ESKOM SCANDAL: R180M IN BRIBES A new investigation into procurement fraud at Eskom has revealed that R180-million in kickbacks were given to corrupt employees through "low-value" contracts. These informal contracts, valued at up to R1-million, have less oversight, making them prone to misuse. The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) found that over 35 Eskom employees received these kickbacks from 45 vendors at 15 power stations, including Kusile and Duvha. Many purchase orders were created late at night to evade scrutiny. The SIU has made numerous referrals for disciplinary actions and prosecutions, while the implicated suppliers have been barred from future work with Eskom.
