Pub 2957, Vine, Brierley Hill. Wow I'm not sure I've been to many better pubs in my life, not joking! Bloke knew we weren't local cos we chose Mild! And Dad got us to some canal lock action.
Revisit. Rutland Arms. Sheffield. My favourite pub in the UK. I’ll tell you why. Old school pub atmosphere. But a young clientele and a quirky fun atmosphere. If pubs are to survive beyond my generation , this is the blueprint, and hopefully the future!
#NotDrunkHonest
Pub 2584, Ypres Castle, Rye. Wow what a classic up these leafy gravity defying stairs. A tiny dog licked me, a L**ds fan booed, and this lovely cardboard wielding South Shields bloke called Jeff did the honours. Brilliant pub. Truly. Staying for another, hic!
Pub 2735, Cockpit, Blackfriars. Best so far. We even have a rare Central London carpet - good in parts 7.5/10. Geordie lass upsets all by saying she likes Mr Brightside. Aimed for lowest percentage beer, saw the 4 on, ended up picking the strongest oops. I could live here.
Revisit! Alexandra, Derby. Been giving Brunswick a lot of love recently, so i wanted to remind myself how special this is. The Dark Hemptress is a killer , only customer in back room so far. One of my all time favourite pubs 🥰
Pub 2880, Rugglestone Inn, Widecombe in the Moor. One of the best pub experiences ever, and I've seen a lot. Even the loos felt grade II listed. The West Sussex porter from barrel stunning. Staff had big hearts. Pub heaven. Escrick randomness. Get yersen down here!
Pub 2773, Cotton Tree,Bollington. Wow I loved this. Sausage roll n Bass with 20p change from a fiver. Rockabilly live thrumming from all corners. Gorgeous pub.
Pub 2720, Queen’s Head, Hinckley. I’ve been to some good pubs in my life but wow this is up there. Told barmaid tmw is National Bass day. Then ordered ….. Abbeydale Moonshine! She seemed tickled. But we had zero clickage afterwards. Pub perfection!
Olde Black Boy, Hull. Dad sat in this very upstairs room on his 18th birthday (1965) and wore a grass skirt! Luckily more restrained today. Still a good pub 🙌🏻
Pub 2623, Black Lion, Kilburn. A feast for the eyes, ornate doesn’t do it justice! Amazing. Fake Liam Rosenior can’t work out CAMRA discount, my Glasshouse drinks like quality soup. Big fan.
GBG arrived 🥳. Just when I was losing hope for today. Scared the poor Yodel lady by running down my steps to meet her halfway. Let the cross ticking commence. See you on 26/9/24.
#BetterThanChristmasDay
Good morning all. End of my BRAPA Northumbrian special, great county.
85% of the county completed ☑️ 🥳
Only six pubs eluded me, but hope to be back for all before September.
Thanks for all the likes & comments, helps keep me going on those wet sheepy rural lanes 🐑 ☔️
Pub 2588, Unicorn, Wollaston. Mild or bitter? Daddy B says he’s not been asked that since 67/68 season! My cob is eating superbly. Bitter gets better each drop. Blokes line the walls. Del Boy loves it too. Perfect pub.
Pub 2768, Stanley Arms, Patricroft. Oooh yes, my kinda pub. Green tiling, ancient loos, sat in ‘Pisshead Corner’ in the Vault next to a Bobby George photo listening to locals talk about dabbers. Asked if I was doing mild trail. Said no but Ozan Toucan gets a little ticket.
Revisit. Little Plough, Donny. Still top 100 best pub ever potential. Barnsley bitter still amazing. Side room didn’t know existed. Train strikes can be fun.
Pub 2574, Crown Hotel, Middlesmoor. High on a hill, this old shooting lodge is a multi roomed cracker which smells like French library books. Highlight is when Dad asks if they have any non alcohol/low alcohol beers. ‘Well the Black Sheep is only 3.8%’ she says.
#pubwoman
Pub 2320, Fat Cat, Norwich. Oh yes, exactly the pub I’d hoped. Puts me in mind of those classic early 2000’s away day pubs that first got me into ale & pubbing. Plenty busy too, men on mobility scooters, chatting Fred Dibnah & Fatface.
Pub 2568, Red Lion, Snargate. Crikey, what a classic! Too much bygone era-ness to absorb. A solitary farmer is playing Solitaire, possibly a paid actor for the benefit of pub tourists like me. The Goachers Mild (and Fine Light) are drinking superbly. Friendly place too 🥰
Pub 2573, Queens Arms, Litton. It doesn’t get much more rural than this. A heroic Daddy BRAPA effort. The Twild Barnaby has to hold door open so mummy can bring her Prosecco through, but this is a friendly stone-clad Dales superstar for the most part. Local Lamb beer decent!
Pub 2734, Viaduct Tavern, Smithfield. Oh yes I love it. Ceiling 10/10 , haunted prison loos and exciting arty bits. Meant to ask for a Pride or Oliver's Island but "ESB" spewed out like involuntary beery tourettes. Probably best I didn't end up on the Bish Finger earlier!
Pub 2771, Castle, Macclesfield. Beautiful pub. Friendly too. Turn immediately right if feeling thin & wanting ale. Went to loo and even the wide bit is characterful. Bad Kitty not as amazing as I remember but tastes more a recipe thing than a well kept beer thing!
Pub 2640 , Blue Boar, Leicester. Wow this is a cracker , I tell yer what, pint of Porter, the deepest filled sausage roll ever, and a map of late medieval Leicester what more can you want?! Heaving now, sign of good pub. Daddy B hat wear special.
Pub 2757, Buxton Brewery Cellar, Buxton. Took til 14:12 to open and only cos I asked next door about delay. ‘Technical issues’ they told me 🤔. Fallen Hero tasted like diet Strongbow. Barman sulky even though I helped him with blackboard/entrance. Utter shite effort.
Pub 4/4 tonight, Alexandra Hull. Doesn’t open much, so gotta take advantage of this total gem when it does. Jaipur is drinking drunkenly. I’ll tell you about the other 3 in due course / as evening progresses.
Pub 2600, Rutland, Grimsby. Looked shut since 1970’s but once inside, liveliest bugger going! 20 mobility scooters, the pale Old Mill ale is like a bitter, and men play cards n shout at each other. Could live here!
Pub 2760, Lower Turks Head, Manchester. First time in GBG for this crazy Holts stinker. Two Pinot Grigio ladies let me share a table. Carpet a scuffy 7. Toothless dude shouts at a passing car. Most folk look like they are on trial. Great pub in reality.
Pub 2731, Spread Eagle, Wandsworth. Ooh yes, etched mirrors n snob screens galore. Most etching since I drank a litre of Um Bongo and went mad on etch-a-sketch. Young's Special tastes way stronger than 4.5%. Relatively cheerful for SW Lon, someone smiled for 3 whole secs 🥰
Pub 2736, Fox & Hounds, Sloane Square. Jaw dropping, electric fly swatting stuff. Posh old blokes in suits seem interested. Then it is all Jimmy Edwards (a comedian painted into a picture here), Petula Clark, Cilla & 1930's pubs no one can remember.
Revisit, Crown Posada, Newcastle. The Coffin ⚰️ Beautiful pub, beautiful people, as Jimmy Cliff sang on his debut here. Same seat as first visit with
@FreeborneJW2
and not changed in 24 years, probably more like 224 😂. Motörhead is Chocolate heaven. Pub perfection.
Ten years ago today, I took a bus to the Albion in Ampthill, Beds and BRAPA was born.
Arlesey and Biggleswade swiftly followed, then I spent the night in Bedford.
Join me today at noon for six more ticks in Glamorgan 🎈🍻🎊🎉
#BRAPA
Pub 2790, Bridge Inn, Topsham. This is a pub that somehow bends time n space. Such an 18th century smell. Such cosy poky smallness. Chatted to some absolute lovely’s. I’m rather impressed!
Pub 2515, Alexandra Arms, Kettering. One of those classic alehouses with pumpclips doing a lot, bit like that cute thing in Reading. Quirky landlord, backstreet locals take their cue from him. Second Skittles pub in a row! Taste the Northants rainbow 🌈 Great pub in my eyes.
Post holiday pint. Doric Arch, Euston. Years since I’ve been here. Better than I remember. They’ve cleaned it. ESB 70p cheaper than Parcel Yard.
71% Northants complete, and you could argue with exception of Litchborough, the rest belong in a neighbouring county 😉 Cheers 🍻
Bull, Birmingham. Re-visit and an absolute tonic after a day which has been painful in every way. Thankfully, a proper pub atmosphere, Oakham Citra and bacon fries make everything ok. Bit of ABBA too for the win!
Pub 2524, Albion Brewery Bar. Beautiful old vaulted hall food smelling place of some distinction. I’m purring at the love on offer. Northampton ticked ✔️ Late start tmw , see you then gang!
Pub 2737, Prince of Wales, Clapham. POW! Best Clapham pub I've ever done and I've done too many. Like a funky ghost train. TT Landlord drinks well. Possible Topanga from Boy Meets World does well . Decor is delicious warming bric a brac.
Revisit, Victoria, Durham. Oooh yes see I remember this is v good. Big Lamp bitter, landlord japes, nice curved etched things, could live in here, but you know, West Wales won't tick itself. Toasties.
Pub 2749, Park Tavern, Kingston. Delicious beauty. Dog wants to eat Colin and owner doesn't even care, cruel. John's defibrillator comment helps us get accepted by the locals. Loads of geese n ducks for some insane reason.
Sun Inn, Stockton-on-Tees. Pre-emptive, post-emptive. Lovely banked Bass. Col doesn’t get it. Locals are flabby n toothless n kind. Life of Riley by Lightning Seeds merges into True Blue by Madonna. Good times. Might ‘need’ another cos my train is stuck in Yarm.
Revisit! Craven Arms, Brum. My Parcel Yard of the West Midlands. Utterly love it. The Woolly Bugger was pint of day, carpet n wallpaper a solid 8, today has been very great.
Pub 2519, New Inn, Abthorpe. Success! Great pub, carpet of the week, 4 Hooky beers, pickled eggs, next to the wood burner, taxi ordered , terrified locals, a pet pig in every garden, a textbook BRAP.
Pub 2780, Imperial, Exeter. Another stunning Spoons. What a tree, looks at the Orangery room 😍. Carpet has personality crisis but still an 8.5 easy. Nice ‘only live once / handled glass ‘ barman chat. Only thing let’s it down is bathwater pint. Dudley wants a swim 🤣
Good morning all! Today's pubs are very far away. Not small. Just very far away. See you at 11ish for the first. Colin is shortbread ready. Have a great pub day.
#BRAPA
Pub 2581, Half Moon, Melton Mowbray. What a brilliant pub to end 2023 ticking. Everyone is such a richly drawn character, the Bass is of such quality, and the love is being felt. See you all in 2024, it has been a good pubby ride 😁
Pub 2310, Low Lights Tavern, North Shields. Good grief, how have I not heard about this before? A low lit Bass jewel in the crown. Even the ‘restaurant’ area is pubbier than most pubby pub bits (so to speak). Top photo
@daddybrapa
Pub 2545, Bridge Inn, Kingswinford. I love a Black Country pub and this ticks all my boxes. 8.5/10 carpet and fire and wallpaper, tonnes of well kept ales cos locals hammer it, chunky cobs, challenging accents , curvy benches. Putting the WIN in Kingswinford.
Pub 2292, Tan Hill Inn, Tan Hill. Highest in England, always wanted to pop in here. Daddy B declines cheap coffee cake controversially in this surprisingly pubby effort. Beer was very peculiar and I don’t mean in a good ‘old’ ‘Theakstons’ way.
Pub 2985, Harbour Inn, Garlieston. Yoda ringtone studiously ignored at this classic boozer where the Jarl (I say Yarl, barman reckons Jarl) is top hole. Friendly, sturdy carpet, things are looking up. A while til bus but worse places to linger.
Pub 2811, King's Head, Deane, Bolton. This is brilliant. Friendly old skool, people chat about Frank Carson on Blankety Blank like it is modern. £3.30 for a scintillating Mild. Bank Top n Black Edge, winning combo. Lulu the dog doesn't trust Gandalf. Slivers of carpet 9/10 ✅
Pub 2809, Old Hall Hotel, Hope. Big fan of this proper pub, shiny happy people not holding hands but an 8.5 carpet with bonus hound. Old Peculiar drinking well. Suit of armour. Returned my dropped hat. Winner. Raining hard.
Pub 2758, Goyt Inn, Whaley Bridge. What a cracker! Rural and rustic. Main bar carpet gets a 9, and the Eclipse drinks moodily dark. Staff do a lot of growling, and the Wifi is zero so stick that up your woolly jumper.
Pub 2588, Augustus John, Liverpool. Best student pub ever! That carpet, these benches, this £3.60 5% stout 😋. The two lovely blokes in charge notice Colin, give me 2 pre-emptives and a Liverpool pub poster. That’s service for ya. Pub of the day? 🤭
Good evening, it is raining in South West London but I'm checked in to my Prem Inn and back on a train for the evening session! Three hopefully filthy boozers with 10/10 ale n carpets coming up!
#BRAPA
Bull's Head, Manchester. I don't know why I love it, but I do. Such life, such perfume, such great TTL at £5.55 a pint (good for Manc?). Been coming here since 2012 and I've sat in same seat every time 😚 Like an invisible force stops it being bad!
Parcel Yard, King’s Cross. Evening lads n lasses, it has been fun in Essex, Tottenham Hale is wet, but my palate is dry n wants an ESB to right the wrongs of this world. Up the Tigers, up the strong ale drinkers!
Pub 2956, Rose & Crown, Brierley Hill. This is what you come to the Black country for! Holden's Special and a cheese n onion cob you need to detatch a jaw for. Ooosh. Soundtrack mainly Doors n Nirvana makes me wanna inject myself with Golden Glow.
Good evening, I’ve located the legendary Daddy BRAPA at the Fox Inn, my favouritist of all my York favourite pubs, the White Rat is drinking very well, cricket going well, win win win
George, Hull. Revisit but so good today. Barmaid’s sense of smell means she won’t give me the Rocking Rudolph. But £3.10 for a good TT Landlord, what scenes! Amazing selection of miserable locals dotted about bench seating, the SAFC fans are fitting in amazingly.
Pub 2729, Trafalgar, South Wimbledon. A real survivor looking at the landscape around. Perfectly formed street corner local, deserves better atmosphere from punters & staff who seem surprisingly miserable. Half carpet a striking 8/10. Know it all cyclists manspread. SW19 done!
Pub 2572, Jolly Fisherman, Hastings. Cosy snuggly micro. Beardo bloke sniffs a cork to show his craft credentials. Italian family get overwhelmed by blackboards. And jaunty hat bloke tells me no one here treats him right. Got my tea sorted 😃
Good morning friends of the pubs, it is the first
#BRAPA
Saturday of the new season and we're off to a county I've been neglecting for six years. Bring on the ticks 📚 🍻 🚂. Have a good 'un.
Pub 2606, 9 Anchors, Seaton Carew. What a photogenic delight of a micro. Barman so switched on, Spoons grounding he says means he knows how to keep good cellar, this Samson’s is amazing. Retired Martin knew! Drinks delivery, best get outta the way.
Revisit, Brunswick Derby. What a beauty! You forget don’t you? Double carpeting, double beermating, happiest we’ve been all day after train only ran as far as Derby and ZERO acknowledgement from train idiots. Raining again, and Lds train 9 mins delayed FML 🤦🏻
Pub 2601, George, St Helens. Proper boozer! First time in GBG since 1977 and it still could be here. They have me clocked as a CAMRA straight away. £2.90 for an Old Boston. Best Plum Porter outside of Titanic ever. Hot radiator. Carpet 8. Toothless pool man says hi.
Pub 2832, Halfway House. Ashton under Lyne. Like someone's front room! If someone's front room was full of messy rapscallions with gold teeth and a drinking problem. Love it. On way, long haired fluffy gives me sip of his 'Gonester' - Guinness n Monster!
Pub 2033, Bay Hotel, Robin Hood’s Bay. Actually loved this. Topping up my Lightfoot ale that didn’t even need it. Real fire. Looking out onto the sea at dusk, bench seating, unfussy n the staff & locals effortlessly bouncing off each other (not literally).
Good evening from Peterborough's Parcel Yard, the Brewery Tap, and the Oakham half guest is drinking burningly. But delicious. See you Sat when I'll be in a dodgy bit of London with Daddy B .
Pub 2640, Beer EnGin , Whiston. Merseyside complete 🥳🤩
And you couldn’t wish for a friendlier micro. Leanne top class. Man who loves Bridlington, top hole. Flo the dog who drinks North Riding Oatmeal stout , top banana. So nice to end on a high. Train delays boo Merseyrail.
Pub 2733, Queen’s Vaults, Cardiff. Manages to combine bonkers Welshness and pretty features, like the little red screened booths. Hawaiian shirted pool players managed to get their cue ball under my chair when I’m about a mile away! £2.50 Double Dragon yasss. G’wan Brekkie lad!
Pub 2854, Axminster Inn, Axminster. AS IF this pub of all pubs has no carpet 😆 .... Very nice though, very Dorsety for one so Dev, lots of Palmers and quiet pubmen having a pint, reading paper, coughing up the phlegm of night before. Lovely.
Hi everyone. Bit like Christmas morning innit? Feels great to be back in a pub . The Mount, York. SIX customers inc me, 61 Deep tastes like nectar, new landlady, good clear rules (though one old boy had to be re-routed!) Feels very normal.
Pub 2743, Railway, Cheam. A true beauty in the watery post rushhour sun. Vintage blockbusters and beer that sticks to glass. Jaunty couple orig from Scunthorpe give me the lowdown on all that is Cheam, they like ticking cos they did every Young's pub in 70s.
Pub 2388, Ship Inn, Deal. What a classic, love this place, the Gadds’ is on sterling form, is busy again! Pubs ain’t dead yet☺️Location great, Middle St a bit like Hull old town.
Gooood morning from a sunny central London. 74 pubs to tick. Possibly not all today. Feeling fresh thanks to a Lenny Henry bed so let's get cracking. Have a tolerable Monday.
#BRAPA
🍻
Good morning all from Carrow Road, unlikely pre emptive , nice bottle of Wherry with Daddy BRAPA's first appearance in over a month 🥳. Five pubs coming up later this aft.
#BRAPA
Pub 2896, Beacon Hotel, Sedgley. Daddy B got on the SHRUM as he calls it (Sarah Hughes Ruby Mild). Inside like a stuffy church so out now where blokes playing their weird music.. what a pub! Best so far and that is saying something. Last orders bell sounded 3pm!
#BadgeIn
Col
Pub 2576, Bay Horse, Masham. Wispa the dog tries to eat me, another dog melts in front of fire, and the Semer Water drinks with great conviction at this happy throbhole. Strong pub to end. Can we relax now? Good evening all.
Pub 2736, Gatekeeper, Cardiff. Spoons to end, cos why not? Best achievement of my BRAPA career? Off train at 21:53. Checked in hotel. Tesco snacks for later. 4 ticks (pints) before last orders. Good job I am in a city of pissheads. Beer n carpet 9/10. See you tmw 👊🏻
Pub 2968, Spaniards Inn, Hampstead. A solid start as I can feel the 16th century timbers shivering. Probably cos it was £6.55 a pint of Proper Job. Good drop though and Daddy B & Oscar are here to buy the beers. Posh peppermint tea lady makes weird 'tip' comment.
Pub 2771, King’s Arms, Salford. Sky gone black, rain blobbing , but I like this quirky lounge lizard - like an Antic GONE ROGUE! Good barmaid weather chat. Chris The Orange Giant drinking well. See you all on Saturday in more southern climes.
Cutlers, Rotherham. Revisit! I don’t have a top 10 pubs of all time but this would be in it if I did. It ticks all the BRAPA boxes. Just hope it stays empty til kick off cos I like having the run of the place 🤣 👴🏻 🍻
Pub 2737, Red Lion, Penderyn. One of those village classics where locals & staff are indistinguishable. Fire roaring impressively, Bass is tip top condition, and people tell local stories in a slow, dramatic, mysterious way. ‘Come again’ they say when I leave! We’ll see.
Pub 2759, West London Union Trades Club, Acton. 7pm opening beauty. Mine host Colyer (not a Geordie coal miner) served me a fine Leatherbritches. Then a gorgeous couple n prob African dude pop up, she is Denmark Germany border. Give them every award! (Shut up Questors)
End of a quality Leics hol (95% done) from BRAPA pub of the decade contender, Rutland Arms in Sheffield.
See you all next week for something a bit more south western and the 10th anniversary celebrations 🥳.
Good morning all ☀️. Day 3 of this
#BRAPA
London pub blitz. 67 left.
Continuing to focus on the SW where only 8 remain.
Train delays + slept in = late start but I'll claw it back. Have a decent Tue. 🍻
Good morning all. ☀️. Devon holiday done ✅. 49 ticks takes me up to 67.7% completion 🎉. Special thanks to
@LangdalePete
for his help with the cruel mid north. I'll leave you in peace now. Off home to rest my lizard 🦎
#BRAPA
Pub 2733, Bishop's Finger, Smithfield. Big talking point is they've stopped brewing the eponymous beer for cask six months ago, unfortunately for this pub. "You'll have to rename the pub 'The Late Red' Tavern" I quip. No one laughs obvs. Businessmen outside plot evilly.
Time for a late pub six, Colmore, Birmingham? Denied entry! ‘We’re not letting lads in?’
‘Eh?’ I reply
‘Enough lads in, gaffer only wants ladies in at the moment’
Wowwww, craziest reason for a pub rejection ever. Sexist Thornbridge. Who’d have thought?
Good morning pub lovers,
Today I'll be ticking somewhere between York and Plymouth.
Have a great day and please go to a pub so I'm not drinking alone
#BRAPA
🇬🇧🍻 🚆 🦢 🖊️
Pub 2864, Butterleigh Inn, Butterleigh. Utterly butterly, and v rural! Great carpet less farm bugger. Met Naomi from Aus (doesn't watch Neighbours tsk) and local lads Phil, Tom n Samuel. Remembered me from Tiv. Great sesh. Driving me to next pub. Even had feet out weirdly!
Pub 2898, Lych Gate Tavern, Wolverhampton. Lovely multi leveller. Bit drunk. Not my fault. Obviously. Best outside. Air cooling. Buildings like being in some gothic European extravaganza. Carpet yes. Beer a bit strong. But I chose it.
Parcel Yard, King’s Cross. Didn’t think it was on! Had to leap like a gazelle up all escalators n leave Daddy B for dust. ESB at its pungent best, barman has a biblical demeanour and the rug is a fruity 8.5.
