When URA realizes in 2 months that the NGO sector is not remitting PAYE, and the deaths spike through the roof, then the govt will make a plan. But don’t forget that with over 80 MDAs rationalized there won’t be the manpower to maneuver or adapt. And it’s election season too!!

In this @DailyMonitor opinion piece, I argue that the abrupt closure of USAID by President Trump will not only hurt countries like Uganda where they’ve been working, it will hurt the US as well. USAID has worked in education, healthcare, governance, human rights etc; impacting hundreds of millions of lives and shaping the future of innumerable countries from the poppy fields of Afghanistan to the sprawling savanna of Uganda all through the undulating hills of Rwanda. Every nook and cranny of the developing world from the Americas to Africa to Asia, has been graced by gifts “from the American people”. In Uganda, the Americans fund a huge portion of our HUV care budget. By some 2023 @MinofHealthUG estimates, we are looking at more than 80%. Questions need to be asked as to what’s going to happen to nearly 1.5 million Ugandans who rely on these services. We haven’t started talking education, governance, media etc. Gloomy times ahead.

This question is important especially when you consider how vocal digital /community/ social media managers are!

"4. Why are technical people in Uganda silent? Why are our scientists not speaking up? This post is made mainly to ask question 4, above. What has happened to us engineers and scientists? Why should we see things burning and we don’t come out to speak? How do we hope to contribute to the development of our cities and nation?" This always bothers me. It is like you people are visitors to this country and there is somewhere else you will go when the *heat* inevitably hits the fan! Why are many Ugandan professionals so averse to publicly sharing what they know especially when they are aware we live under a peasant tyranny? Surely, there's ALWAYS one or three diligent officials somewhere that pick up on some good and help us move one step forward.
