Even more reason then to actually build the ships in Finland. And Finland has a formidable ship-building capability beyond that of just icebreakers. And, I note the predictable contribution to the acquisition from the Quebec (& indirectly the Canadian) government (ala Bombardier's C-Series). But Quebec superbly epitomizes a culture of mega-grift ... one that goes all the way back to Montreal's 'Big O'.

But Canada could additonally acquire the very capable Swedish Gripen ... accelerate our icebreaker program with Finland ... and pursue a nuclear submarine program with the UK which could see (immediately) British subs patrolling the Canadian Arctic.

I believe the F35s are standardized for interoperability across @NATO ... which is why most of our allies selected that aircraft. And Canada's new frigates are based on the British Type 26 design. But, unfortunately, defence has been viewed much more as a vehicle for distributing political pork vs. urgently responding to emerging aggression.

I agree. Short term pain for long term gain. And if that doesn't get his attention, closing Canadian airspace to US commercial aircraft will at least get the attention of a broader swath of the American public. Then pull out of NORAD. The works. We can't just stand here and take a nut-kicking from that asshole.
