Harper wants to opt out after three years hoping that he can go back into free agency and ride Mike Trout’s coattails to a bigger payday. Trout is a free agent after 2020 and will set the bar well beyond Harper’s deal now.
One of the obstacles in the

negotiation for Harper is the opt out. The Phils prefer an opt out after 5 years and Scott Boras wants an opt out after 3 years. I can’t imagine that it’s a deal-breaker for either side but it has been an obstacle to slow the process.
