Breaking: The U.S. Department of Justice has opened a civil rights investigation into the State of Oklahoma, Oklahoma City, and Oklahoma City Police Department.
According to a release from the DOJ – “The investigation will examine whether Oklahoma fails to provide community-based mental health services to people in Oklahoma County, leading to unnecessary admissions to psychiatric facilities and police contact.”
"The investigation is being conducted pursuant to Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act, which prohibits disability discrimination by state and local governments."
DOJ says they've notified the Oklahoma Governor's office, AG, Department of Mental Health, the Oklahoma Health Care Authority, Oklahoma City’s Mayor, City Manager, Municipal Counselor, and Chief of Police of the investigation.
INBOX: Leaders of the Five Tribes – including the Cherokee, Chickasaw, Muscogee, Choctaw and Seminole Nations – are endorsing Joy Hofmeister (D) for Governor.
A DOJ official said the Oklahoma County Jail will not be a focus of the investigation, but individuals with mental heath diagnosis within the jail could be part of the investigation.
