My advice to rising grad students: if you have a choice between doing a task now or tomorrow, do it now. Seriously, even if you 99% don't want to.
I've never once regretted doing something ahead of time, but I've definitely regretted not doing it. 🤷♀️

The next speaker had to take a few minutes to address his points before starting her prepared presentation, and to her credit she handled it with incredible professionalism and consideration. But the whole audience is visibly shocked.

To the critical-speaker's credit, his points on non-rigorous experimental design and confounds for reproducibility are fair ones, IMO. I mean that. But the execution felt, to me as an audience member, unnecessarily harsh.
Has anyone else experienced this?

As a PhD student, one of the most challenging things about self-marketing is recognizing your own greatness. When you work among truly phenomenal young people, it's easy to feel average or inadequate. The bar we set for "normal" is so high.

Please don't just read about circumstances like this and scroll past, passively disgusted, because YOU would never. This is all too common & it is fostered by environment. Speak up. Speak LOUD. Hold your colleagues accountable because these are not isolated events.
I was disrespected by another professor today.
It’s taking time to process exactly why I felt so upset. (And if you’re wondering, yes he was)
Perhaps it was the attitude he caught when I told him that we had the room booked, while my students were actively meeting in said room

Last April was a frenzy for me. Over 5 weeks time, I'd submit an F32 proposal to

, defend my dissertation, move from NY -> TX, and begin my postdoc. In hindsight, it was overly ambitious, but I've felt proud of myself.

Two weeks ago, I blocked the account of "The Science Femme" after the user called me sexist.
Today, it's revealed this "WOC in STEM" is in fact a white, male professor.
I'm repulsed by the manipulative, unethical behavior by "academics" on Twitter this year.
NEW: UNH professor Craig Chapman has been exposed for pretending to be a woman of color on Twitter.
Not only did he post tweets claiming to take credit for removing "woke" language from dept literature but he posted illicit pics of the unidentified woman

It's holding all academics to the standard of one who is always in a work mentality. Self-care is a "luxury" and can be perceived as a lack of dedication.
