coursing through her system, it's wonderful.
Post race interview from our European U20 Long Jump Champion, Elizabeth Ndudi💚

An amazing performance from Ndudi and a historic Gold for Ireland

footballer Seán Carrabine for playing every game with his socks up to full height rather than the typical ankle-level job. They're an endangered species in the GAA, the lad who keeps his socks up, and should be appreciated accordingly.

My niece at the James Bond premiere in London last night with none other than the fabulous Naomie Harris (Miss Moneypenny), who I'm told was extremely nice to the starstruck teenager.

Even by vintage Munster standards the sheer heart & guts of that performance is up there with anything from the annals. Huge competitive integrity under the pump 2nd half. & then in the heat of battle to engineer a very smart winning try with 5 mins left. Outstanding achievement.
On this day in 1985 (or strictly speaking, just after midnight on the 29th) Dennis Taylor defeated Steve Davis to win the Snooker World Championship. 18.5 million viewers burned the midnight oil to watch the final frame.

The late & truly great AA Gill famously gave Ballymaloe a stinker of a review in his Sun. Times restaurant column. The following week Darina was on Marian Finucane (RIP) radio show. Gill's review was the talk of the food industry here. Not a word of it was mentioned on the show.
Came across this funeral in Dublin today. Paddy Cahill was his name. He was well loved and respected by the sound of things. Bicycle-drawn hearse brings cycling advocate on his last journey

who in his role as a coroner, a GP and former GAA president, fought the good fight against Ireland's culture of alcohol abuse. He saw the consequences all too often; his concern and his campaigning came from the heart.
Jenson Button's dismal post-race interview with Hamilton is further proof that most TV sport has no respect for editorial standards. They have 'personalities' doing a reporter's job and the result is that pitiful effort after one of the biggest sports stories of the year.

Liverpool single-handedly preserving the integrity of the Premier League as a competition the last few seasons by keeping Man City's Monopoly money death grip from completely destroying it. They've done incredibly well to sustain these title races for as long as they have.

You see that bit of North Leitrim between Sligo and Donegal? It's on the coast too. Or maybe wind speeds are going to decelerate there in that precise spot? Amazing the amount of times Leitrim gets forgotten in the Met Eireann warnings, forecasts and reports.
Wind Warnings have been updated for Storm Callum for Thursday night and Friday morning.
Orange level for coastal counties, Yellow level inland.
Note: Wind strengths remain the same, changes to validity times.

An honourable man, Mr Tidey, as are the families of the late Patrick Kelly and Gary Sheehan. It has been a privilege as well as a responsibility to tell their stories faithfully. We hope that readers will be as gripped by the narrative as we were when researching and writing it.

So true Seán. The sight of it would make one really wonder how many people are out there who just don't have any sense of citizenship or of a greater good beyond themselves. I find that photo more depressing than a lot of the recent Covid news.
This is unhinged, fanatical in its desire to control human thought. 'Let's haul MacGowan before the Inquisition and help him re-write his words to our satisfaction.'

Irish media needs to grow up -
@eoghanmcdermo
expressed his (totally right) opinion about the slur in Fairytale Of New York & suddenly the headlines are “DJ calls for this to be banned.” He didn’t. Pushing everything to extremes just for clickbait results in shouting matches.
It possibly says something for the contemporary state of gaelic football that I've just switched over to the Ashes for an update, only to be struck by the realisation that Test match cricket is no slower than Derry-Cork, who r supposed to be playing a top class championship game
Calling all gourmands, gastronomes and other sundry gluttons: made a pit stop in Luigis of Longford this a'noon & was served the best chips I've tasted in decades. They were historically good. Surely the best thing to come out of Longford since Larry Cunningham.
