Unusual 80s & 90s toys. Usual Transformers of all eras. Sharing pictures of my ridiculously huge toy collection and thoughts from my ridiculously tiny brain
1/6 New pinned tweet! A selection of just some of my proudest toy collecting achievements, setups and collections. A whole wall of beautiful boxes! My very own Jurassic Park! A complete Western Transformers G1 collection! An almost complete Thundercats collection…
Transformers Class of 1984! Happy anniversary to this bunch of depressives, traitors, psychos, whiners, and whatever the hell Cliffjumper is. They may have personality problems but they were beautiful & founded a 40 year empire that is still going strong! Who was your favourite?
1/4 Presenting Transformers G1 (North America & Europe 1984-1993). A “complete” (everything released by Hasbro) run. This took 22 hours (!) to set up & put away again as it it is normally in storage. Every figure in the toy catalogues plus the mail-aways & significant variants
No, Ig *YOUR* anus!
Pretty sure Legacy Iguanus is another case of Hasbro using a discoloured figure as a colour reference as I used to own a sun-damaged Iggy that was *exactly* the same shade as Legacy. Still a super cool figure though!
1/2 Transformers Electric Train & Battle Set from Tyco! Wage a partially two dimensional trainspotting war with this fantastic set. Of course you’ll be too busy being brutally slaughtered by the 18 attacking Decepticons vs yout paltry 6 Autobots to take down any loco numbers but
Ulysses. Ulysses. Soaring through all the galaxies. In search of Earth & very probably flying into the night. Despite the toon being a hit the gorgeous but expensive Ulysses 31 line died a death in the UK but sold very well in continental Europe
Looking great in 88! Hasbro’s 1988 range was VAST with plenty of new and returning subgroups & gimmicks galore. This is probably my favourite year of G1, the sheer creativity & variety is amazing. Pretenders, Powermasters and Firecons - oh my! Who were your best bots of the year?
The mutant spawn of a drunken orgy between Megatron, Soundwave & Omega Supreme, Radio AM Robot was released as a Transformer in Argentina. Licensed from a company called Tai Fong it came in two colours, red & green like the original and blue which was unique to Transformers
In this 1990s Weetabix offer in exchange for 12 tokens & 20p they would send you Dragstrip or Fireflight (or a Sindy doll in her “prettiest lingerie” if you were so inclined) though at one point they ran short & apologetically sent out an “extra value alternative” - Jazz for 20p!
Looking mighty in 1990! The Action was alive, the toy line… not so much. The Action Masters are much maligned but they’re great & unfairly blamed for G1’s death (the real culprit was🥷 🐢 ). Other parts of the world also got the gold box Classics which I’ll cover another time…
Lights, camera, action! Welcome to futuristic space year 2005, brought to you in the retro Earth year 1986, where movie stars mingle with combiners galore, walking cities, & the long-delayed Reflector in the 3rd series of The Transformers! Who were your favourites & most wanted?
My current boxed & carded Super Naturals collection! Tonka *really* outdid themselves with the packaging design - utterly gorgeous! It’s looking good though still need to get a Dark Dragon box (ouch 💰) and I’ve decided to get the 6 main figures carded (less ouch but will add up)
1/3 I have a lot of toys but not a lot of space. The purpose of this account is to give my lazy ass an excuse to unpack my stuff once in a while to take some pictures. Occasionally I'll unpack a lot of stuff at once and take a big group pic. Here are some threaded together...
Transformers heaven in 87! The -master era kicks off in style with Hasbro’s gimmicktastic 1987 range. The flagship Headmasters & Targetmasters were joined by oddballs like the Clones, Duocons & a nearby Doublespy (…real nearby). Oh and FORTRESS MAXIMUS. Who were your favourites?
Watch yourself...
I’ve never understood why the bootleg Transformers watches were more prevalent than the genuine articles which didn’t seem very well distributed at all. Surely they would have sold like hot cakes if they were more widely available? The bootlegs certainly did
Looking fine in 89! Pretenders & Micromasters ruled in 1989. Due to declining sales there was a noticeable decrease in both size & complexity but there were still some incredible Transformers on offer. I have fond memories of collecting Micromasters this year. Who were your favs?
Transformers Soundwave Cassette Player! The greatest of all G1 merchandise! This is still sealed although the stickiness of the tape has perished to such an extent that a moderately powerful fart would probably change that
Autobots transform and get down! (you know time works in a funny way when the iPod speaker dock mode is somehow more outdated and useless than the freightliner truck mode)
Since Ghostbusters is trending here’s one of my absolute favourite collection items, something I’m ridiculously proud of - an original Kenner Ecto-Plazm countertop display box (along with my Ecto-Plazm & ghost collection). Proof of many ghostly encounters!
#Ghostbusters
Battle Beasts Shocking Shark Transport Station! Pretty sure it’s some sort of anglerfish, not a shark, but I guess something like Angry Anglerfish doesn’t sound quite as cool for the kids (I think anglerfish are cool though…). Looks remarkably like Transformers Splashdown
Transformers Tyco Electric Racing Car - Decepticon (single packed version). Named as “Freezon” by the commercial and later designated as a female by the Allspark Almanac (making her retroactively the 1st female TF) she is one of the vanishingly few glow-in-the-dark Transformers
Transformers lives on in 91! Whilst TFs took a rest in the US the fine folk at Hasbro UK (thanks Andy Couzens ❤️) gave a few other lucky countries a small but spectacular range of new Action Masters & slightly recoloured Japanese toys (+Classic reissues, more on them to come!)
🎶 Cos he’s still preoccupied, with 19, 19, 1985!🎶
The 2nd year of The Transformers brought some all-time greats & firm fan favourites to the table. Annoyingly several of the coolest bots were not officially released in the UK (alas poor Swoop). Who were your favourites?
Just realised that by fusing Huffer (an unpleasable pessimistic whiner) and Pipes (a hoarder and compulsive collector of old shit) Hasbro have inadvertently created - A TRANSFORMERS COLLECTOR! Oh the humanity… (… robotitty?)
Battle Beasts Wood Beetle Transport Station! Awesome insectiod battle tank transforms into the very latest in log cabin-chic fortresses! Seems a bit of a goof building your fortress out of wood when your enemies are fire users but you’re sorted if you meet watery foes
Nananananananana - Batrain! Despite decidedly knock-offish colours this Matsushiro Space Loco/Robot is an official port of the Takotoku Galactic Whirlwind Sasuraiger Batrain. Great toy who in a parallel universe might have made a decent Deluxe Autobot alongside Roadbuster & Whirl
1) Transformers Ladybird Action Frieze! An obscure entry in the Ladybird-verse this giant-size silent frieze comic (apparently that's a thing) tells the story of the Autobots going on a rip-roaring rampage of revenge when Laserbeak messes up Jazz's shoulder. Rhinokey for scale..
Welcome to the Fright Zone - trap-filled stronghold of terror! Can He-Man, Skeletor & the Masters of the Universe escape the dreadful dragon, the terrible tree, and the (honestly a bit ropey) rock monster? Probably!
Me when toy companies reveal new Ghostbusters toys that are yet another version of the film dudes and not on-model Classics-style Real Ghostbusters figures:
Transformers-branded Beast Formers Red Phoenix (aka Battle Beasts Blazing Eagle) playset! Super cool transforming vehicle/base that really shows off the shared Transformers/Battle Beasts DNA. Gorgeous box art too
Get away from her you BITCH! - it’s the Kenner Aliens Power Loader! Substantially more heavily armed than its movie counterpart for a more combat-orientated role. It also has caterpillar tracks instead of stompy legs which isn’t quite as cool but does reduce the parts count
Shaking my head at all these newly announced Mattel toy property movies with wafer thin premises/no stories when Mighty Max is RIGHT THERE. You’re going with Christmas Balloon over this?
Tragically cancelled - Inhumanoids Gagoyle! In the show the stomach was a clear window which allowed the victim to be seen inside, an EXTREMELY toyetic touch that leads me to think the final toy would have had that feature. Looks uncannily like The Real Ghostbusters H2 Ghost.
I’m absolutely loving this nail polish rack I’ve bought. Not only is it perfect for Action Masters but it works beautifully with Gobots too! The lipped basket-like shelves prevent tumbles and it is just the right size. If I actually had display cabinets I’d be buying 100 more!
Gobots Defendor! (Short cannon, no hatch variant). Such a nifty lil bot and one of the very few Gobots with a hand weapon (and WHAT a hand weapon at that!). Zodiac Toys were selling their imported Super Gobots at an absolute steal!
Mighty Max Escapes From Skull Dungeon! The quintessential Doom Zone. The card really sells it with the layout, beautiful art & minicomic. The Bluebird release called the creator of Smasher “Dr Death” whilst Mattel called him “Dr Gore” (one of the few Mattel changes I prefer)
My best of 2022 part 4 - The Wall! Building an entire Toys R Us-esque wall out of just some of the 80s and 90s toy boxes from my collection was a lot of fun though also a bit daunting. Who needs windows anyway?
500 followers! Thanks all! As promised here’s a previously unseen unreleased toy - chromed Mighty Max Skull Dungeon! How sexy is this? Bluebird planned to release a series of chromed sets (the Horror Heads have surfaced before). The jaw & interior did exist but I don’t own them
Talking Skull Robot! A (much) bigger brother to the Maruka Magic Robo heads. This awesome bot transforms from a creepy talking skull with lenticular eyes to an enormous wonderfully doofy robot
Masters of the Universe Alma Individually Wrapped Jelly Pieces countertop display box. Absolutely gorgeous Castle Grayskull art and the sweets were pretty nice too
Schoolbot! Take the robot back to school! No mention of Macross or Robotech but the toy/complete desktop stationery experience seems to be licensed. I like how it prioritises the flimsy educational aspect by labelling the modes “Pencil Robot” “Eraser Robot” & “Sharpener Robot”
@SixoTF
As I often note the effect of 07 was more akin to a millionaire becoming a billionaire. People forget just how successful the Unicron Trilogy was & that we had already had the best part of a decade of the nostalgia boom, Masterpiece, reissues, Alternators/Binaltech, Dreamwave/IDW
“Mom, can I get Bumblebee?”
“No, you have Bumblebee at home”
Bumblebee at home:
…Robot Racer Surf-Finder! I wonder how many thousands of kids used him as their Bumblebee?
Monster in My Pocket Monster Mountain! This awesome yet impractical display stand could hold all 48 series 1 MiMPs & came with a poster to take up even more of your wall space. If you were so inclined you could keep buying them to display further series but would soon get pricey
1/8 A BIG look at the Kenner Jurassic Park I set up in the garden last year. I’ve posted a few of these before but how about taking the grand tour? Buckle up as I’ve spared no expense…
You could never accuse the Gobots line of lacking bravery. Transformers never had the sheer brass balls to strap helicopter blades & laser cannons to the top of an F-4 Phantom & call it an alt mode. Looking cool with a clever transformation Raizor is an under-appreciated badass
1/4 “The Thundercats - they’re loose!” Being as I am both a massive Thundercats ho & a toy hoarder is it any surprise that I’ve got a veritable litter tray full of Thundercats? Here’s my almost full LJN figure run (missing Tongue-A-Saurus as I lovingly nurture a delusion that...
Crash Dummies Junkbot Wrecker! The Junkbots were a bizarre addition to an already weird line & I adore them. A deranged Borg-ified former dummy building a Mad Max car then stealing the severed limbs of fallen dummies to build an army to wage war against safety itself? Yes please!
Masters of the Universe Monogram Talon Fighter! This striking Talon Fighter kit looks more dynamic than Mattel’s & has working flapping wings. Mine came with a free gift - a *massive* dead 80s spider shrink-wrapped in with the body halves (obviously a fiendish plot by Webstor)
Sometimes I think about the cancelled 2nd series of Playmates Earthworm Jim and it makes me sad. I harbour ambitions of customising a Turtles Pizza Thrower into a Worm Thrower. One day…
@LegoLostAtSea
It's Super Fright Features Egon from the Kenner Real Ghostbusters line. Looking a bit more frightened than usual after over 30 years at sea!
Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles Foot Cruiser! Shredder’s GORGEOUS ride was my favourite Turtles vehicle when I was a kid. Fairly obviously based on a Neutrino Starcruiser (+ a dash of Back to the Future for the transformation) it’s a shame Playmates never recoloured it for the heroes
The Secret Wars have begun! Can the villains repel the heroic force’s attack on The Tower of Doom before Doctor Doom’s chest tampos wear off? Probably not! Cap is caught in a trap! Can Wolverine free him before it is too late? Probably bub!
Kenner Aliens Pop-Up 3D Action Space Base! Here’s the final complete base all put together. The zones form a Hadley’s Hope diorama which is impressively large & absolutely gorgeous. Interestingly Zones 1 & 6 both have tabs to attach more parts (maybe just to allow customisation)
