I had a brilliant student. On one of his papers, I asked if he was considering grad school. At the end of the semester, he told me that he wasn't even considering a BA.
Now, he checks in with me every semester to tell me how grad school is going.
#CommunityCollege
is important.
#AcademicTwitter
: What academia-related things are you thankful for? I'll start.
I'm thankful for "nodders". The students who nod as you lecture. They're so encouraging and awesome. Every class needs a "nodder"!
When we denigrate
#CommunityCollege
, we devalue people, both faculty and students.
Now, I've got a pretty healthy case of
#ImposterSyndrome
, so I don't really care if you devalue me.
BUT DON'T YOU DARE DEVALUE MY STUDENTS AND THEIR ACCOMPLISHMENTS.
Is it acceptable to list: "I somehow managed not to lose my f*cking sanity" as an "accomplishment" on my annual faculty self-assessment form?
#AskingForAFriend
I'm at my new faculty orientation today, and WOW. There really is nothing quite like starting at an awesome workplace after leaving an unbelievably toxic workplace.
[Thread] I went to Disney World over Thanksgiving break. It's one of the busiest seasons of the year. The crowds were intense, and the lines were LONG. People were not on their best behavior.
#AcademicTwitter
: How has your research area ruined you?
For example:
I study terrorism. In social situations, when people ask my occupation, it tends to be a conversation killer.
One of my students told me today she was accepted into grad school. She thanked me for believing in her, but she's my hero. She overcame the death of a parent & class/race/gender barriers. I've written her 8 letters of rec, & I'd write a dozen more. Her grad program is lucky!
I took a contract to write questions for a criminal justice textbook. Whenever I do hypotheticals, I always give my criminals high-class white people names (e.g., Preston). 🤣
The shooter:
✔️Is a white supremacist;
✔️Carried out an attack motivated by his extremist political ideology;
✔️ For the purposes of inciting additional violence AND changing social/political behavior;
✔️Chose a symbolic target.
👉That makes him a terrorist.
#ElPasoTerrorist
I threw up all nine months with both my kids. My first pregnancy tore my abdominal muscles apart, which required surgery to repair. I almost died during both of my pregnancies.
And I WANTED my children.
No one should EVER force anyone else to give birth. EFF this.
I've been looking through the twitter account that appears to be connected to the
#MAGABomber
. Lots of conspiratorial thinking. Repetitive posts of chemtrails, images of death (lots of graphic stuff). TONS of interaction with
@realDonaldTrump
, as well as other politicians. 1/
I want to rant about this a bit. I'm not mad at INDIVIDUALS in my life, but I always get REALLY FUCKING PISSED at societal expectations this time of year.
If you don't think the holidays are a fucking stressful nightmare, then chances are you're a child or an adult dude. 1/
And if you’re a woman? Congrats, you get all the good AND bad parts of independence along with all the social expectations to help everyone else around you adult.
Martha Crenshaw was one of the few people to specialize in terrorism studies prior to 9/11. She was (& is) so groundbreaking & exceptional, that it's hard NOT to cite her research in any terrorism paper. A male-dominated field, & she is at the TOP. She's a GIANT.
Please name a female academic (current, retired, or deceased; well-known, or unknown; any discipline; any country) whose story inspires you, and explain why you find her inspirational. (I am in the mood for inspirational stories.)
That's what the smug commentators fail to see: The migrants they vilify are just like them. Like all of us. They love their families. They love their lives. They just want to save their loved ones. We would do the same thing if we were in their shoes.
I always like tweets from students who successfully defended or academics who got hired or tenure, even if I don't know that person. I'm just really happy for them. 🙂
New semester, new
#PunkProfessor
hair.
This time, I did it myself!
(There's a reason I'm not showing my ears. It may or may not be because they're blue.)
My point? Before you start talking crap about migrants, ask yourself how you would react to being treated like an animal, with no hope or assistance, at their most desperate point in your life.
I'm now fully vaccinated, y'all!
The second shot's side effects were absolutely brutal... But I expected as much. I always get really bad side effects from vaccines. Flu-like symptoms for 48 hours sucks, but you know what sucks a hell of a lot worse? Dying alone on a ventilator.
My college: "Enrollment is down, our budget has taken a hit, so we will have to make painful cuts this year."
Also my college: Prints the professionally designed "Welcome Back Faculty" assembly program for 5k people on glossy, heavy-weight paper in full color w/full page photos.
Well, I finally did it.
I finally leaned too far back in my office chair and fell over.
I stayed on the ground for a while and contemplated life.
Naturally, I documented this occasion with a selfie, because why not?
And recognize that this is orchestrated by the Trump administration to bring about exactly this result: Push them past their breaking point, and they can be vilified. This is intentional and inhumane. This is human tragedy, and to those who are complaining: YOU'RE NO BETTER.
When I was a TA, one of my students shared a story about how you sat next to her on a plane and sexually harassed her all the way to California. She was 16. This would have been approximately 16 years ago. You would have been about 60. Well past middle age. Do you remember her?
Re
#BrettKavanaugh
How many men & women-deep in middle age-are embarrassed by shit they did in high school &college? After decades as responsible adults:How much time must pass before distant-hazily or inaccurately recalled events-should still have power to disqualify or destroy?
We're getting ready to go through a really rough ride on a lot of fronts, but where YOU can either help or hurt is regarding disinformation. Political actors inside and outside the US will capitalize on this, so be more careful than usual sharing unverified info. I'm begging you.
I have so many angry, angry thoughts. What if... And I'm just speculating here... But what if us delicate ladies piled up degree after degree... And it had nothing at all to do with an effing man?
Millennials are the first gen of women to reject marriage to instead pile up degree upon degree, resulting in debt that, while supposed to help them get established for marriage, instead dealt them a cruel blow: They can't afford to.
@SuzanneVenker
If you're trying to figure out how to feel about what Trump has done today, you should all go look at the Twitter feeds of experts in terrorism, authoritarianism, and political violence.
We are afraid. You should be, too.
This is one of the best analogies I've ever read for why people stay in abusive relationships.
Chris Hardwick deserves the right to respond to any allegations, but Chloe's essay is pretty damning. I believe women.
I'm honestly thinking about creating a private Twitter DM group, or maybe a discord server, that's dedicated to sharing information about these kinds of events among LEGITIMATE researchers/experts.
The smug people are the same kind of people I saw screaming at Disney employees because they had to wait a little longer to ride a roller coaster. The people who showed bad behavior at Disney hadn't walked thousands of miles, running for their lives. They hadn't waited for days..
@delphadraws
I don't know you, but I know how much depression sucks. I hope you feel better. Plus, when I saw the 7th pic on my phone, I felt like I was obligated to share!
We were having a discussion with my 13 year old daughter about all the stuff you get to do when you turn different ages. When we said 18, I said "You get to do a ton of stuff!" And she said, "Yeah, like voting, and.."
Dude, voting was the first thing she said.
#ParentingWin
I never ask for things, but y'all, I need your help. I'll explain in this thread, and then RT with the "TL;DR".
As some of you may know, my husband has recently been struggling with a lot of health issues. I don't make a lot of money, and unfortunately, he's had to quit his job.
By the way, in case you don't know me: I'm a terrorism scholar, I teach graduate level courses in terrorism studies, and I specialize in US domestic terrorism.
This is what terrorism looks like.
Well... I'm probably not going to be online for a while, considering the hurricane is now forecast to hit really close to home. Fingers crossed, folks. I'm off to buy supplies.
Right now, I'm in a two person camper with my entire family, including my very conservative dad. You know how I know
@ewarren
has a chance? She's the candidate my Dad likes the best. He says she's the most likable and genuine. He told me, "She's got a plan." I was floored.
Well, it's past midnight, so I guess I'm officially 37 now. I don't know why but it's always the "7" years that make me start to realize how close I am to the next decade.
I would have run over each & every one of them if it meant getting the love of my life to safety. I was desperate to save him. Thankfully, I didn't have to do that. But if I needed to, I would have crawled through barbed wire, I would have braved tear gas. I would break the law..
Here's the tea: When men get married to women, they get happier. They're healthier. They're less stressed. They're paid more. When women get married to men, the exact opposite occurs. This is because women are EXPECTED to help with adulting. 16/
Friends, it is with a very heavy heart that I announce my resignation from Gardner-Webb. It has and will forever be my great privilege to work with my students and colleagues, both of whom have taught me so much over the years.
@lsmith14698
@joanwalsh
I'm not negative. I'm angry. I'm furious. And I'm really mad about the constant focus on "both sides". Both sides are not equal in power, and both sides are nowhere near equal in culpability. My whole life, I've been conciliatory, and that's viewed as weakness.
Today, for the very first time since I started teaching 6 years ago, I put a "I'm away for the summer!" message on my office door where my schedule is supposed to be.
I literally don't know what I'm going to do with myself.
@lsmith14698
@joanwalsh
We can look at the larger stats for the past few years, and see that RW motivated terrorism is the biggest threat, and that threat is growing. Also, context matters. The shooter appears to have referenced the "caravan" on social media. Don't both sides this.
Ummm.... People were beaten to death and burned alive. College kids were shot at Kent State. Bus riders were murdered.
@repjohnlewis
had his skull fractured. MLK and RFK were assassinated. What hell world are you living in?
"The Anti-War movement in Vietnam ... The Civil Rights movement ... both of those were much more civil in tone":
@David_Gergen
on the 'uncivil discourse' of politics in 2018 compared to other historical divides
I got back to my office from lecturing, and my mother calls me to tell me how excited hubby is about his Twitch followers. I logged on to the stream, and he's playing with our 6 y/o son, who is ECSTATIC. Our family needed a win, and you all made it happen. Thank you so, so much!
Start thanking women for all the uncompensated emotional and physical labor they do. Want to know the best way to thank them? FUCKING HELP THEM. Don't wait for them to ask, and don't accept hero worship just for helping. Just. Help. 13/
I hate reading student evals, because I'm too freaking thin-skinned. 50 great reviews, and my brain will focus on the ONE bad one. Had to read some before a meeting today, and the reviews were all awesome! Plus, there was this one, and I am both relieved and ecstatic!
Can we stop w/ the narrative that teachers are indoctrinating students? I can't get my students to do the readings, much less to turn into communists or whatever.
Truth is, students learn other perspectives & they make up their own minds. Stop infantalizing college-aged adults.
So... I'm gonna be hit by a really big hurricane, so I'll probably be offline for a while. Keep my part of the world (NC & SC) in your thoughts. I've got family helping us leave, but not everyone is as fortunate.
Sometimes I look at my timeline, and my followers, and my DMs, and I freak out a little because I still cannot believe that such cool ass people follow me.
Just had a student stay after class to tell me I was a "good talker", because I was able to keep her interested. That made me so happy I almost cried, especially considering we were covering research methods today!
Remember to tell people positive things whenever you think them. We are quick to say negative things, but we often hold back our compliments.
You never know when somebody might really, really need to hear something good today. 🙂
I've seen a lot of people discussing hills they're willing to die on. What's yours?
I have a few:

"Guesstimate" is NOT a word.
Real chili has beans.
@ me.
Our laws are not ready for AI. Our elections are not ready for AI. Our media is not ready for AI. Any you know what? You're not ready for AI, either. Read this thread, read up on Deep Fakes, and be afraid. Be very, very afraid.
Women don't get praise for being the breadwinner. They get what Hochschild called "the second shift", where they get home and are STILL expected to take on the expectations of women in our society when it comes to housework/childcare! 8/
I had a student in my class today tell me that they felt comfortable sharing their opinion--which was not the most popular among their classmates--even though they didn't feel comfortable doing that in their other classes.
That's gotta be the best compliment for a prof EVER.
No joke:
@Victor_Asal
is the goodest of eggs! His constant willingness to help EVERYONE has made me a better person. If you're not following him, you're missing out!
This drives me insane.
I always tell my students that they're right: politicians don't care about them. However, that's not a reason to abstain; instead, that is a reason to vote. The reason politicians don't care about young people is BECAUSE they don't vote.
If we're willing to add trillions to the debt just to give rich people a tax cut on the assumption that "growth" would fix everything, we should really look at how childcare programs could create huge economic growth, especially for women.
At $70 billion/year, Warren’s universal child care program would cost roughly what Congress added casually to the Pentagon budget with no debate or even rationale
My 89 y/o wheelchair-bound grandmother apparently masterminded an attempt to break out of the nursing home. She got an able-bodied lady who also has dementia to help her escape. She was convinced that she had a car outside so she could hide out at her Mom's (who died in 1987).
I've been working as an academic since 2013. Full time since 2015. I've never had a travel request approved for any conference, not even via reimbursement.
NC needs to treat their higher education folks better.
I've got a ton of respect for Meadow Pollack's father, even though we disagree on gun policy. On
@KatyTurNBC
today, he comforted a young survivor who got emotional talking about banning AR-15s. Class act. We don't have to agree on anything to be kind to one another.
I've literally worn sweatpants every single day since the pandemic began. It has been glorious, and I'm really going to miss it when everyone returns to work.
In 1663, the partial fossilised skeleton of a woolly rhinoceros was discovered in Germany. This is the “Magdeburg Unicorn”, one of the worst fossil reconstructions in human history.
Preach.
Academia is not a meritocracy. So many brilliant scholars never make it to a "prestigious institution" for TONS of reasons that have NOTHING to do with talent.
Plus, community college students are amazing!
My mother won best dissertation in the country for her English thesis on Pynchon in 1987 & was teaching women’s studies in the early 80s. She chose to work at community college bec she had me & needed a steady salary w/o worrying abt publishing/committee work. So fuck you
I'm a straight, white, CIS female. I talk a lot in my classes about the overlapping social movements that happened from the mid-1950s to the mid-1970s...But I've been neglecting the origins of the LGBTQ movement. Anyone got a good, concise but complete history for an intro class?
