I wrote a VERY honest application for a postdoc position out of my expertise and got invited for an interview. The question is - do they think I could be good for them with my background or they just want to see who is this crazy person 😂 Will see soon 👀
My small teaching project is done. 📽️ A series of videos about crystal structure refinement!
I struggled a lot when I was learning it myself and couldn't find resources that would describe/show it sufficiently, therefore decided to take care of it. (1/5)
Stirring bars can turn life into a hell if they’re contaminated with some transition metals. Apparently, if they’re clean but made of wrong material, they can cause problems too. (1/3)
THESIS SUBMITTED. Thanks to those who supported and believed in me and f*** those who doubted that this boy can get into Oxbridge and do some cool science 🎉
What are the chances for getting a paper published at
@NatureChemistry
on one's birthday?🎂We show that [18]annulene dianion not only looks different than claimed 51ys ago,but also can be reduced further to a tetraanion,forming a metallocene-like sandwich!
Happy to present first paper of my PhD in
@HLAGroupOx
and seventh overall 😍 I think both CPP and porphyrin people are going to like it 😊 A lot of inspiration taken from previous works of Osuka and
@mvdelius
. (1/3)
Finally published! We are showing structural evidence for global aromaticity in a macrocycle, anions of which have been known for >40 years but were never crystallized! It took us 3 WEEKS to get all the crystal structures 😂 (1/4)
My first corresponding, two-author paper, at

😁 X-ray structures of porphyrin nanorings. They’re more flexible than you think! We
@HLAGroupOx
report 3 pseudopolymorphs and a fullerene cocrystal. Look at this nice packing! (1/3)
NO BRIDGES. NO LINKERS. DIRECTLY LINKED. We report first example of directly meso-meso linked porphyrin nanoring from 5,15-diarylporphyrin. EIGHTEEN porphyrins in a ring 💍 (1/3)

Just signed my postdoc contract! Very happy to announce that I’m going to Germany and joining
@Besserchemistry
lab 🔋Looking forward to getting involved in the research community of Ulm and Germany! Many new things to learn and, hopefully, also many structures to determine ☢️💎
And after graduation I showed to my mum and her partner some X-ray diffraction experiments. They didn’t fall asleep and asked questions so I guess that went ok.
@RigakuOxfordXRD
I'm writing my thesis and just wanted to remind everyone that this excellent review written by
@MajewskiMarcinA
and
@stepienlab
exists and describes synthesis of (strained) macrocycles/molecules! Proved to be very useful for my intro section. 🧪✍️
No, it’s not a lab accident - it’s made of ice! That’s a result of evaporation of solvent using ice bath on a rotary evaporator 😍 Faces of labmates before I mentioned it’s ice - priceless 😅 fun at

Thank you Qiang for involving me (just a tiny bit) in this
@NatChem
study and super huge congratulations everyone on the results of your hard work on these spectacular porphyrin nanoribbons!
I was invited to write an opinion article for Chemistry World about the importance of sharing what didn’t work within the context of our recently published results. Have a look!
Got crystals that have perfectly circular shape. And they diffract! 😍 Unfortunately they’re too small and I will have to wait for the repair of our rotating anode instrument. View from two different perspectives:

Just started my 2-month research visit in group of prof. Marina Petrukhina in Albany, NY 🥰 My baby macrocycles are waiting for me in a freezer after being shipped for some insanely large amount of money 😅Now trying to deal with jetlag and culture shock 😝
Over 2 years after the project started and a lot of hard work our our team, it’s finally out! My fifth paper from the period of my BSc studies! If you like anthracenes and aromatic macrocycles, check it out!
@PawlickiLab
(2/3) During work on this project, I managed to aromatize a nanoring but couldn’t reproduce it. After months I realized that when it worked, I used a stir bar that went black after other rxn with Li. Apparently, teflon reacts with active metals and forms species that interfere!
Super happy to win the prize for my talk at
@polymatsptl
, a big thank you to organizers, sponsors and all participants for your kind words and support! (1/3)
Super huge congrats to
@IagoPozo
et al. and thank you for involving me a little bit in this project! 😍 If you like porphyrins or vanadium or EPR or any combination of these words, have a look!
@ithinkwellHugh
Sorry but it is NOT possible to plan three years of a PhD in experimental subjects like this 😅😅😅 Sometimes I don’t even know what I’ll be doing next week because it depends on a results that I will get tomorrow 😝
/ wow! crystals!
[diffract suspiciously too well, small cell]
Apparently, instead of a desired compound crystallised from decalin, the crystal that I measured for a postdoc is... decalin hydroxyperoxide!

New video in my SC X-ray series, this time an example of a non-merohedral twin; we process and refine data of a single crystal, then of a twin but treating it as a single crystal and then of the twin treating it like a proper twin, and compare the results!
I’ve realised one of my childhood dreams - used cesium metal 🥹
It becomes liquid after warming it with hands and you can just pipette it😍

Exciting theoretical study, especially “de-convolution” of the AICD plots of these anions summarizing what
@aromaticity_eu
has been tweeting a lot about. Imho if real and correct, this is quite revolutionary for the field. Now grabbing popcorn 🍿and waiting for comments.(1/2)
Global π-aromaticity in conjugated macrocycles does not stem from the resonance of Kekulé structures but from the superposition of Clar structures that already possess local π-aromaticity: "Decoding Aromaticity in the [24]paracyclophanetetraene Anions"
THIS PAPER WILL BLOW YOUR MIND
@PawlickiLab
@cojawidze
discovered and experimentally verified through-space delocalisation in a figure-eight system - electrons prefer to go through space making the currents not cancel each other! 😍😍😍
@ChemistryWorld
Finished dealing with my most complicated structure so far: 5 disordered THFs, whole disordered macrocycle, two atoms sharing same site (exyz,eadp used for the first time!) +unstable in the air. Fun 😅

Measured, processed, solved and refined my first twin! 😍 A lot of heavy metals inside, fluorescence issues and measured resolution up to 1.13A but it worked! 💡🔫💎✨ Of course, the structure is crazy as usual in our group 😂

Okay, it happened. I think I can call myself a CRYSTALLOGRAPHER now. A professionalist said my way of modelling of a specific disorder is better than theirs and asked for a .res file.

Okay that diffuse scattering looks hot. A stacked complex of two molecules. Makes my life a hell but it’s beautiful🥹 Am I right
@stecanossa
@ntumanov_Xray
(2/3) We use an idea of a covalent template. First we make radial 18mer by cobalt-catalyzed cyclotrimerization. I think it’s the largest molecule obtained in this type of reaction (molecular weight > 21kDa !!! ) Then we just stitch zinc(II) porphyrins together.
It feels weird that Oxford didn’t want me for undergrad 7 years ago and yesterday I was the one who was interviewing some of the Oxford PhD applicants 😅
I'm writing a paper and it's amazing how easier and just more fun the whole process looks like, having written the previous ones and seeing how much my writing skills progressed over time! 😍 [also getting a heart attack looking at the quality of images in my BSc thesis lol]
That pain, finding at the end of preparing SI that synythesis of a 'known' compound used by many research groups actually has never been reported and you have to measure all NMR, MS data and change all numeration...
@RealTimeChem
@HLAGroupOx
@mvdelius

We added a section in the SI about reactions that did not work and what were our observations. For example, for reductive aromatization that made my life a hell for 6 months… I think it’s important for other researchers!
As I'm leaving the group soon, I'm inputting some of my useless structures to the
@ccdc_cambridge
. Check out 2375759-2375761! Here for example are halogen-bonded dioctyloxy diiodobenzenes. They form bendy crystals because of that, was quite diffucult to find a good one bc of that
(2/4) Work with these anions is difficult because they hate any traces of oxygen and moisture so we had to use some fancy techniques. All stars aligned for us and in three weeks, we crystallized everything and diffracted the crystals at synchrotron. Everyone worked intensively!
