Some news I haven't gotten around to sharing: early this month, I left Seattle to drive 86 miles north to my new home in Bellingham, WA. For the next two years, I'll be covering rural issues for Cascadia Daily News as part of the Murrow News Fellowship.

Feeling increasingly like I'm sharing things into the void on this site, so thought I'd try a different void. If you'd like to follow me there, I'm @sophia-gates.bsky.social I still plan to keep posting here for the time being.

For decades, a beloved local farm has helped launch aspiring farmers in Whatcom County and served as a model for growing fruit in Western Washington. This year, Cloud Mountain is pausing fruit production. It's the end of an era.

In east Whatcom, access to full-service grocery stores is limited - and often involves long drives. I talked to one resident to get an inside perspective on living in a food desert.

P.S. - to write this story I learned a good bit about the history of groundwater vs. surface water regulation, only some of which made it into the final piece. Open to any and all tips for future stories on this topic.

In December, @charlotteaalden and I each took a different bus route all the way to the end of the line. I took Route 75 to Blaine and Birch Bay, a route prioritizing covering more area. She took the popular Routes 331 and 232 around Bellingham.

Back from my holiday hiatus, I'd like to share my most recent article: about the man who single-handedly revived a small town's newspaper. A rare story about the news industry that made me feel hopeful.

So excited to read the brilliant @GoldsteinStreet's dispatches from Olympia. The Herald's loss is the Standard's gain.

Some professional news: After three and a half years there, Monday was my last day at the @EverettHerald. Next week, I’ll be joining the @WAStateStandard, where I’ll be covering state government. Very excited for this next chapter and to return to reporting full time.

And finally, @haileyjhoffman and I got to spend some time at Foothills Food Bank in east Whatcom earlier this week. One person biked to the food bank and back, hanging the bags of food she collected from her handlebars.

Read more here. As much as I always assumed audits were dry reads, I found this very compelling in illustrating a disparity between government intentions and on-the-ground reality.
