If Buster Posey is a sure-fire HOFer, and I think he is,then why did Jorge Posada get less than 5% of the vote and drop off the ballot after 1 year? Posada has 117 more HR and 336 more RBI and a comparable WAR. Posada has 5 rings to Posey’s 3 and Jorge was better in post-season.
We need to recognize what we are seeing in MLB today...this is the greatest era of young talent to ever come to the big leagues as a group. Trout, Harper, Lindor, Ramirez, Betts, Judge, Soto, Acuna, Baez, Bryant, etc.
For those who think the
#Mets
should fire Beltran: How can they justify firing him for something he did three years ago when a member of another organization and the Commissioner didn’t deem him worthy of penalties? He is different than Hinch, Luhnow and Cora.
Joe Torre explained that Turner was called out not because he was running out of the 45-foot line but because he interfered with Gurriel catching the ball. The ball and Turner arrived at same time at the base. That is when Turner has the right to be in fair territory. Bad call.
Possible snag in Machado deal to Dodgers. Sources indicate that one or more of prospects coming to
#Orioles
have some issues in their physicals. Surprise surprise. May open door for other clubs. Stay tuned.
Today is the 15-year anniversary of the infamous Scott Kazmir trade ‘tween the
#Mets
and
#Rays
. Where in the world are Victor Zambrano and Bartolome Fortunato? Btw, this was not my trade. I get blamed for it still. I was fired a year earlier. Wait, that sounds like bragging.
I am so tired of everyone making excuses for Madison Bumgarner. If anyone hits a HR against him somehow it’s an insult. His behavior is completely inappropriate. MadBum got mad at Max Muncy because he took him deep. Muncy didn’t show him up at all. Bumgarner needs to zip it.
The opposing starters in games vs Jacob DeGrom have delivered a combined 2.39 ERA. That means he has faced what would be the second best pitcher in the NL in his 30 games started.
Ok so isn’t Ian Kinsler the same guy who called out players from PR and DR in the WBC for over celebration and showing too much emotion? I think he said “those” players were raised differently. Didn’t he just bat flip and cross home plate screaming “f— all of you!” Hmmm
I want to clarify reports that the
@Dodgers
consulted with me before giving all of the deferred comp to Shohei Ohtani. They did not. But I am sure glad they did it, because it takes me off the hook for Bobby Bonilla. July 1, 2024 just got way better for me.
Max Scherzer is an MVP candidate. He won’t get it, but he has single-handedly willed his
#Nationals
team to turn their season around. He is the most inspirational player in baseball. In June he went 6-0 with a 1.00 ERA. The Nats were 19-31 on May 23 and are now 42-41.
A source indicates that the
#Phillies
believe their chances of landing Bryce Harper are remote. The obvious question is whether they would pivot to Keuchel and/or Kimbrel. My sense from our interview with Matt Klentak is that they won’t play on Keuchel and only maybe on Kimbrel.
True story. Chris Russo calls me and says, “Stevie, How do I get to your house? I asked if he has GPS. He answered, “No I don’t think I have that.” So I met him at a McDonalds and led him to my house.
Baseball is the best sport. In NFL, 14 of last 15 Super Bowls have had Manning, Brady or Big Ben as AFC QB.In NBA, LeBron in last 7 championship series. In MLB, no repeat champs in 17 years and since 2006, every year at least 1/2 of clubs in playoffs one year are replaced the next
Per sources: Josh Donaldson and the
#Braves
are close to finalizing a one-year deal. This would reunite the
@BringerOfRain20
with Alex Anthopolous, the exec that brought him to the
#BlueJays
in November 2014.
I know the
#WhiteSox
are disappointed they didn’t get Machado but the
#Padres
understood something they did not: If a teams wants a superstar to commit to 2 years of losing on frontend of deal, then the player is going to want the team to commit to 2 years of decline on backend.
I know a lot of people have said that yesterday was a bad day for baseball but I feel the opposite: It was a good day! The game is now healthier and the integrity on the field has been restored. It was Rob Manfred’s finest day as Commissioner.
I am not in favor of the rule which says a pitcher has to face three batters when entering game. It puts pitchers at risk and completely changes how managers use their staff. Plus, it will likely not have the desired effect on pace of play. Lesser relievers leads to more offense.
Please please please let’s get automated umpires. Home plate umpire Marvin Hudson just missed two pitches in Brett Gardner’s at bat, including a called third strike. It’s ridiculous. Two runners on. The count should have been 3-1 and instead he is called out on strikes.
Bad news for Scott Boras and Bryce Harper: per a source the
#Yankees
“will not be in on Harper.” Not a complete surprise as indicated by re-signing of Brett Gardner. Seems Machado and pitching additions are Plan A.
I don’t want to hear any old school players saying they should just let he players police the game themselves. Someone could die in a beanball battle. There is no place for this in the game. It’s gutless to throw a ball 95 mph at someone intentionally.
The big advantage the
#Mets
have headed into this off-season is that they will be the only team in baseball whose owner didn’t lose big money in 2020. Every other team is looking to cut back to make up for losses. Not the Mets if this Steve Cohen deal gets finalized.
Brandon Nimmo, the
#Mets
outfielder, can play for my team any day of the week. Down 24-1 he laid out for a sinking liner in right field last night. He missed it and it turned into a triple but it doesn’t matter, he plays the game the right way.
It seems to me that the
#Phillies
interest in Bryce Harper is overblown if in fact they did not meet with him and Scott Boras in Las Vegas. If a player is one of your primary offseason targets and he is taking visitors down the street, you stop by and say hello.
If Acuna Jr is injured then Urena’s suspension should be at least as long as Acuna is out of the lineup. That would served as a deterrent. That would change the game.
#Justice
If you are looking for one team that could dominate the Hot Stove this winter consider the
#Braves
. They have young studs on roster with Freddie Freeman locked up long-term. They have close to $59M coming of books. They can afford Machado, Harper and Kimbrel and stay under $160M
OMG. Home Plate umpire Doug Eddings just ejected
#Phillies
pitcher Yacksel Rios for hitting
#Dodgers
3B Justin Turner with a breaking ball. Turner started appealing on behalf of Rios that he shouldn’t be ejected. Every time I think I have I seen it all...Baseball Happens!
So many players are upset that no
#Astros
players were suspended, yet if they had been, the Players’ Association would have filed grievances and vigorously defended them. And the PA would have won those grievances.
For all those that are upset with Fernando Tatis Jr swinging at a 3-0 pitch in a 10-3 game in the 8th inning: in the last week, clubs scored 6 or more runs in an inning, 12 times. The game was not over.
#unwrittenrules
If this was last year
#Yankees
GM Brian Cashman would claim Justin Smoak off waivers from the
#BlueJays
and make a deal to acquire him. Making teams go two months without anywhere to go to replace an injured player is ridiculous. Move deadline to August 15 or add roster spot.
I would love to have Zack Wheeler on my team but he is a scary FA option: a career ERA+ of 100 which is average; averaged 21 GS/year and less than 6 IP/GS. Teams offering $20M/season are expecting him to be much better than he has ever been. Paying for potential is risky business
If Joe Espada,
#Astros
bench coach, has gotten the manger’s job in San Fran would he have had to step down? What if Ron Roenicke, RedSox bench coach, had gotten a manager’s job this offseason, would he have had to step down? What about the hitting coaches with RedSox and Astros?
I don’t understand the lack of love for Larry Walker. Only 31% of his total plate appearances were at Coors Field. He hit .313/.400/.565 and won three batting titles and an MVP. Writers didn’t hold Coors Field against him in the MVP vote but they are in the Hall of Fame vote.
It sure doesn’t feel like the
#Nats
offer of beyond 10 years/$300M to Bryce Harper is still on the table. Or he has no interest in returning. It feels more like Boras is trying to manipulate the demand by pulling more clubs in at a lower level and trying to build it back up again
@Buster_ESPN
I think the
#Braves
will sign Harper. They have $47.5 million in payroll this year tied up in Adrián Gonzalez (released-$21.5M), Brandon McCarthy ($10 M) and Scott Kazmir (released-$16M). Harper will fit nicely into that budget space for the next 12 years.
I know that $24 million seems like a lot of money but just to put that in perspective for Steve Cohen. Saving $24 million to a person worth $14 billion is the same as a person who is worth $100,000 saving $171.42. That is astounding wealth!!!
#Mets
So do you think the
#Dodgers
will ask Max Muncy to make a recruiting call to Madison Bumgarner? I can hear it now, “Hey man, did you ever get that ball out of the ocean? If you join us, I won’t have to take you deep anymore.”
#Giants
Everyone wants to make
#Dodgers
SS Manny Machado out to be a villain but I disagree. I believe
#Brewers
1B Jesus Aguilar provoked Machado by intentionally blocking half of the base. Manny intentionally kicked at Aguilar but in response to the 1B positioning on the bag.
I still can’t figure out the
#Mets
pursuit of JT Realmuto. Realmuto is a great player but robbing “Peter to pay Paul” doesn’t make them better. They need Syndergaard and a catching upgrade. And bullpen help. And starting pitching depth. And an upgrade at 3B and 1B.
@jcrasnick
This is absurd. A 32-yr old OF, Cain, got 5-yr/$80M. JD Martinez has 5-yr/$125M offer. Hosmer has two 7-yr offers. Those are beyond fair offers. This is about agents who misread the market looking to blame someone else. If JD, Hosmer, Darvish and Arrieta sign the rest will follow
I respect that Mike Rizzo, the
#Nationals
GM, jumped all over RP Shawn Kelley when he showed up manager Dave Martinez in their 25-4 win last month. Make me realize I didn’t have Bobby Valentine’s back as much as I should have when he was my manger. Bad job by me.
#Mets
Rob Manfred is right! Players have to accept responsibility for still being unsigned. They aren’t victims. They are perpetrators. Harper wanted $400M and Kimbrel wanted $100M. Those # were non-starters for some clubs and pushed them to Plan B right out of the gate.
It is interesting how when players use steroids we punish the players, and not the team. When players steal signs, we are punishing the teams and not the players.
#PEDs
#Astrogate
#RedSox
Where are all of you who called out
#WhiteSox
SS Tim Anderson for his bat flip earlier this year on a HR that you didn’t deem important enough for such a reaction? Chris Paddack,
#Padres
’ young starter, fist pumped and roared after strikeouts of Alonso in the 1st and 3rd innings.
Enough of the talk about a three-man battle for the NL Cy Young Award. This is a one-man race. Jacob DeGrom is by far the leader in the clubhouse. Aaron Nola and Max Scherzer have had great seasons. deGrom has been better. It’s not close!
Another brilliant move by
#Yankee
GM Brian Cashman. They get Terrance Gore from the
#Royals
. Gore goes to AAA as depth and insurance. He will come up in September and win a game as a base runner. This is the kind of guy who might have been acquired in August in the past.
Why are the
#Mets
trading for a closer when there is a plethora of them available as free agents? Sure Edwin Diaz is great but there are FA playoff-caliber ninth-inning options. Sign one and keep your prospects. Or expand the deal to get Mitch Haniger not Diaz.
The
#Yankees
have three big injuries in Severino, Sabathia and Hicks. They will all be back and there is no reason to panic. Why? Yankees only play 13 of their first 56 games against teams that had .500+ record last season. That includes DBacks who lost Pollock, Corbin and Goldy.
Pretty creative move by the
#Mets
. As a prospective seller, by acquiring Stroman, they changed the supply side of the equation without changing the demand side. This makes their starters (Syndergaard and Wheeler) more valuable in trade discussions with teams in need of starters.
I have never understood fans booing their own players. What are you trying to accomplish? Do you actually believe your going to inspire the player to better performance? News break: it is completely counterproductive. Its your right, but it’s not right.
#Booing
This is such a hard story to comment on because I really like Alex Cora, Carlos Beltran, Dave Dombrowski and AJ Hinch. I believe in redemption and 2nd chances because I received them. So, I hold out hope that all of them accept responsibility and make amends and get a 2nd chance.
I have a great idea. In addition to Major League Baseball games ending in ties. Why don’t we also hand out participation trophies after the game to both teams?!
Being a great competitor doesn’t justify picking fights every time you fail. Muncy’s response was great. “Go get the ball out of the ocean if you have a problem out it.”
#Giants
#Dodgers
Twenty-two years ago today I got my first win as the GM of the
#Mets
. Butch Huskey drove in Edgardo Alfonzo with a single up the middle in the 10th inning for a walk-off win over the
#Cubs
.
#GloryDays
.
Let me preface this by saying I personally have no problem with bat flips and celebrations of good performance. But where are the people who criticized Tim Anderson’s bat flip on Steve Cishek’s post-save celebration? What is the difference?
After seeing George Springer crash headfirst into the wall, can we all agree that it is time to make every warning track the exact same width in every stadium? It needs to be standardized. Outfielders should confidently know how much room they have as they approach the wall.
What I don’t understand is that if Bryce Harper really has an offer from the
#Nationals
well beyond 10 yrs and $300M why hasn’t he accepted it? By now Scott Boras knows the comfort level clubs have for 10+ years. If
#Phillies
prefer Machado it seems nobody else will go 10 years
The loss of
@BringerOfRain20
for the
#Braves
is more than just his production offensively and defensively. He brought an edge that Atlanta really needed and is now lacking. They have a lot of really nice easy-going guys. JD played with an intensity and anger that is now misssing
At some point the
@Mets
need to sign Pete Alonso to a long-term deal. Whatever that deal looks like it will cost almost twice as much because the Steve Cohen tax within the CBA.
The fact that Noah Syndergaard is starting tonight means that the
#Mets
probably aren’t that close to a deal getting done. I wouldn’t pitch him if there was any chance of a deal getting done. The risk far outweighs the reward.
I understand the benefit of the three-batter minimum for pitchers during the regular season. But I would like to see the rule dropped for the post-season.Managers should have the ability to use whatever pitchers they want without regard to how many batters they face.
#winthegame
Did you know that the last 3 World Series Champions combined had 33 pitchers who appeared in the Series and only 3 of them were homegrown? This reinforces that rebuilding teams should draft and develop position players and find pitching where they can along the way.
Home Plate umpire Dan Bellino missed three pitches in the same spot in the top of the 4th inning against the
#Yankees
: inside to righty and away from lefty hitters. That can change an inning and the outcome of the game.
Bo Bichette,
#BlueJays
shortstop, is a six-tool player. He can hit for avg and power. He can run and steal a base. He can field and throw. That’s five tools. And he has the “IT” factor as his 6th tool.
I like going to Osuna here. He hasn’t pitched in a game since October 6, I believe. Hold the deficit and try and win in the 8th or 9th.
#Astros
#RedSox
The most interesting part of Darvish signing with the
#Cubs
is that they didn’t engage with Jake Arrieta at all. I always watch how a team pursues its former players. The Cubs know Arrieta better than anyone and they chose Darvish over him. Not a good sign for the Boras client.
It is fair to say...John Gibbon is one of the most well-respected managers in baseball. He is tough, fair, supportive and consistent in his approach and demeanor. He has served the # BlueJays well. If he wants to stay in the game there is always a place for a man like him.
One of the greatest privileges of my life was to work between Joe Morgan and Jon Miller in the Sunday Night booth. And although Joe, understandably, didn’t need/want me there, he treated me with respect and dignity as did Jon. Joe was one of the best players and analysts ever.
The umps in the Rangers/Padres game yesterday should be fined. It is indisputable that the pitch thrown at Machado was intentional. Rule book says if umpires deem a pitcher intentionally throws at a batter there are 2 choices: eject the pitcher or issue warnings. They did neither
Harper wants to opt out after three years hoping that he can go back into free agency and ride Mike Trout’s coattails to a bigger payday. Trout is a free agent after 2020 and will set the bar well beyond Harper’s deal now.
One of the obstacles in the
#Phillies
negotiation for Harper is the opt out. The Phils prefer an opt out after 5 years and Scott Boras wants an opt out after 3 years. I can’t imagine that it’s a deal-breaker for either side but it has been an obstacle to slow the process.
I am not one who tends to believe in Karma, but.....four grand slams in four games for the
#Padres
against the
#Rangers
. It’s almost like San Diego is asking, “Is this grand slam ok?” “What about this one?” “Did you mind if our guy swung at that pitch?”
#UnwrittenRules
Madison Bumgarner not getting traded is worse thing for
#Giants
and him. Giants lose out on prospects to kickstart rebuild and it all but guarantees MadBum gets a qualifying offer which attaches compensation to his free agency. Can you say Dallas Keuchel?
The more games I watch, I am convinced that an automated strike zone will add much more offense to the game. Catchers steal so many strikes off of the plate right now. When pitchers don’t get those calls and have to throw it over the plate to get hitters out they will get rocked
Aaron Judge has a career OPS of .976 which ranks with other
#Yankee
greats. Joe DiMaggio had a .977 career OPS. This weekend Judge (less than 2 seasons) will likely match DiMaggio (13 seasons) in another category: CAREER K’s. Judge has 364 to JoeD’s 369. The game has changed!
As much criticism as the
#Mets
took for hiring 82-year-old Phil Regan as pitching coach, there needs to be acknowledgement that it was the right move. If they fired coaches for underperformance then the new guys deserve credit for the turnaround.
Can we please cut the ivy off the walls at Wrigley? This it ridiculous. Unfair to Rockies that runner stops at 3B because ball lost in ivy. Could have cost
#Rockies
a run.
Sources indicate that the
#BlueJays
will announce before today’s game vs
#Astros
that John Gibbons will not return as manager in 2019. He will likely finish the season with the club.
The
#Yankees
are a much more appealing playoff team today than they were three weeks ago. They now have three starters throwing well with Chapman back at the end of the game. Judge’s return to the lineup makes them a team to be feared.
Plus, why did Sam Holbrook make that call about interference at first base when Jim Wolfe the 1B ump had a better view of whether Turner interfered or not?
Hahahahah. Hahahahah. Angel Hernandez going for the trifecta. One overturned call in Game 2. Two tonight. Stay hot! He has more overturned calls tonight than the
#Yankees
have hits.
