It's confirmed that yesterday's White-tailed Eagle over Worcester Park is not from the Isle of Wight project. Thus, it's likely a continental wanderer and the first wild WTE in Surrey since 1906.
@IsaiahVRowe
's account of this epic record can be read here:
How about this for an unusual sighting? A Kingfisher photographed by Rob Douglas in Godalming. It apparently came in through the patio doors, flew around for a bit then settled for a short while before flying back out and resting in an Oak tree for ten minutes!
Surrey's second Rustic Bunting; the below photograph taken this morning by
@djbrassington65
. For any visitors, the boardwalks are currently out of use and filming is taking place near The Moat. Also, the buntings are finding plenty to eat, so no need for seed to be put down ...
Appreciate this is a rough shot, but I had only my phone, what bird is this ? It has a yellow beak and looks like a small magpie, but different markings ? Have never seen a bird like this

@SurreyWT
It looks like a few Black Redstarts have arrived on the south-east coast today on the back of gentle east winds from the near Continent. A species to look out for locally in the coming days should birds filter inland (🗺️ via

Turtle Doves are hanging on by the skin of their teeth in Surrey. If you chance upon one, please act responsibly in regard to sharing news – this species needs all the help it can get. Their welfare is infinitely more important than a tick, kudos or some social media likes 🕊️
On this day in 2013, Surrey's first (and to date only) Pallid Harrier – a male – was briefly at Papercourt Water Meadows. Found and photographed by Mark Hill.
What a weekend at
@TicesMeadow
; Surrey's 17th Montagu's Harrier since 1900 (a stonking male to boot), Grey Plover, Goldeneye & more ...
One of Surrey's most important birding sites – please consider signing this petition to save it if you haven't already:
It has been an excellent start to the Lesser Spotted Woodpecker season in Surrey, with territorial birds logged at a minimum of eight sites so far. Now is the perfect time to search for this elusive and declining species in a woodland near you

On this day in 1999, the Surrey record count of 370 Kittiwakes flew west over
@BeddingtonFarm
. Three waves of northerly storms that month forced birds into the Thames and across land towards the Severn – on 7th, 337 flew over QE2 Reservoir and on 22nd, 60 flew over Unstead SF.
Gripping photos by Trevor Walker of the Horley Great Grey Shrike, which was hunting along hedges & corn fields at Littlelake Farm. An excellent find in Surrey away from the heaths.
Full sightings from 28 October, including 2 new Black Redstarts, are here:
Incredible scenes! A Rustic and now 2 Little Buntings together on a Surrey common. There must be a few more Sibes lurking at inland sites this winter ...
Reminder that Thursley is entering tier 4 on Boxing Day, so mass appreciation of the bunting extravaganza will have to wait.
Thought we were hallucinating at Thursley Common this evening. The Little Bunting has found a friend! Both Little Buntings and the Rustic Bunting on the ground together just before dusk. Unparalleled inland record?!

Since late May there's been a considerable influx of Crossbills into the vice-county, with at least 51 sites recording the species. The below map shows they can turn up anywhere, but there's a preference for the hills of the North Downs and Greensand Ridge, as well as the heaths.
Changes have been made to the list of species that are considered description level rarities in the vice-county, with Great Egret removed and Wood Warbler added. More information here:
Although declining, Spotted Flycatcher is still relatively easy to catch up with in Surrey. We've put together a guide to the best sites at which to see them – take a look here: . Photos courtesy

There seems to be a good passage of Whinchat in the county at the moment, with birds noted at Ash Ranges, Chobham Common, Priest Hill, Papercourt Water Meadows and Shackleford in recent days.
What was probably the same Spoonbill toured 3 vice-county sites today: south-west over

briefly from c.16:50. It remains a tricky species to catch up with in Surrey!
Merlin is a rarity in Surrey these days, averaging 2 or 3 a year. This autumn has been particularly good for the falcon, though, with no fewer than 7 records from the sites on the map below. As a description species, photos and notes for any Merlin sightings are appreciated!
The latest decisions from the SBC Records Committee are on the website (). Notable records include two Bee-eaters, Red-footed Falcon, Black Kite, six Hoopoes, Richard’s Pipit, Rosy Starling, Golden Oriole and the first wild White-tailed Eagle since 1906.
The latest decisions from the SBC Records Committee are on the website (). Highlights include the vice-county’s second Short-toed Lark, the seventh record of Black-winged Stilt, two Little Buntings, Ring-necked Duck, Lapland Bunting, Hoopoe and Arctic Skua.
Blast from the past. Thirty years ago today
@Jeremy_Gates67
found Surrey’s first & still only Marsh Sandpiper at Old Woking SF. It remained until the 7th & was seen by many. Not sure who took these shots.
On this day in 2014, a second-year male Two-barred Crossbill was found at Sheephatch Lane, Tilford, by

18 Sabine's Gulls at 10 sites, 5 Grey Phalaropes at 4 sites, a Pomarine Skua at Frensham Great Pond, 37 Little Gulls, 3 Kittiwakes and an Arctic Skua at Croham Hurst Golf Club ... The stuff of Surrey birding legend (and of inland birders' dreams!).
The vice-county averages just about one White-fronted Goose record a year these days. Today, no fewer than four sites logged the species, with this impressive flock of 18 near Betchworth! Part of a marked influx into South-East England since yesterday.
We're now looking for good quality photographs for the 2018 Surrey Bird Report, which will feature more images than ever! If you have any for consideration please direct message us/

On this day in 2003, Surrey's only record of Subalpine Warbler occurred when a male was found at Lonsdale Road Reservoir. At dusk it flew to roost in shrubbery on the other side of Lonsdale Road and was not seen again. Photo courtesy of Johnny Allan.
A bit of Jack Snipe action in Surrey over the last two days. The below bird was rather curiously in a stubble field by the M23 at Holmethorpe SP yesterday, while today no fewer than 16 (plus 117 Common Snipe) were at

For those enjoying the Shackleford Short-toed Lark today, please continue to park in the village but do so sensibly. There are a couple of cars blocking entrances to houses on Chalk Lane – homeowners OK for now but patience will wear thin! Bird still present early afternoon.
No sign of the Rosy Starling near Horley today. It showed yesterday afternoon for a tiny handful of birders fortunate enough to be granted access to the private land it was on. Only the 14th for Surrey, but every chance another will turn up during this current influx.
The drake Ferruginous Duck was still at Papercourt GPs at dusk among the mixed Aythya flock. Only the 7th county bird since 1990 and first since 2015.
As it happens, today's finder
@Jeremy_Gates67
discovered one at the same site on 2 February 2002.

Fittingly, today is historically a good one for ducks in Surrey – on this day in 2008, Eric Soden found Surrey's fifth Green-winged Teal at Enton Ponds, while on this day in 1981, Rupert Hastings found a drake Blue-winged Teal at Barn Elms Reservoirs (now London Wetland Centre).
On this day in 1994, Surrey's only Marsh Sandpiper was found at Old Woking Sewage Farm by

Also on this day, in 2012,

at Leith Hill is a Surrey record 13,302, mostly E and S ahead of rain. 07.45-09.45 hit a record 10,000+ when I left then Wes then got the rest by 11. Also 73 Crossbill. Now counting remaining great sightings of other sp.
On this day in 2006, Surrey's only Crag Martin flew over

, one of the most important wetland sites in the county & an integral part of the local community. It faces an uncertain future & is up for sale, so please consider signing this petition:
The Thursley fire has spread east with a new blaze on the south side of Ockley Common. Little hope for Surrey's last breeding pair of Curlews. It's seemingly not yet at 2006 levels, but the continued heat and strong winds don't bode well for extinguishing the fire today.
Sadly the Thursley Common fire now has a secondary flare up this morning, the fire crews have been absolutely amazing and our deepest thanks for their continuous effort to put the fire out. My thoughts go with all the wildlife that will have sadly perished

A very Happy Christmas to all our members, followers and all Surrey Birders and best wishes for a great birding year in 2018.

A nice selection of species at Ashtead Common/Rushett Farm at the moment, with Cuckoo, Lesser Spotted Woodpecker and Woodcock among other recent sightings.
I had a short explore around this amazing farmland and woodland area early this morning with no one else around and pleased to see a few Yellowhammers, 2 RL Partridges, Skylarks, Whitethroats and all the usual spring arrivals plus a few Lapwings!
A Bittern at
@WWTLondon
yesterday became the earliest ever recorded in Surrey, beating the previous record by a day (set in 1959). There is only one August sighting on record as well.
A species that will perhaps breed in the vice-county one day ...
Worth checking your local waterbodies tomorrow for any seabirds that were blown inland today. This Arctic Skua was found on a tiny private reservoir near Milford in autumn 2013 (📷

Highlights included the second vice-county records of Lesser Yellowlegs and Penduline Tit, the first Icterine Warbler for 35 years, Purple Heron and Hoopoe.
Surrey's eighth Little Bunting still at Thursley Common but rather elusive and showing intermittently. Decent numbers of Crossbills and Lesser Redpolls present too, as well as the Yellowhammer (modern-day Thursley mega!).
Weds 15 Jan: 2 Tree Sparrows at Beddington Farmlands, seen this pm from most northerly hide on public footpath on seed-feeder behind pit (with telescope).
#londonbirds
(Kudos to whoever got the feeders put in, nice to see these birds from the public footpath!)
Surrey's superb autumn continuing this morning: both Rustic and Little Buntings still at Thursley Common, generally quite elusive out on Ockley Common but sometimes perching together!
No further sign of the Thursley Red-foot by 19:45. It was over Pudmore for quite a while before news went out. Flew east with a couple of Hobbies at c.16:30. Should be some pictures emerging soon.
