Loyalty is a fine thing Nadine Dorries but Mr Johnson was not removed by ‘a coup’. He was forced to resign when too many of his Ministers and backbenchers like myself made it plain that we were no longer prepared to tolerate his casual relationship with the truth.

We need to remember that Mr Johnson is still under investigation by the Privileges Committee for potentially misleading the House. Until that investigation is complete and he is found guilty or cleared, there should be no possibility of him returning to Government.

David and I entered the House together in 1983 and I regard him as a dear friend and a brave & compassionate MP. The loss to his family, who David always put first, and to the House is appalling. But David died doing what David always did - looking after his constituents.

Today marks 39 years of being the Member of Parliament for North Thanet. A job that brings reward and frustration everyday. A lot has changed during my time but I thrive on the challenge to adapt. And there is more still to achieve for my constituents and the country.

.@PennyMordaunt is the last ‘insurgent’ candidate. I believe she is honest, has integrity and will bring the Country together, that’s why I am backing her. #PM4PM #PutPennyOnTheBallot

Having made my position clear I believe that we should if possible afford Ms Gray the courtesy of allowing her to conclude & present her report of her investigations into allegations of improper 'party' events in Downing Street before instigating further action if appropriate 2/3.
