100 students and local electeds have gathered in front of Iowa City High School to protest anti-LGBTQ legislation in Iowa

A protest in support of Palestine blocked the Stonewall Columbus March. They just moved off peacefully and the parade is resuming
Poignant reminder from drag queen Virginia West who is hosting:
“Pride started as a protest ladies and gentleman. It will always be a protest”
This is the last and nerdiest thing I'm going to post about this data.
These are the counties with the 10 largest increases in their share of the overall early vote.
This shows well where people are voting early more often than what I think is the last most comparable election.
At the Iowa City Public Library for the

Police have arrested well over two dozen people so far. Here’s a picture of the sheer amount of people still here. Ton more behind me not in the circle
A moment ago, police tried rushing to grab a man with a keffiyeh draped around his head. The man kept antagonizing police. He ran off and was not caught
There wasn’t an insurrection at the Iowa Capitol. They didn’t “storm” it either
Building is open to the public and they had a permit. They went in and protested. Similar protests have been reported on numerous times by

The Iowa City based

Action group is marching through the South District from Wetherby Park to the Diversity Market at Pepperwood Plaza
The ~100 person crowd spent about an hour at the park giving speeches and discussing gun violence in the U.S.
When I think about incredible women and girls in STEM, I think about young Black women like Dasia Taylor. A freshman at University of Iowa, Dasia is already changing the science field. Let’s continue to uplift our girls in STEM.
Where were Columbus Police at recent pro-Palestine protests at OSU? Well, it turns out they declined to assist OSUPD
CPD even has a specially-trained protest dialogue unit the city spent $94K to train. They weren't there either
Here's what I found out:
🚨🚨 Excited to announce I’m starting a new position with the

I’m really excited to take this next step in my career covering government in a more focused beat starting Monday!!
Probably about 400 people here, most with their children. The Drag Queens and Kings are leading the crowd in songs and reading from a book called “We are the Rainbow”
The kids are participating and taking little notice of the protestors, who are just here silently
My father George Shillcock Jr. passed away Wednesday very suddenly at 60 years old. It's been a shock to my family and I. I'm back in Cincinnati with them and have been here since Wednesday evening
I'm taking this week off to be with my mom and sister here
I’m at World Class Industries in Hiawatha where fmr. U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley is campaigning with several Iowa Republican candidates including Gov. Kim Reynolds and U.S. Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks. The event is kicking off with
A clip of what a Drag Queen Storytime is usually like: drag queen and LGBTQ themed children’s songs and books
ICPL has held these events for years and the drag queens and kings here today are usually the ones who do these
An old photo of the Press-Citizen we found in our office that (I think) is from the 1990s or early 2000s
We have 4 people now
Had 6 at one point while I was here when we had also had an education reporter, editor and intern
I was honored tonight to be awarded the Harrison “Skip” Weber Investigative reporting award from Iowa Newspaper Association for my reporting on Moxie Solar

The formal approval of the county budget comes at a later date
It’s official! I’ve been at the

Here’s a thread 🧵 of some of my best work (imo):
She told me it is a shame that people have attitudes like this towards Drag Queens and the LGBTQ+ community, but wasn't surprised people showed up to protest
She said she would definitely come again and bring her grandkids
Petition for an annual journalism award for best journalist’s pet cat. I’m confident Samwise has a chance but there’s some steep competition out there, especially in Iowa
A couple days ago my grandmother passed away after a brief battle with COVID-19
Nana immigrated from Cuba in the 1960s with my mother and family to make a life here. I last saw her in November when my mother and I visited her in NJ (1st photo)
I’ll miss you so much Nana 💔
I’m very excited to announce that I’m starting my career as a journalist at

covering Indianola and Warren County Iowa!
Working at such a stellar newspaper for my first job is a dream come true!
Have any tips or advice for living in Central Iowa? Lmk ⤵️
Van de Camp said she doesn't try to hate anybody and while these people's actions and feelings may affect her for a moment, she gets to move on and live her life
"Hate gives people too much power over me"
"I refuse to let fear rule my life"
Voter turnout in Johnson County among its 87,776 registered voters now sits at 21.88% (19,205 voters)!
I did some digging through past primaries held in midterm years... This was the highest turnout year in Johnson Co. for a midterm election year primary in the 21st Century!

candidate Christina Bohannan speaking now at Big Grove Brewery in Iowa City. “All the votes are not yet counted… but here’s what I’ll tell you. I’ll accept the results of this election. Whatever they are. Because in a democracy that’s what we do.”
Belle told me she gets nervous for the kids because she thinks the protests bring a certain level of hate with them to these events when they are supposed to be having fun with kids
"Especially when I bring my own child here, I feel a little unsafe," she said.
I came here today because it’s the first Drag Storytime at ICPL since October when local Republicans showed up to protest a Halloween themed event, right before the election. Parents were upset with the protestors that day but the event went on
Won't be doing a story today but here's some things I talked with attendees about:
Denice Connell of Iowa City was there with her two grandkids and husband. She said they generally enjoyed the performance and it was their first time there

Pieper Lewis, a 17-year-old from Des Moines, was sentenced to five years probation and deferred judgement after she killed her alleged rapist.
@Philip_Joens
and
@DMRegister
has been doing a great job covering this trial today and the lead up to it:
Wow. Porter sentenced Pieper Lewis to five years probation. She must stay at the Fresh Start Women's Center in Des Moines during that time, complete 200 hours of community service for three years, plus 600 more hours of comm. service to pay off $4,000 plus in fines.
She was scared when Senate File 348, a bill banning minors from attending drag performances, was introduced
"I was so scared we were going to lose story times and Pride"
She said she is heartened to see how much support is in the community for these events, especially Iowa City
P-C SIGN OFF - As I walked to work this a.m., I caught the P-C sign coming off of its perch on N. Linn St.
I reported previously that Gannett ended the office leases for the Iowa City Press-Citizen and Ames Tribune. Both papers continue to publish w/ reporters working remote.
Just took a walk around town. At least 20 Iowa City businesses in the downtown area have signs indicating they will l/are already closing early due to the coming storm. Sorry for my bad handwriting
I also spoke with both drag queens who were at the event, Kalliope Belle and Valencia Van de Camp. Besides protestors, both told me it was a typical story time event but with a record crowd
So today is my final day as a
@DispatchAlerts
intern. Living in Columbus and working for this amazing paper is an experience I won’t soon forget as I move into my first full time job.
I want to say thanks to everyone below who helped guide me this summer

The Johnson County Board of Supervisors just declared March 31 as Transgender Day of Visibility and a crowd of speakers from around JoCo spoke just now
This is a net improvement for Harrison. When I was living there 2009-2019 people wouldn’t bat an eye at this disgraceful flag
I support clowning the losers who put these up 1000%

Don’t get me wrong here, I love Peacemaker and a lot of other stuff you do AND I hope you keep following and enjoy my very niche content about Iowa City news…
but can I ask… why???
I'm so excited to be here in Iowa. If my first month has taught me anything, it's that Indianola and Warren County will definitely be a great beat to cover

Darrel, I'm so sorry to hear this. You were an amazing editor during my internship at the Dispatch and you're an even better journalist.
Copy and pasting a press release without any effort to provide a more complex, fair, narrative on stories of public safety and law enforcement isn’t what reporting the news should be like
“Breaking news” shouldn’t have to compromise quality journalism and fairness. Do better

Still remember how their most prominent campaign strategy for Athens was to drag Elizabeth Warren around to call Cordray “a nerd” repeatedly in front of a bunch of college students

Was wondering if anyone would bring this up. It was pretty gross to watch. A 6th grader was shot and killed and this is all national reporters in Iowa can think about
We got one question with the governor at the 3 p.m. press conference and a national reporter used it to ask her how should the caucus candidates respond to the shooting...
I spoke with Lee County Sheriff Stacy Weber this week about the 45% raise he is set to receive in July due to a provision in the “Back the Blue” law. Turns out many other counties in Iowa are facing similar decisions to comply with the law passed June 2021
