Been a fan of Jeff Beck's playing since the first time I heard Shapes of Things in 1966. The Yardbirds were the first band to turn me on to guitar-driven rock, and he continued making great music right up to the end. I salute his memory.

Applebee's failed in Hattiesburg because there were a half-dozen better places to eat literally within walking distance of their location. They'd have been better off on the west side of I-59, where the likes of Chili's, Olive Garden & O'Charley's are booming.

I can think of no greater tribute to a good man than the fact that it was literally standing room only for Forrest Phillips' funeral this afternoon. A lot of tears and some laughs as Hattiesburg remembered a life well-lived.

On the subject of high school playoffs. It is time for the MHSAA to go back to taking just two teams for each region in football, at least in 4A, 3A & 2A. In those classes, there are 12 teams in postseason with 3 or fewer wins, including three with just one victory. Ridiculous.

Southern Miss took a big step forward in the second half against Grambling. Not sure if it was Ty Keyes coming in or fatigue on the part of Grambling, but things just seemed to click after halftime. This is a young team that is going to keep getting better.

Every indication seems to be that Southern Miss made the best hire it could make in Will Hall for its new head football coach. He already has contacts with some of the top HS coaches in the state, especially Oak Grove's Drew Causey, who was a teammate of Hall's at North Alabama.

Ask anyone. It was the 1982 Tangerine Bowl vs. Missouri. It was 28 in Orlando that night with a 30 mph wind howling out of the north. We were in the end zone, long before that stadium was expanded, just metal bleachers & it was like sitting on a big block of ice.
