these results are in contrast to most model-based studies that find that marine litter mostly originates from land-based sources. This new level of understanding is important, as mitigation strategies should reflect the composition and source of plastic litter in a region (4/4)

The implication is that land-based sources of positively buoyant microplastic transported by rivers will likely settle and accumulate in the estuarine environment and thereby increase the concentration of microplastic in the seabed.
