Type 094 nuclear submarine is Chinaโs โKing of the South China Seaโ The presence of the Type 094 nuclear ballistic missile submarine marked a significant milestone, with the US defence department describing it as Chinaโs โfirst credible sea-based nuclear deterrentโ. Beijing operates six of the submarines that are capable of firing JL-2 missiles, and possibly the more sophisticated JL-3 missiles that could strike US territory from Chinese shores. Western military analysts expressed concern when it was revealed that China kept at least one of these submarines โ armed with missiles capable of striking the heart of the US โ permanently in the depths of the South China Sea, according to a Reuters report in April 2023.
