Rollercoaster of a day:
1. Awarded a highly competitive Innovate Grant (gives me success in every Innovate Grant Call I’ve applied for now).
2. My oncologist tells me I’m terminal at 28 years old. Any good ideas on what to do with my last 7 months of life?
#nevertooyoung
So today I turn 29, bit of a strange birthday. It’s the first without my Dad and statistically it’s probably my last. 5 months ago we didn’t think I’d even make it here so that’s something to celebrate 🎉. Now onto fighting to make 30!
For anyone following my cancer journey, the scans were good! I’ve had no spread and the heart tumour is still stable with a some shrinkage! I’m all okay for surgery! Surgery will be in the next couple of weeks!

Chemo on Wednesday, FSB Awards for Young Entreprenuer of the Year Award on Thursday.
Smashing life, I think that deserves the champagne!

My tumour has shrunk! We were expecting growth, this was technically a baseline scan and is being compared to Novembers scan.
It’s shrunk 1cm x 0.5cm but realistically it’s likely shrunk 2-3cm.
I’m documenting my journey to raise awareness -
I'm not sure if I should be happy or scared but I have a surgery date for next week! This is a million miles from where we were in January. Now I just need everyone's fingers crossed for a negative margin!
Didn’t win the first bottle of champagne but won the Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award - and a standing ovation 🎉
Can we have champagne to celebrate?

Sitting in the

ward and I’m younger than the other 29 people in here by at least 30 years. I know
#cancer
affects 1 in 2 people but I never thought it would hit me at 28 years old.
I can’t urge people enough to get any health issues checked early!

Update - my oncologist phoned this morning saying the appointment will be rearranged for next week, he also said they’re really happy with the scans I’m having a good response to chemo and the plan is to operate!
After a very intense 2 weeks medically it’s nice to come back to work and see we’ve been awarded another Innovate UK grant to progress our antimicrobial technology towards GLP-tox studies!
Surgery update, they got all the tumour out on Monday but unfortunately on Wednesday I had type 1 respiratory failure and Ct-scans have shows a severe infection in my right lung. I’ve been in intensive care since whilst they try to find out what’s up :(
I don’t think I’ve ever cried on social media but some things can’t be left unsaid. I’ve waited a month for an appointment with my surgeon to remove my heart cancer and an admin error meant I didn’t get to have it. Mistakes cost lives :(

I have been nominated as the Sarcoma UK young sarcoma voice of the year. Not sure what chance I have against a 24.7 million subscribers YouTube sensation 😂. But you can vote for me here -
MetalloBio's CEO,
@SmittenKirsty
, has been awarded a Royal Academy of Engineering Enterprise Fellowship. The Fellowship will support MetalloBio in the development of antimicrobial materials.
I was interviewed on my
#PhD
and career yesterday on
@biopatrika
. I spoke a lot about my supervisor
@GroupThomas
My advice, the supervisor is just as important as the project. I wouldn’t have my career without Jim. He’s the most supportive person I know and I’m very grateful.
Another successful end to the week for
@BioMetallo
we’ve been accepted onto the second stage of the biggest AMR grant going, signed the letter of intent with our lead investor and I’m having surgery!
Who said you can’t run a company well whilst battling heart cancer?
At the
@MedilinkUK
healthcare awards because
@BioMetallo
is up for the Start-up of the Year Award!
Star struck because
@RichPaxman
, CEO of
@scalpcooling
, the machine saving my hair in chemo is here. Thank you for letting me keep a piece of me in all the rubbish that is cancer.
The irony around developing a new drug for antibiotic resistance and then spending the last 5 weeks fighting multiple antibiotic resistant infections post surgery. Having pneumonia back to back three times in a row with different pathogens is 0 fun!
We won the Rebel Start Up Award for being the most disruptive start up but then the night was made when we won the overall award for evening out of all the finalists from the 31 award categories of the night!
A huge congratulations to the team at MetalloBio for being crowned the overall winner of the North East, Yorkshire and the Humber StartUp Awards 2023!🏆
All the best for the future guys🎉

At 28 years old I was diagnosed with a cancer that affects 1 in 20 million and has a 7 month prognosis. I have started a blog to document my journey, increase awareness and improve future patient outcomes. The first post is out today - share if possible.
In my continuous good luck my tumour turned resistant to paclitaxel.
My follow up chemo will be doxorubicin (the Red Devil) and isofamide. Renowned to be one of the toughest chemo regimes :(.
Followed by a potential first ever treatment of proton beam with isofamide.
Showing my innovator creativity here - freezer socks to cure the face burning rash caused by paclitaxel.
Next I’ll be designing my own cooling face masks. Watch this space 👀.

Happy to have been awarded the
@healthtechworld
Young Health Tech Leader of the Year Award.
Simon keeps joking we'll need a trophy cabinet in the office soon.
The last 3 weeks have made me realise just how dangerous it is for immunocompromised patients to be in hospital.
I’ve been in hospital again this week for a potential clot and have ended up with a multi-drug resistant lung infection. Infection control needs to be better!
Really pleased to announce
@BioMetallo
won the
@RoySocChem
Emerging Technologies Health Category after impressing an expert panel including representatives from AstraZeneca and Eli Lilly.
The validation, support package and funding will accelerate our technologies development.
And finally, please join us in congratulating this year’s

2 weeks ago I had open heart surgery to remove a cardiac angiosarcoma tumour from the right atrium of my heart. In this week's blog post I discuss the operation and going into type 1 respiratory failure.
Continuing to run a company whilst losing a parent and going through a really serious medical problem myself is one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do.
I’m so grateful for the amazing MetalloBio team ❤️
Recently I won the Innovate UK Women in Innovation Award. Yesterday I was interviewed about MetalloBio and the Award on
@yorkshirelive
. Also today I’ll be BBC Radio Sheffield the Paulette Edwards Show at 10.10 am.
A nice end to the Metals in Medicine workshop, winning a poster presentation prize for my work on ruthenium polypyridyl antimicrobials.

So today is the day I have my pre-operative cardiac MRI and staging CT scans. If the scans show no progression or metastasis my surgery should be the first week in June. My life is riding on these scans so to say I’ve got a bit of anxiety is an understatement!

Whilst sitting in hospital waiting for my surgery I have finally started the blog back up. It's been a busy few weeks. In this post I discuss the second opinion.
We really do need that trophy cabinet now!
Congratulations to my
@BioMetallo
team for winning the
@MedilinkUK
Start-up of the Year at the National Medilink Healthcare Business Awards last night!
Every chemo seems to be hitting me harder. I fell asleep for 2 hours after today and some side effects have already started.
My haemoglobin plummeted between my last two bloods which explains the exhaustion and the patchwork quilts bruises on my legs!
We’ve just had a paper accepted in ACS Pharmacology & Translational Science 🍾 . Thanks to an excellent collaboration with the McLean group at

By 2050 antimicrobial resistance is expected to cause 10 million deaths per year globally. Listen to our interview on CBS news last year where we discuss this threat and how our compounds can be used to reduce these deaths.

Non-academic related post. Just received my hockey trophy for last season and it’s the creepiest thing I’ve ever seen it’s like they forgot to finish the face 😂.
Brilliant day today at the
