I've never seen a Catholic pray TO a statue or painting or whatever the Hell. They pray to Jesus, not the image of Jesus. The image being there is irrelevant if they aren't praying directly to it. I wear a cross necklace and I've made a habit of holding it when I pray. I'm not praying to the necklace, it's just there. Hope that makes sense and I didn't just word salad.
