Five years ago today my husband Jeremy Heywood passed away. We still miss him hugely as a family and I know his colleagues in the Civil Service do too. I hope he would be pleased by the work
@HeywoodFndation
is doing to continue his passion for public sector innovation.
@Faith_Salie
My Gen X story. One morning when I was 7, my parents loaded me on a boat, and set sail around the world. It was a decade before I finally escaped. Along the way we were shipwrecked, shot guns, met whales etc. And my parents consumed a lot of alcohol.
#Wavewalker
I’m delighted that my new book WAVEWALKER is out now. It tells the story of the decade I spent on a boat as a child - and how I escaped.
The extracts were featured in the Guardian and the book has been reviewed by the Mail, TLS and ST. I hope people enjoy it!
Thank you to
@HadleyFreeman
for an incredibly insightful review of my book Wavewalker, in
@ST_Culture
yesterday. It’s been quite a journey to tell my story, literally & figuratively. Your review was beautifully written - I really appreciate it.
Wonderful to see so many friends tonight at the official launch of “Wavewalker”. Thank you to Ed Balls who was fantastic (as always) and Arabella Pike and the rest of the team at Harper Collins!
@edballs
@ArabellaPike
It looks like someone (possibly my father) is creating multiple new accounts on Goodreads to give my book one star reviews. Please review the book if you get a chance. We should NEVER give in to bullies.
@goodreads
My father and brother gave an interview today to
@MailOnline
. I won’t go through all the points - recollections may indeed differ - but one deserves pause as it is painful in many ways.
Thank you
@lib_thinks
in
@thetimes
today for her very thoughtful piece about how my book Wavewalker made her think about the limit to which a child should be trapped in someone else’s dream.

Wonderful to be at the Tunbridge Wells Literary Festival,
@theamelia_tw
today, talking to
@BBC_CReidy
about my new book Wavewalker, and later to
@MsMelanieSykes
about her book Illuminated.
Exciting to see my interview about my new book ‘Wavewalker’ () with
@Daily_Express
out today.
“When you take kids on extreme adventures, you are outside of society. There is nobody watching out for them”
I am still grateful to
@NSPCC
and
@ISPCCChildline
.
Mr Ray (one of the heroes in my new book ‘Wavewalker’) is thrilled that he has been asked to talk about it to the WI. He’s hoping for lots of cake and interesting questions!
@WomensInstitute
Here he is with Wavewalker’s compass:
Almost 5 years after Jeremy passed away and I’m still finding it hard even to open a Monzo account because of the UK’s PEP (politically exposed person)’s scheme … this is crazy.

@JuLlewellyn
- I think it is very important to tell these stories and hopefully encourage a conversation about the rights of children. No child should have to spend a decade of their childhood without access to medical care, schooling or friends
Hi all. I am looking forward to being at the Tunbridge Wells Literary Festival,
@theamelia_tw
Sunday 14th May where I will be talking about my book ‘Wavewalker’ and interviewing
@MsMelanieSykes
about her new book ‘Illuminated’
I was delighted to support the wonderful work done by Their World and Sarah Brown at the launch of my new book Wavewalker last week: all of the royalties from the launch event are going to Their World
@SarahBrownUK
@theirworld
This is my mother’s diary entry after our shipwreck:
“Sue still crying…found her head disfigured by huge swelling on temple, top of head, side of face - she looked deformed…was in tremendous pain…frightened in case she has broken her skull”
This is “getting off lightly”?
It was fantastic to catch up with Matt Brittin and the rest of the team at Google UK
@Google
to discuss my book “Wavewalker”. We had a great discussion about the importance of resilience - which is relevant even if you have not been shipwrecked!
My father and brother gave an interview today to
@MailOnline
. I won’t go through all the points - recollections may indeed differ - but one deserves pause as it is painful in many ways.
I’m delighted that through my book Wavewalker I am able to help
@theirworld
and
@SarahBrownUK
and the fantastic work they are doing to help kids get access to education.
It was lovely to launch
#Wavewalker
in Canada last night with the amazing charity 30 birds - and even more moving that so many of the girls that they have evacuated from Afghanistan so they can have an education in Canada were able to join us!
@30Birds_
@HarperCollinsCa

And also in his 2011 book he remembered the pain of those procedures for me.
Maybe my father really now believes his 7 year old daughter "got away lightly" from injuries inflicted by his decision to cross a dangerous ocean with small children. Unfortunately I don't.
Very exciting to get my first copy from
@HarperCollins
of the US and Canadian edition of Wavewalker this morning! It is is out in those geographies in October.

This is SO exciting! Thank you to everyone who encouraged me to keep writing, including my kids, my late husband, many wonderful friends and
@WmCollinsBooks
&
@PFDAgents
. After so many years, I’ve finally been able to share the true story of my childhood.
#Wavewalker
Thank you so much to Bear Grylls for his endorsement of my new book “Wavewalker”.
“What a journey - a hardcore one at times. I’m glad the compass has found its way home” - Bear Grylls
It was indeed a challenging journey!
@BearGrylls
@CarolinePFD
@ArabellaPike
The paperback cover of
#Wavewalker
has just been revealed! I think it’s hugely evocative - a tiny Wavewalker making its way alone through a huge ocean.
This of course is not my recollection. I remember the agony of multiple head operations with no anaesthetic. Interestingly, in his 2011 book “Schooner to the Southern Ocean” my father remembered that I had “a fractured skull and broken nose” (I attach a copy of his page here)
Thank you
@30Birds_
! It was an honour to join to talk about how we can help all girls access an education - they are our future and we owe that to them.

It’s very exciting to see

now being launched in India! The story of our shipwreck “I’m not afraid to die if we are all together” has long been a core text in Indian schools. Now at last I can share my side of that story.

This book. Stunning storytelling. A remarkable story about a girl trapped in her fathers dream & her mothers bitterness. I LOVED this - couldn’t put it down.

Happy reading Paolo! As well as a lot of politics, and the bonus chapter on Greensill, you will also find some hints of the Wavewalker story hidden inside!

“In Wavewalker, the storm-filled story of her decade-long childhood…Suzanne Heywood asks…why did they take me with them?”
@AmandaPCraig
@MailOnline
Thank you! It’s been difficult to write for all the reasons that are now clear. But I’m so happy the story is out there and hopefully it will inspire others to fight their way out of difficult circumstances
I’m delighted that my letter to my younger self has now been published by
@BigIssue
.
“One day, long after you escape [from Wavewalker] you will find the courage to write your story.”

Over breakfast one morning Suzanne Heywood’s father announced that they were swapping their home in England for a new one out at sea.
But what she thought would be a great adventure turned out to be a decade-long nightmare
My father disputes in the article that as a little girl of 7 in our shipwreck I suffered a fractured skull and broken nose. He adds “she was fine - she got away quite lightly”
It was lovely to meet up with
@drmatthewgreen
this morning to discuss the world of publishing! Many congratulations on his wonderful book

by
@MeghanGurdon
. Thank you.
“Suzanne … tells the story of her extraordinary childhood in “Wavewalker,” a coming-of-age memoir that draws apt comparisons with Tara Westover’s “Educated”
I’m very excited about the launch of
#Wavewalker
tonight in Canada with the incredible charity
@30Birds_
which is trying to ensure that girls from Afghanistan get proper access to education!
@WhatIThinkIs241
Thank you so much. I will do that. As you will know from the story, I grew up in a world where truth was often hard to pin down - which is why I kept such extensive diaries, and was very careful in documenting all of the facts before writing the book.
Thank you so much
@JunieJuneB
. I’m so sorry you had a similar experience but so glad we have both broken free. I want to be a survivor of my childhood, not a victim and I hope you can feel the same way.
@SuzanneHeywood
I’m reading your book and almost finished. I’ve been through a very similar trauma in my family but like you, have broken free. Your book is an inspiration. Thank you for writing it. ❤️
Thank you
@RamblinRoisin
and
@independentIE
for your interview about
#Wavewalker
today.
“It’s a rip-roaring story, but there’s a bigger message here: what are the rights of a child versus the rights of a parent?”

Hi all. I am looking forward to being at the Tunbridge Wells Literary Festival,

Sunday 14th May at One Warwick Park. At 11 am I will be talking to
@BBC_CReidy
about my new book Wavewalker, andhow I escaped from a decade at sea. Tickets here:
It felt appropriate to face this wave today - this one inspired by Hokusai. After all I was once almost killed by a wave - that time in the middle of the Southern Indian Ocean.

#Wavewalker
has made it to Yachting Year 2024. Thank you for a lovely review.

“As well as being an adventure-filled account of a South Pacific sailing trip …Wavewalker is a strong and heart-felt appeal for the rights of children”
A friend sent me this picture today, showing the right way to have small, fun adventures, which don’t involve the risk or isolation of my childhood. I would love to see other, similar photos!

Thanks you
@irisstylosa
. Looking back I am not entirely sure how I survived. And you’re right, I don’t feel bitter at all - in fact I feel thrilled because at last I’m able to tell this story, and hopefully it will encourage a real debate about the rights of children.
@LauraNMeyer
@SuzanneHeywood
@bbcworldservice
Absolutely extraordinary interview! How you survived and triumphed is completely amazing?
You spoke so honestly, but without bitterness?
I must read your book now
Congratulations
@TristramHuntVA
on a fascinating programme about Wedgwood. Before we left England on Wavewalker in 1976, Wedgwood produced a set of Captain Cook plaques (one shown here). We gave them out as we sailed around the world.
Tonight, tonight. 8pm. My new
@BBCRadio4
programme on Josiah Wedgwood - and how his successors drove the business into bankruptcy. But there is now hope once more in Barlaston
Looking forward to joining
@RachelSJohnson
to do a recording for
@DifficultWomen
this morning. As she points out on her brilliant podcast - we should be proud of when we‘ve had to be “difficult” to get things done.
