The ongoing Santorini Earthquake Swarm has taken a whole new turn... Here's my latest report on the seismic crisis there:

Me: The difference here is that the Nisyros Earthquake Swarm racked up that 1567 tally over 2+ months, whereas the EQ swarm near Santorini has only been active for a little more than a week (Jan. 28 to Feb. 6 2025) and by some estimates has already exceeded 1600 earthquakes

between 7 April 2021–30 June 2022 a total of 1567 earthquakes occurred. The first of the strongest earthquakes M5.2 took place on 13 April 2021 (ML 5.2) 21 June 2021 a M5.7, 1 August 2021 M5.4. The minimum and maximum depth of the events is 2–23 km.

From Nisyros volcano belongs to the eastern part of the South Aegean Active Volcanic Arc, between Kos and Tilos islands. It is an active volcano like the rest of the volcanoes of the Volcanic Arc, which are Methana, Sousaki, Milos and Santorini.

The seismic swarm in the Aegean Sea is intensifying...it could just be tectonic, but personally I think there's more to it:

~520,000 years ago there was a VEI8 eruption near Santorini, and ~1600 BCE was the famous VEI7 Minoan Eruption. Now we have a massive earthquake swarm occurring in the same volcanic field and rapidly increasing in earthquake frequency and magnitude.
