Sad news reached me today that long-time Chase County track coach Al Zuege has passed away.
In 1962, he was a Haigler Eagle winning the Class D 880 at Memorial Stadium. What a great pic! Godspeed, Coach Zuege.

Every time I see a modern basketball team climbing off the bus in their fancy, matching travel gear/airport sweats/team gear from Under Armor/Nike/whatever, I think of my teammates and I walking into a gym in letter jackets and Levis, and I think, advantage 1980s!

Wahoo went 26-0 to repeat as Class B state champs in 1989. It was the second for four straight titles and the first unbeaten season in Class B since Hartington Cedar Catholic went 25-0 in 1980.

So this is great. Fort Calhoun is making their first trip to Boys State hoops since 1923 so this year’s team decided to pay homage to them by recreating their championship photo. Hope they make a run.

Wish I had a clean print of this picture. Legend v Legend. That's Aurora's Tom Kropp and Fairbury's Bob Siegel meeting at the rim in the 1971 Class B semis. Siegel scored 23, Kropp 45; but the Jeffs won 81-80 and went on to take the title with another one-point win over Cozad.

THIS. THIS is perfect. It’s their old gym, so pre-1984, but it may go back to 60s. Everything about this is perfect. Numbers taped on the school uniforms. The Sisters of the Order of the Sacred Heart cheering the bucket. And, they have pennants!!! (I may retire on this tweet.)

Pershing hosted more than basketball and Elvis. There was indoor football and roller derby. The Goo Goo Dolls played the last concert there in 2014. Heck, I saw Beauty and the Beast ON ICE there in the 90s. (Don't ask.)
