Here's the final cover of my book - Riding Out - published April 21st 2022. This week, proof copies are going out to book shops and my kind friends who will read it first.
3,427 miles, from Shetland to Scilly, and back again.
A journey of love, loss and new beginnings.
Ride complete.
4,373 miles cycled in ten weeks from Cape Flattery, WA to Key West, FL.
Hundreds of interviews with people in 11 states, about many of the biggest issues facing the USA ahead of next year's election.

It’s 0545 and I’m going to try and get to Land’s End! My bike is broken, I feel broken, and now my phone has decided to stop charging! So no maps - I’ll just have to follow my compass southwest and hope for the best.🤦🏻♂️One final push. 10 hours until sunset.

The past six months have left me feeling lethargic and frustrated. So I've come up with my next big adventure. On October 7th I'm setting off on a 1,500 mile solo cycling and camping expedition. The true UK end-to-end. Northernmost point of Shetland to southernmost Jersey.
**PUBLICATION DAY**
#RidingOut
is now on shelves, in actual book shops! 🤩
It’s about my 3,427 mile journey around pandemic Britain and a discussion about mental health, grief and finding ways through tough times in life.
I hope you enjoy it.

I'm excited - and nervous - to reveal that my first book, Riding Out, will be published in Spring 2022.
It's about a 3,427-mile bike ride around Britain at one of the toughest periods in its history.
It's also a very personal journey through loss, love and anxiety.

Day 6,

to Skara Brae. Strong north easterly winds, but a great night’s camping on the west coast at Skail Bay.

Congratulations to the whole team behind this. Makes all those soggy nights in tents and faffing around with damp cameras and smashed drones worth it. Night on the beers ASAP. Sorry to break this to you, but I've got ideas for the next couple of series...
In this Saturday’s
@timestravel
you can read about how I walked the length of Shetland. 90 miles from south to north, along a proposed new walking route. In the meantime, however, you can watch the film. Thanks to

Today I unleashed my inner Forest Gump. But instead of running, and running, I kept cycling, and cycling. Through all weathers in Montana. 12 hours: 90 miles. Biggest day so far. Got some great interviews for the book, too. 🚴 🇺🇸

Chuffed to see I'm up for four awards at this year's
@TravWriters
end of year bash on Sunday, including Broadcaster of the Year and the narrative book award for Riding Out. Thanks to all the editors and cinematographers for your help in 2022.
It’s paperback publication day!
Three months earlier than planned, because the hardback sold out.
Riding Out has also just been sold in China, taking current global sales to 8,000+ 😃
News on book 2 in the next few weeks… 🚴 🇺🇸
Last night I stayed in one of the 72 Hour Cabins in
@visitsweden
- a place of utter calm, surrounded by nature. A good spot for midnight fishing and drinking beers. The sun only set for a few hours. This video was shot at 11pm! 🇸🇪
Cheerio, Shetland. I've had a marvellous time - and I'll be back again. I've got a few more islands to see, and people to catch up with. If you don't fancy cycling the length of Britain, then this section would make a wonderful standalone week's hols. Now, onto Orkney.
I’m on
#Foula
,
#Shetland

- staying with the island’s 30 human inhabitants, a few hundred sheep and dive bombing Skuas! A truly epic place. To the north, nothing until the North Pole! This is GB’s “most remote, inhabited island.”

Exactly 2 years ago today I started a bonkers project. A journey that would take me 3,427 miles around Britain. It became a regular

column, a
@Summersdale
book and a UK theatre tour. Time flies when you're having fun! Soon to get started on the next crazy idea...
What a day! And what a week! And a milestone to celebrate: 1,000 miles completed. About a quarter of the way to Key West, Florida.
Montana is spectacular. 80 miles today and I think my favourite day so far. Tomorrow I’m taking a much needed day off.
I’ll be back Monday. ✌️
Before the pandemic,I’d managed an anxiety disorder for a decade, but the past year has been very tough at times. In today’s

Day 27,
#BritainByBike
, Bristol to Tiverton, 87 miles. I’m a filthy mess, and fell off today in Taunton. Pushed it hard until after dark but found a warm B&B. Tough out here. That’s 1,163 miles on the clock. Early start tomorrow - looks ☀️ but ❄️. Almost there.
The final day of

. 35 miles done. Roughly 25 to go. When I left here 9 months ago it was grim. Today I have a tailwind and sunshine. Hoping to reach The Flugga about 3pm.
Proud to hear that Earth Cycle - the five-part TV series that sees me cycle 2,000 miles the length of Scandinavia - and has been broadcast in 20+ countries, has made it onto the Broadcast Programme of the year category shortlist in the

Very sparse out here. Struggling to reach regular towns for food and water. But good copy for the book. Having to rack up some 90-100 mile days this week, 10-12 hour rides. 😬
#BritainByBike
, Day 30, Blyth to Bamburgh, 53 miles. Stunning coastline. Amazing people. Tailwind. Tonight I’m resting my head in the grounds of Bamburgh Castle, overlooking the cricket pitch. Tomorrow I’ll head into Scotland. Loving this trip!

Home for the night. The 72 Hour Glass Cabins. Known to reduce stress by 70% in just three days. Hoping for 23.333333 in the single day and night I’m here.

, Day 40, St Margaret’s Hope to Kirkwall, 18 miles. I thought I was winding down, but the headwind today was the worst I’ve faced so far. I limped along at 4mph. Tomorrow I’ll rest and write, before catching the overnight ferry to Shetland.

A dream realised. In the dark days of lockdown I wandered past

Britain by Bike, Twitter Q&A. I've received hundreds of questions during the past month that I've not had time to respond to. About kit, route, why, how, who.
Sorry if I've missed you. But I have a long train journey today. Add them to this thread. I'll start with some FAQs:

, Day 42, Lerwick to Hillswick, 36 miles. My penultimate day on this journey. I’m now just 60 miles from The Flugga - the top of Britain. I love Shetland, it feels surreal to be back. I never knew that I’d go full circle.

I’ve been asked to go “wild swimming” about a dozen times on this trip. Every time I’ve chickened out. Today I’ve finally taken the plunge in Lerwick. I made it to my shoulders for about 10 seconds. I call it wild wading. 🥶 🧊 ❄️ ⛄️

Two years ago today I was sat in Shetland, having completed my 3,500 mile 🚲 journey around Britain.
That trip became Riding Out, my first book! Thank you to everyone who has bought a copy.
Tomorrow I’ll have news on BOOK TWO!
I set off in late August…
It's time for me to switch everything off and focus solely on writing. Back in a few months. Thank you to everyone who encouraged me across the USA, and apologies for not responding to all the messages I've received. Happy holidays, happy new year, see you on the other side.
Looks nice, but a stiff headwind and never ending hills. After yesterday off, today is turning into an arduous slog. 😥 Montana is beautiful but a pain to navigate by bicycle.
Just got tracked down by Russ and his mates. He’s been following my journey via Twitter. Nice to know someone is tuned in!

Sunset, on the banks of the Zambezi. A much needed day to rest and write after covering 1,000+ KM in the past two weeks via boats, 4x4s and small planes. Tomorrow: Victoria Falls and Zimbabwe.
Thank you, Scotland. After 726 miles, that's a wrap. Time to enter England. I think I must be about half way to the Isles of Scilly by now? I've met fishermen, musicians and astronomers, plus a whole bunch more. My next

Ok, so now I’m really tapering off. Was going well today, so decided to keep going to the place I was hoping to reach tomorrow. Buying myself another day off. I’m now on the south side of Miami and just 156 miles from Key West!? I’m going to really enjoy this week.
In less than three weeks' time I head to the US, to start work on my next book, Fractured States.
For 10 weeks I'll be CYCLING from Cape Flattery to Key West.
Well, that's the plan, at least.
As the US gears up to the 2024 election, I'm heading off to find the REAL America.
This week I’ve been cycling around Germany’s Black Forest, researching a story. It’s been chilly! But have found plenty of hearty food and booze to keep me warm. I’m now beginning a 12 hour train journey home, which should be rather lovely, then it’s two weeks in England! 😃
As a restless teenager, I’d spend hours studying maps - searching for tiny spots of land in great oceans and remote corners of our planet. Today I head for Saint Helena - somewhere I’ve daydreamed about for 20 years!

This spring, summer and autumn I'll be visiting theatres and festivals all over Britain to talk about my 3,500 mile journey during the pandemic.
Hopefully there's a venue nearby.
