Hi
@david_jenkins__
if OFMD doesn't get renewed, can you promise to at least let us know how their love story would end?
I would be okay with any medium - a comic, a tweet, a full length movie. But I need a cannon ending.
#RenewOurFlagMeansDeath
Izzy's whiteness is a central part of his character and why he's the villain/antagonist. He fetishizes Ed. He aligns himself with colonizers when he can no longer control Ed.
Sometimes I wonder about how many men have fallen for Stede Bonnet and shamelessly flirted with him, but he's just been oblivious because compulsory heterosexuality is a bitch.
@UtterlyVapid
Seeing her post cringey photos makes me so happy. She's free to be weird and do whatever she wants. She's been objectified by her family, the media, and the whole world, and now she gets to be the one who chooses what to show the world. I love her and I'm happy for her.
Ricky is such a good foil for Stede. He actually IS all of the things Stede was called in Season 1. He's this bored aristocrat who is "slumming it" in the Republic of Pirates because he wants excitement and to be cool and famous, but he doesn't care for the pirates. 🧵

@nbpiratecrew
I also liked how it seemed like Jim was figuring it out at the same time. Like, no, I'm not a man... But no, don't start perceiving me as a woman. But then they don't have to fully explain anything except that they are still Jim! And everyone accepts it and moves on immediately.
Still thinking about that thread about breathwork in acting that implied Ed actually stepped towards Stede in the "you wear fine things well" scene because he thought *Stede* was going to kiss *him*.
I don't think the tonal shift in S2 is as big as it seemed at first. I think the actual big tonal shift is between all the fluffy fanfic I've read over the past year and S2.
I'm serious about
@BBCTwo
you guys. Half the cast is British, the show is hugely popular there, Rhys is popular there. And they know how to do limited series very well!
"We're goners. Those of you who can swim would be wise to do it now" has the same energy as "Last night was a mistake." Ed gives up at the first sign of things going wrong.
#ofmd
They cancelled Firefly and the fans took out a full page ad asking for renewal. And they got a movie.
The cast still do panels at cons every single year.
It feels like such a gift that David Jenkins and the writers gave us a definition of love that's based on it being easy, feeling comfortable with someone, having that person appreciate YOU for yourself. It's just so *healthy*. It means so much to me.
@a_kats_life
@lyraatlaw
I think this is probably more common than we think. I have stopped watching any SA scenes in media because I started to realize it felt like it was filmed in a way that appeals to people who enjoy seeing that. 🤢
@gentIebeard
I love this whole thread!
I think Lucius was middle class - when Stede bought the map, he says he paid more money than Lucius has ever seen. I imagine his parents were teachers or maybe his dad was a pastor or something.
It's really important to me that Stede did tell Ed off for headbutting him. As much as he is clear that he wants to reconcile, he's not going to accept any kind of behaviour towards him because Ed is hurting.
Do you think David, Taika and Rhys are logging on to twitter these days and asking "what the fuck is piña coladas? Is this a new fandom drink?" Meanwhile Vico is frantically refreshing Lottie's page every day along with the rest of us.
😭 "we spend our entire lives trying to become whole, trying to put together all the pieces of ourselves into the mosaic of the person we want to become. the kraken was always just another part of ed he had to learn to love himself for"
#ofmds2
Ahh I also didn't realize until this moment that in the moonlight kissing scene in S2, Ed and Stede walking off *together* is a parallel to them parting after the S1 moonlight scene 😭
@nbpiratecrew
Maybe he'll be picked up by the lesbian pirates (that I am manifesting) and somehow his journey will end up bringing everyone back together again.
Do you ever just think about how sweet and supportive Doug is? Mary's husband returns and he doesn't act competitive or jealous, he just softly encourages her to continue living her life the way she wants, and to not hide that from Stede.
Now that I'm thinking about Archie... Is Archie basically who Pete told everyone he was?
Like, Archie *was* on Blackbeard's crew, and is a good shot, and has no sleeves. And, well, also tells wild stories... But maybe they're true?
What really bothers me is that people think there's something wrong with liking the show now. I'm not going to tell anyone they should have liked it, but why would anyone act like you have to hate it?
This tiktok talks about the importance of soft masculinity in both Ted Lasso and Our Flag Means Death.
@AppleTV
there's clearly a gap in the market that you could fill if you

Can we talk about what a good chef Roach is? Because he just whipped up those tapas, made a 40 orange glaze, and has that perfect breakfast set up for Stede and Ed every morning.

@hbomax
I've been feeling very "stop trying to make fetch happen" about calling them the ajo polycule (ajo means garlic + it's an acronym of their names), and sopa de ajo (with Zheng) but I'm feeling VERY vindicated right now with this caption!!
@dvkerose
I'm happy for it to be renewed at any time and I understand the PR reasons behind renewing during pride. But I think people are frustrated that they've been leaving us hanging for so long just to get an extra boost during pride. It feels exploitative of the community.
This entire tumblr post is excellent (link below), but this part is such a good summary of why Ed and Stede's relationship is a unique one for TV. It's such a refreshing romance, there's so much tension and so much genuine care.

@AppleTV
Ed's basic act of respect towards Stede by believing him when he says he's a pirate allows them to enter into this meaningful relationship, and to expand what they ever thought was possible for their lives. 6/6
Say something nice about the finale challenge.
I'll go first, Ed saying "you wrote me a lovely letter" and running after his love is maybe the sweetest thing I've ever seen 🥹
Can't stop thinking about how when Ed was absolutely losing his shit from fear during the act of grace scene, Stede could probably only hear Izzy's speech. Stede doesn't understand how scared Ed was in that moment! 😭
@butchanarchy
I'm worried about how young people are being radicalized by conservatives to think that anything sexual is dangerous, and how that's being weaponized against queer people.
I was struck by Ed being so interested in all the stuff on Stede's ship, it's not like he's never raided ships with expensive things and knick-knacks before - he's just never had seen them as having a place on a pirate ship. 4/6
What if Stede blacked out after badminton died and just came to when he was home/near home? Kind of like Jim waking up with the forest after their dad was killed.
But instead of perceiving Stede as someone playing pirates like everyone else does, Ed immediately accepts him - and is fascinated by his new take on piracy. 3/6
@gentIebeard
And maybe his mother was in service so she taught him how to work for the upper class (he knows how to valet for/ dress Stede).
So I think privileged compared to the rest of the crew, probably, but not upper class or really wealthy.
Whereas others see those things and discount Stede's legitimacy as a pirate, Ed sees "all of this brilliant stuff" and it expands what's in the realm of possiblity for him. 5/6
The crew don't accept Stede as a pirate ("we don't even have flag") until he proves himself. Izzy never respects him as a pirate ("pirates, my ass"). Neither of the Badmintons believe he's a pirate ("he's from my world, not yours "). 2/6
What if Ed, at 40, is actually very sympathetic to what happened on Memorial Day? He still thinks back to it sadly, wonders what could have been. But now that he's lived another 20 years he realizes just how young they were. He realizes how hard things must have been for Stede.
It's 2005. Mary hasn't felt connected to Stede in years. She's taken up painting and now that she has something that truly makes her feel joy, she had less and less patience for him and his melancholy. She finds herself fantasizing of ways to end him. 1/7
@eddieenjoyer
Yessssssss... And it's telling that he doesn't try to blackmail Lucius for being gay, but for being unfaithful.
He doesn't try to get under Ed's skin for being with a man, but for greiving a romance.
I think it's more misogyny than homophobia throughout. A hate of femininity.
What if the crew all sleep on the deck because someone has to be on watch during the night, but they all felt sad about leaving someone on the deck all alone so they started sleeping there together.
After years of being told that shows need to include SA scenes for realism, I'm not going to accept that this show is somehow more violent than expected. It's queer and that scares Zaslav and his billionaire friends because we can't be controlled by heteronormativity.
#SaveOFMD
Stede does also want excitement and to be cool and famous, but that's just surface level. He desires something about the Pirate's Life from a deeper place, which I would argue he's still figuring out. But he does know from the very beginning that the community aspect is important
Stede's whiteness is also central to his character, and his character journey involves becoming less oblivious to his privilege as a white man and settler.
Stede is becoming worthy of Ed bc he betrays his fellow white aristocrats, while Izzy allies himself with colonizers.
Izzy's whiteness is a central part of his character and why he's the villain/antagonist. He fetishizes Ed. He aligns himself with colonizers when he can no longer control Ed.
One thing that Our Flag Means Death showed me is that it's okay to care about things, even if they're cringe. It's okay to put effort into the things you care about, and into your community.

#RenewAsACrew
"The show seems to be a kind of refuge from the hellscape we're living in."
Well, David Jenkins has accurately explained at least part of the reason why the brain rot has sunk in for me. I used to consume news on Twitter but I am much happier obsessing over gay pirates.
Stede tries to use passive aggression on Doug, "I haven't heard much about you," but it doesn't work because Doug and Mary have a healthy and secure attachment.
@marsdetect
This is what I'm expecting. A couple weeks after their big merger finalizes, they kick off pride month with OFMD renewal and the fandom absolutely explodes
Just saw a tiktok that proposes that oxford comma loving ppl (like myself) are all neurodivergent because "it adds clarity to a sentence with very minimal effort" that not everyone will need, but some do. And that it's in line with ND styles of over communicating.
I love this.
@actofgays
Ed's a people pleaser and he's trying to diffuse Jack's bullying by acting like it's just a silly joke between friends. He knows better, but doesn't feel strong enough to stand up for Stede in this moment. Ed has a lot of growing to do.
