Anyway, if for some reason you want to keep up with my nonsense (sadly non-Grok-enabled), I'm over here:

The OED doesn't know where the word "tantrum" comes from. I think I have a promising lead:

Once you start using language like this, it's very hard to escape from it.

And there are plenty of aspects and arguments that I haven't covered here, but the piece was already too long. Other views, as the saying goes, are available...

Someone in parliament needs to make them a template that's roughly square (so it won't be too badly compressed on either kind of screen), set to maybe 16-point text

Interesting thread, although I had to keep stopping to tell myself "EHRC is Equality and Human Rights Commission, ECHR is European Convention on Human Rights"

The @EHRC has issued a note on the Assisted Suicide Bill and although they are neutral on it, it's quite scathing of the Bill (in a very polite way). Indeed, they identify potential breaches of the ECHR in the Bill, various legal issues, and concerns about implementation 🧵👇

Now, I know what you're thinking. "But Tom! Prog 1 was dated 26/2/77, 8710 days before 1/1/01, and 8711 days later is 7/11/24, not 13/11/24." However, the cover date wasn't the release date; it was the date newsagents took it off display. Release date was a week before: 19/2/77.

Hugely different issues, of course, but this reminds me slightly of the 2017-19 Brexit period, with govt trying to define a previously made decision, and parliament voting to require ministers to do things they didn't want to. Maybe not an amazing precedent for lawmaking... 4/4

Mandelson could be a capable US ambassador, and a capable Oxford chancellor - but not both at once. There'd be conflicts of interest. Loyally serving the UK govt vs speaking freely on HE issues. Lobbying the US govt vs courting well-connected potential US donors. Nope.

Lord Peter Mandelson now running hard for two big jobs which he believes are complementary: UK ambassador in Washington and chancellor of Oxford. He can play Iago in the court of King Trump and tap into American philanthropy for Oxford’s needs. And he knows his trade stuff from his time as EU commissioner in Brussels. Quite the pitch!
