🚨New Pub🚨
Our paper (w/Sagarika and
@ophiryotam
) on the growing politicization of news apps reviews on Google Play, an ostensibly non-political space based on their terms of service, is now live in New Media & Society! (Repost with Updated link)
I am on the job market this year. It is SO STRESSFUL, even more than I imagined. Sometimes I feel confident—I have publications in good journals, a lot of teaching experience, and a passion for research—but this feeling disappears so quickly, replaced by extreme anxiety….
Last year, my ICA paper got rejected. I felt very frustrated and skeptical about my academic life. This year, some accepted, some still were rejected. I feel very peaceful. My advisor
@ophiryotam
told me,rejection is part of the game. Yes, it is. And it means nothing.

I read the blog written by
@HeesooJang2
many times. It is so encouraging and inspiring. I really appreciate you share your feelings, experience, and your materials to whom on the job market. They are very helpful.
Thrilled to announce that our paper w/

Day2
Very glad to present our TWO works with my advisor
@ophiryotam
in DC.
Nice to meet many scholars, friends and thanks for all the comments!
I didn’t expect this post to get so much attention! Just to clarify, I’m not pessimistic about academic jobs. On the contrary, I’m hopeful and confident that I’ll find a position I love. This post was more about the natural self-doubt anyone faces in the job market.

Congratulations to all our award winners! There is so much amazing research being done in Information Technology and Politics, and this was the best of the best this year! Tags in the thread.
Every time I feel my writing is awful and want to give up, I think of what
@yinizhang2011
told me that “a good paper is always a done paper”. Then I go back and continue my awful writing. Finish first, polish second.
I may be late to share my presentation about the efficacy of AI fact-checking in shielding the political attacks on social media on news trust w/

at

Finished all my presentations in

! You are the best colleagues in the world! And thanks to
@filippotrevisan
to organize the iposter session, this is one of the most informative and organized poster presentation!
When I feel anxious about one study and the success of its publication, I comfort myself I have a whole life in academia, one year or two is the whole story for a student, but relatively short for a researcher. Quality is always important than quantity. Stay positive.

Life is tough… I am not sure whether I am lucky (have a good idea) or not (somebody publishes it already) as a junior researcher… similar situation happens twice in three months. I need to cry, for real.

🚨New Book Chapter Out🚨
What are the effects of journalists’ coverage on health and science? Do they always succeed in communicating the facts to the public amid an age of public distrust in news media?
Do computer science conferences support communication research effectively? Computer scientists may question the compatibility of the disciplines' paradigms and the novelty and contribution of our studies. Curious to hear what the communication community thinks about this.
📰 Another day, another resource (though this one is more a draft): a list of
#polcomm
and computational social science conferences (e.g., comm, journal, po, polisci, css, hci). Feel free to share with colleagues/students/classes.
The ICA decisions and comments are available in ScholarOne(). You can see the decisions through “View submission”. 3 papers get accepted this year with
@ophiryotam
and my friends! Still waiting the decision for one coauthored article. See you in Toronto!
Exam day in my class. I put a bonus question in the exam asking my students to write down the professor's name for this class. I hope everyone can earn the points, though I have no confidence ┓( ´∀` )┏
Writing one of my papers at night goes much more smoothly than writing it during the day. Feel excited and satisfied after writing 500 words in half an hour.
In a very interesting talk,
@Summer912_
shows how news app reviews on Google Play - which are supposed to focus on technical and UX aspects - are increasingly becoming politicized, e.g. focusing on news media‘s trustworthiness or perceived bias.
#ICA23
I asked my students do they think mainstream media in the U.S is trustworthy, everyone said NO stoutly. They told me the media used to be trustworthy, but now they take a political side. Very interesting. At least, they used to believe in news media😂
I shared the same feelings with
@ophiryotam
, our department
@CommDepUB
is INDEED fantastic! We have the most supportive and intelligent faculties and colleagues. I am so lucky to be part of the family. Besides, please check out this interesting podcast!
I was interviewed by Dr. Tim Jordan in "Grass-Roots Health" podcast. We talked about misinformation, conspiracies, and extremism, and how they interfere with science communication and public health. The podcast is available on all the expected platforms:
Today, Qualtrics plays a trick on me. I closed my survey yesterday and tried to download the responses just an hour ago, but all my data was weirdly missing.... I felt hopeless and depressed, and I suddenly can't hear, see,and feel nothing.. until I called their support team

I met same situation. My mom is a Chinese visitor in the States. I took her to CVS and got the booster the other day, the staff just ignored us and kept telling us to schedule online, even though they were all free at that time.

This is a lesson for me, as a graduate student, and an early researcher, that even though data is missing, we still need to be alive. Calm down and take a deep breath, don't "kill" yourself. There will always be a solution, only if you are still alive.....

Comm folks, I have one paper listed as “High density paper session”, I am very confused about the format of the “High density” of

. Do we need to prepare any visual aids for the session (poster or slides)?
Agent-based model has so much potential for communication research. I am glad I am exposed to this method from my SNA class. The special issue of CMM about ABM should be a great starting point for anyone interested in this method.
