On Monday, a group of politicians, party representatives and public figures called on President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi to release detained activist, writer and software developer Alaa Abd El Fattah. The appeal was launched at the home of academic and activist Laila Soueif, who has been on hunger strike for 127 days demanding the release of her son. During the conference, attended by Mada Masr, participants signed a statement read by the family’s lawyer, Khaled Ali, who stressed the urgency of the call, warning that "medical reports indicate [Soueif] is on the brink of death.” The statement argued that releasing those imprisoned for their beliefs would not only be a humanitarian response but "a strategic decision that would foster a more conciliatory political climate." US President Donald Trump brought talk of displacing Palestinians to Jordan and Egypt in comments to a press pool aboard Air Force One on Saturday night. “We just clean out that whole thing,” the US president said. “I’d like Jordan to take people. I’d like Egypt to take people,” said Trump, stating that such a move “could be temporary, could be long-term.” Since October 7, Israeli officials have called for the displacement of Palestinians in Gaza to Egypt, echoing long-held plans of ethnic cleansing. Egyptian officials, including President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, have repeatedly rejected even the suggestion of such a move saying it is tantamount to the liquidation of the Palestinian cause.
