Never Again?

Almost exactly ten years ago, I got my shot in venture. I was a former culture journalist. I’ve written about it often. When people found out that I got a job in venture capital they laughed or were completely befuddled. “What the hell do you know about business or tech?” Nothing. I knew nothing. When I got my first full time role as an associate at a great firm, the general partner who hired me told me this on my first day: “The other people we interviewed know a lot more about venture capital than you. They have a lot more experience than you. In fact, everyone wanted to hire someone else. But I hired you because you made me think, you made me question, and it was clear you were going to work harder than anyone else I talked to.” They trained me. I worked harder than anyone else. I’d say it worked out. When hiring for talent, the moonshots look nonobvious. The best people for the job often have zero experience. But you can tell when someone is an uncommon talent or person. And if they’re going to work harder than anyone else, you take that bet every day.
