More information coming very soon.
Good news for the day : I am very pleased to announce that I have been appointed as a lecturer at the Australian National University! Looking forward to new horizons!
I am delighted to start a new period of my career at the Institute of Contemporary History in Vienna from today where I will begin work on my next major project: "Rethinking Decolonization in the French Indo-Pacific.”
Very proud to announce the program of the international workshop ‘Cold War Disconnections and the Transformation of Internationalisms’ hosted by @ global_discnct on 8-10 June 2022 in Munich!

More than happy to see my article on fascism in Indochina in the wartime 1940s, crossing Vietnamese, Japanese and French historiographies has been accepted in a French popular history journal... after so many years, I am left without words.
I had the chance to read some chapters while I was a fellow at Harvard. This book will stand as a major historiographical intervention. Its author, Charles Maier, has transformed my way to think, approach and write.
First day as a visiting professor
@LMU_Muenchen
where I'll be working on my new project "After the French Empire. The invisible history of decolonization, de-imperialization and de-cold war". Humbled and honoured to have this opportunity!
When I get an email from Jay Winter about my book manuscript, and he says "it's fascinating," "I'm capturing very well contradictions in the French approach to human rights and colonialism." It gives a sense to all the work, sacrifices, sleepless nights.
Accepted for publication! After few changes, my article entitled "The Imperial Precipice: Jurists and Diplomats of the French Empire at the UNWCC" will be soon published at the Journal of the History of International Law.
It really is an honor to start this fellowship at
@GlobHistHarvard
. It is also a challenge to move from the study of jurists & diplomats of the French empire to recover invisible voices of agents from the Global South, and more particularly from Vietnam, Algeria and Madagascar.
Would anyone be interested in joining this fall a writing group in history, international law and/or international relations? Writing groups are always a great source of inspiration and encouragement.
Meeting of the International Congress against Imperialism and Colonialism in Frankfurt by 1929 with Nehru, Roger Baldwin, Henri Barbusse, emissaries from the Guomindang, etc.

Good to see my manuscript 'Lawmakers in a Colonial Dystopia' coming along. It's like a kaleidoscope with 8 chapters, starting in 1919 in Saigon & ending in 1979 at Phnom Penh's Chaktomuk Theatre, and all reflecting various aspects of IL & self-determination.
Writing always takes me time. It took me three years to research legal pluralism in French Indochina and the transregional and international ideological dynamics at play in the struggle for decolonization and explore how they influenced the development of modern Vietnam.
Manuscript submitted to my French editor! See you in 2025 at my favorite French village bookstore for the book launch and a deep dive into Nuremberg, Tokyo, and more!
Bien souvent, les travaux en français de chercheuses dans l'histoire de l'Asie-Pacifique demeurent méconnus.
Un thread pour présenter ces travaux trop souvent invisibles et révéler leur diversité et qualité:
Indochina travel poster, 1946. While this vintage poster aimed at reminding the French settlers of Indochina’s strategic focus at a time the First Indochina War started, it also betrays the sense of fear that haunted those who supported the French empire.

One of the best books I read in a while! I love Lüthi’s writing style and analysis of the Cold War. It is clear, and not filled with meaningless words, which look smart but actually are totally empty.
I am honored to be part of this remarkable workshop exploring the intersection between Western modernity, decolonization & oceanic historiography. A testament to the significance of transpacific connections.

An idea for a PhD: Japanese soldiers in the Viet Minh ranks.
The archives I found are stunning. C. Goscha told me the subject is fascinating.
@michelinfranck
raised the importance of this subject in his book,
I can hardly believe that we are through the first Quarter and that I got an email today to confirm that I passed through the probation period as an assistant professor at the ANU.

4 years ago, my PhD was awarded the Jean-Baptiste Duroselle Prize of the Institut d'histoire des relations internationales contemporaines for the best history dissertation. The ceremony took place at the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It's a unforgettable memory!
Delighted to share that the online vernissage of my exhibition 'Hanoi-Potsdamer Platz' on the Vietnamese migration in Europe will take place on January 27, 2022.
A tour in Europe is to be followed at the end of the spring 2022. Still much to discuss with curators!!
I worked on this for many years: the cover is here (out in March 2024).
Normally, I would be so excited about this moment. But I can't feel any happiness in my heart these days.
I can nonetheless still feel

Some thoughts on the so-called 'Harvard problem' - For 3 years, I have volunteered to investigate cases on sexual violence in academia. A thread on what I have learnt - and unlearned - along the way.
Last year, I made some major changes in my life. I relocated from Munich to Vienna and then from Vienna to Canberra. I began teaching at the ANU. Today, I received the news that my class evaluations were above 95%. It has been an arduous yet beautiful journey.
What are the real origins of the idea of a legalist world organisation? And how did the League of Nations movement impact the Japanese empire building and global geopolitics? To learn more, participate in the next GHIL seminar!

I did not have the chance after the workshop “Internationalisms and Cold War Disconnections” to thank the participants and those who helped. It was a true pleasure to welcome you, ponder your presentations, and just discuss with you all over lunches and dinner.
Pierre Brocheux died today. He was a major historian of Vietnam. He introduced me to the complex historiography of French Indochina and always took so much time to give me advice on my writings. He will be very missed in academia. My best thoughts to his family.
Delighted to participate in the panel 'Anticolonialism, Decolonization and Rethinking Global Order' of the GHI 'Global Histories of Colonialism' workshop. Thanks so much for the stimulating questions and interest!

offers interesting insights on the Afro-Asian jurists who changed the paradigm of international law and human rights as they championed national self-determination between the Bandung moment and the 1970s.
1st time I presented my book 'An Empire of Laws' & my paper 'Colonial republicanism on the Mekong.' Feedback was positive & enriching!
Thanks so much to William Mulligan, Robert Gerwarth and Kate O’Hanlon for making this presentation at UCD possible. It was so important to me!
In 1938, the sinologist Jean Escarra published in France a book entitled "L'Honorable Paix japonaise." In his foreword, the description of the geopolitical context is fascinating (see below).
