Back from vacation with some personal news:
This is my last week on the Memphis beat for the Daily Memphian.
Next week I head down to Texas to cover all things TCU and more for the
@startelegram
.
Couple years ago Tubby Smith told Memphis fans they needed to be realistic about who the Tigers could sign. Now Penny Hardaway has the No. 1 class in America.
Mood:
Johnny Hodges said he was surprised at how cocky Michigan was leading up to the Fiesta Bowl, also added that overconfidence is why he knew TCU would win.
Max Duggan says when he talked to Kirby Smart at Heisman Trophy weekend, Smart told him they practiced the 'bazooka field goal' after watching TCU's game vs. Baylor.
Max Duggan said Andy Dalton reached out to him after the loss to Kansas State in the Big 12 title game. Said that meant a lot to him to hear from a TCU legend.
TCU beat Michigan because Steve Avila and them boys got physical with one of the best DLs in football for 263 (!!) rushing yards.
That vaunted Michigan secondary? Couldn't hold Quentin Johnston. Let's not try to rewrite what happened in that game.
Wes Harris says he's expecting a big TCU crowd at the National Championship game. Says the fans caused the fourth down fumbled snap at the end of the Fiesta Bowl
Emoni Bates said today was the first time he's had fun in awhile. Said mentally some of the outside noise was weighing on him, but he felt like his old self today.
Johnny Hodges says he reached out to every Power Five school in portal, says Northwestern was the only school to respond and they said he wasn't good enough.
TCU was his only offer in the portal and the Horned Frogs are glad to have him.
I like Joel Klatt a lot. So about this “help” TCU got…
Sonny Dykes said himself they got word Michigan was stealing signs and adjusted as a result. That’s it’s.
Ball up top.
How much did Michigan pay for this Propaganda piece
- Klatt says Michigan has already been punished fairly for Sign Stealing
- Also says TCU had help beating Michigan
-Didn’t have the potential No. 1
Pick.
-Missing another starter that was a top 50 recruit.
-Six point underdogs
Memphis just snapped the nation’s longest home winning streak. Don’t tell me Penny Hardaway can’t coach.
In typical Duggan fashion, the TCU QB says there are bigger fish to fry than winning the Heisman Trophy.
Joked he'll be traveling with an iPad with Michigan film on it.
Regardless of how the season ends, the story of TCU isn't them being a cinderella to me.
It's about a coaching staff doing a GREAT job of maximizing the talent of a roster that has a quality group of NFL-type guys plus more.
As Sonny Dykes said, it's not by accident.
Max Duggan didn't win the Heisman, but his trip to NYC was still a success because he got to represent the school he loves.
"Having TCU be on this national stage, it means so much for our football program, our athletic department, our university."
Penny: "We have four freshmen starting, y'all need to act like it. Act like we have 17 and 18-year olds trying to learn how to play against 22, 23 and 24-year old guys. Stop disrespecting me, bro. Don't do that. I work way too fucking hard."
Wild sports year for me. In March I was covering Penny Hardaway taking Memphis back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in forever.
Now? I'll end 2022 covering TCU's first CFP appearance and a likely Heisman finalist (winner?). Damn.
So it's official now. I'm happy to announce I'm headed back to my hometown soon to cover the Memphis Tigers football team for the
@dailymemphian
.
I'm thankful for this opportunity and wouldn't have gotten it without the help of the amazing
@DandC
team:
Sonny Dykes was asked about TCU navigating the gauntlet of the Big 12 without a bye week.
"You are not going to catch The Citadel in Week 10. We caught Texas."
Max Duggan said TCU is moving in the right direction. Said the loss is tough, but the players aren't going to let the loss takeaway from the season they had.
Can confirm the
@PeteThamel
report that TCU head coach Sonny Dykes has received a contract extension with an additional year being added to his contract through 2028.
Nice reward for the potential Coach of the Year.
Lester Quinones says the atmosphere and the support from fans around Memphis makes players want to play harder.
"The city itself is a basketball city. Everywhere you go it's about the Tigers or the Grizzlies."
Max Duggan says him being a Heisman Trophy finalist shows and says a lot about the support he's gotten from the TCU and the players he's been able to play with.
"I think it kind of gets lost in all these awards, football is a team sport."
All-Big 12 picks for TCU:
First team:
Max Duggan
Kendre Miller
Quentin Johnston
Alan Ali
Steve Avila
Derius Davis
Griffin Kell
Dee Winters
Josh Newton
Tre'Vius Hodges-Tomlinson
Second team:
Johnny Hodges
Story time: I had a choice whether to cover TCU or a very prominent NFL team back in ‘22.
I took a gamble and picked TCU and thanks to the fans and the program (Dykes, Dixon etc.) safe to say I do not regret that decision.
Max Duggan says he was a college football nerd and remembers watching
@RGIII
, Jameis Winston and others win the Heisman.
Said it was always a dream to be in the same position
TCU lands a massive commitment from Duncanville star Kayden "Bugg" Edwards. Ranked a top-100 recruit, one of the most prolific scorers in Texas and the country.
Just the latest sign that TCU is starting to recruit at a different level.
Talking to the players, it really seems like Larry Brown has taken a bigger role with the offense.
Lester Quinones and Alo attributed the Tigers' improved ball movement to the contributions of the Hall of Fame coach.
Some personal news: Excited to announce I'll be moving over to the Memphis basketball beat full-time for the
@dailymemphian
.
As a lifelong Memphian, I know how much basketball means to this city. This is an opportunity I've always wanted and one I appreciate. Let's get to work
