@AuthorGFAllen When I’m thinking about a story it’s often visual, but when I’m writing, I’m considering my prose, the rhythm of the language. A million other things. Honestly. I try not to analyze what’s going on in my mind too much. Better to keep it a mystery.

Then came the dreaded task of writing a synopsis that wouldn’t turn people away. I couldn’t avoid saying what the book was about, and I couldn’t soften the premise with a lot of wingeing like I’m doing now. I just had to do my best.

But I’ve always been an animal lover, so I wrote it from the perspective of my protagonists, who are trying to save the pets in Kernsville, Maryland. I wanted to write a heartfelt boy and his dog story for our demented modern world. I think I succeeded.

But the idea behind Stone Ribs was too strong to ignore. Many serial killers started by killing animals, and I thought—that would make a compelling story. That’s where this book began.

A few years ago, I read The Sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea by Yukio Mishima. There’s a scene of animal cruelty that made me go all pale and swimmy on the subway. It was only a few pages long, but it took me the entire ride to get through.

When I was writing Stone Ribs, I knew it would be a hard book to sell. A psychopath hunting humans? No problem. But a pre-serial killer murdering pets? That’s a bridge too far. I get it. Even as the author, I feel the same way.

Curious why it’s called Flat Diet Coke? You’ll have to listen to find out.
