My late grandfather to me, aged nine, as I handed him another hand-written magazine stapled together from my dad’s printer paper: “So young lady, how long before we see your name on the front of the Yorkshire Post?”
18 years, Gramps.
Mate, it’s not often I get defensive about my hometown, but f*** off you racist nobody. I bet your hometown didn’t produce a Star Trek legend, a Prime Minister and a train station cat with 100,000 Facebook followers
breaking this lunchtime: four neo-Nazi “diehards” - including two from West Yorkshire - convicted of being members of the banned terrorist group National Action have been jailed. more soon
Peter Sutcliffe's victims weren't just the 13 women he's known to have killed and the 7 he's known to have attacked; they were also the thousands of women in Yorkshire who lived in fear of going out and living their lives everyday for 5 years.
Let us never forget what he stole.
I got into work this morning to be greeted by an email telling me I would “soon be paying the ultimate price” for my live coverage of a far right protest in Leeds yesterday.
So on the off chance the sender is reading this, here is is again for you all:
This is Jordan Parlour. He may think he looks hard in this picture, but he's just been jailed for 20 months for calling for people to "smash the f***" out a hotel in Leeds housing refugees.
Parlour, 28, blew a raspberry at the judge as he was taken down
Farage has 'refused' to get off his bus in Wakefield today after this morning's milkshake incident in Newcastle.
He told reporters he was staying on board as "I would be mobbed within 30 seconds".
I've seen more people uncomfortable about Joe Lycett shredding his own money than about Beckham taking £10m from the Qataris.
ask yourselves if you'd be as angry about him spending £10k on another watch or a car?
LGBTQ+ people's lives have mattered so little for too long.
Looks like UKIP European election candidate Carl Benjamin was the latest to get the milkshake treatment during a visit to Salisbury today

just walked past that cat café in Leeds city centre which is still closed and all the cats are sprawled everywhere on all the sofas, tables and counters having an absolute trip, pretending all the humans are dead. this is one post-apocalyptic scene I can wholeheartedly endorse.
lots of focus in this case on Cutter being a "former Miss Hitler beauty pageant contestant", like it's something to snigger about
let's not forget what they all are primarily - convicted neo-Nazis who could have committed unthinkable acts
It’s interesting how the people who demand their right to freedom of speech in these protests are the same people who send threatening, aggressive and expletive emails to journalists because they don’t like the fact the free press have covered them.
It’s almost as if it’s nothing to do with freedom of speech, but more about a minority’s deep-seated anger that the majority do not share their narrow-minded views 🤔
Last time I checked, there was nothing in Article 10 of the European Convention of Human Rights (Freedom of Expression) that said “look if you’re really jolly angry, it’s okay to hoist white power flags, intimidate members of the public and assault police officers”.
Breaking this afternoon – Justice Sec Robert Buckland has admitted budget cuts are a factor in the low prosecution rates for rape (currently ~2%~ of cases resulting in a charge)
-First backbencher in history to get a budget amended in campaign to abolish Tampon Tax
-Got WHSmiths to cut exploitative prices in their hospital shops
-Secured U-turn on cuts to Dewsbury Hospital beds
-First person to say the word ‘vagina’ in House of Commons
Paula, we Stan 👏🏻
I was privileged to be elected as the MP for Dewsbury in 2015, alas 2019 was not meant to be. The only comment I want to make today is to pay tribute to my phenomenal staff team, who ALWAYS went the extra mile in supporting constituents, particularly the most vulnerable
Dear Westminster,
You walk over our carpets, wear suits made from our cloth, drink our water, listen to our music and eat the food we grow on our farms with cutlery made from our steel.
So when are you going to start investing back in us?

To me, Wagner will always be so much more than a manager. He brought a sense of community to Huddersfield that no other head coach has done - even for small clubs. Would you ever see Mourinho, Guardiola or, dare I say it, Bielsa, turning up to a school to serve toast to kids?
just been ID’d by a lad in Tesco with a barely broken voice who, when checking my driving licence, said: “cool we have the same birthday, well not the same year - I was born in 2002”
so yeah at least I have my Shiraz to go home and cry into
If you ever wondered what it would look like if Jodie Whittaker explained Huddersfield place names to Lady Gaga, Ryan Gosling and Bradley Cooper, then do I have a clip for you...

chaos let's remember one thing: The true bravery of girls in Huddersfield/other towns who have been speaking out against the men who ruined their childhoods. They are the true heroes in this, not some uninformed manchild desperate to divide communities.

ok, but no one is talking about the number of older generation journalists who haven’t learned how to write an SEO headline, identify trending topics or even upload their own stories to a website
Still got it…
A new report suggests that fewer than 1 in 5 new journalists pass 100wpm shorthand.
So I spoke to my old shorthand teacher Sylvia - who did a test on air ✍️
I think it’s time to change the language on ‘mental health’.
Let’s start using the phrase ‘mental strength’, and teach our kids the power of resilience. 👊
EXC: rapists and sexual offenders in Yorkshire have been let go with formal police warnings, it can be revealed
one charity said it was "hard to imagine any scenario where a police caution is an appropriate outcome for a sexual offence"
I worked over by 3 hours last night to ensure this was the best it could be, and that it didn’t go to print with misspellings of names or wrongly-placed pictures. Hopefully, I did it justice. But it’s not about me, it’s about the people and families affected by this awful virus.
I don't know who needs to hear this this morning, but Northern Rail just sent out an exciting press release about a load of brand spanking new trains for Yorkshire...with a picture of a train that says 'not in service'. Classic Northern.

Someone sent me a blank email this morning with just several pictures of different tractors attached. No subject, no words, no context whatsoever.
Is this my life on the Yorkshire Post now? Should I expect more of these? I'm very confused

obviously this is nothing to do with Leeds being one of the country's biggest economies and everything to do with keeping everybody safe
I’ve barely managed to process this, but I’m dancing on cloud nine this weekend after finding out yesterday I’ve been shortlisted for a British Journalism Award. It’s following my work to highlight the dismal prosecution rates for rape earlier this year with

What is our legal entitlement to a National Bank Holiday so the entire country can just go home and catch up on every movement of this insane Colleen Rooney v Rebecca Vardy story, please?
for those confused about how a group can be "banned": the Home Office proscribes terror organisations making it illegal to be a member/be in possession of their material. Britain was the first country to proscribe a right-wing extremist group back in 2016.

journo friends, you may see obituaries being shared by The S*n for former "legendary" chief reporter John Kay who's passed away.

earlier this week, we found out Humberside Police were investigating a number of recent rapes in Hull, but asked us not to draw attention to this so as not to ‘scare people’. the force also issued a message for women to ‘stay safe’, before this was retracted.
I never understand in these daily briefings why journalists sometimes ask 3 or 4 questions each...politicians are inevitably going to only answer the aspects of it that suit them and ignore the difficult questions. just ask one really good question they can’t back out of. no?
s/o to Twitter for putting two of my tweets about the neo-Nazis being jailed on the UK News page: my notifications right now are just loads of white supremacists...

In one of my more memorable phone conversations at work yesterday, a farmer I was talking to for a story broke off mid-sentence to shout “WILL YOU LOT SHUT IT”, before continuing, “sorry love that were me cows, now what was I saying?”
God I love Leeds.
I can't for the life of me understand why people are more incensed about civilians pulling down statues of dead racists than racists killing civilians.
Grooming and sexual abuse has been happening in Huddersfield. And it’s deplorable. You know what else happens in Huddersfield, and in every other British town? Thousands of people doing wonderful things. Like helping the homeless and devoting their time to younger generations.
Mate, it’s not often I get defensive about my hometown, but f*** off you racist nobody. I bet your hometown didn’t produce a Star Trek legend, a Prime Minister and a train station cat with 100,000 Facebook followers
for those wondering why the Tory MP arrested over rape allegations hasn't been named, an explainer:
- in the UK, press do not name someone implicated in criminal proceedings unless they've been charged, the reasons being that that person could technically later sue for libel (1)
Stag do’s in the station on a Friday be like “Blackpool ain’t ready for us!”
Oh really, what’s going to happen? You’ll walk around in Peaky Blinders outfits offering to buy drinks for women who aren’t interested, before passing out in the B&B toilet.
Blackpool is ready, lads.
Someone (a man) commented on my story about free period products in schools, saying “what about boys I don’t them getting any free stuff”, and quite honestly this woman’s reply wins the internet
I simply cannot get over the calamitous misunderstanding over this. these are not ‘sex work sessions’, it’s support for the increasing number of students turning to sex work. how dare a university offer the best support it can to students paying them 9k a year?
Alarming that Durham University is continuing with its sex work sessions. Normalising sex work in this way is harmful. The Home Affairs Select Committee, of which I am a member, will be looking at this.

Seen in a bargain shop recently - “no crying” and “no feelings discussed”. Possibly the worst things I’ve seen. At least “cave” is an accurate summary.
when Billie Eilish sang ‘you made me hate this city’ she was talking about Leeds’ unfit-for-purpose public transport network where buses just magically never turn up
my dad works for the company that provided the heating for the NHS Nightingale. they’re the only ones who sell pipes with anti-viral coating. but they didn’t have enough...so for the first time in history they kept the factory open all night to make it. i 💕 this wartime spirit.
