When 2D images are used in the way they're generally called billboards. It's used most often for small and distant objects to save processing power, but some games, like ours, use it to create a specific art style.
Paper Mario is the most well known example. 😊

I'd like to also state that this isn't anything new. These problems have been going on for years.
Back when I started composing professionally, I decided to sign the handful of soundtracks I had with Materia. It seemed like the smart choice at the time. . . 8/14
