Fascinating!
Fell down a rabbit hole this afternoon reading about the Territory of Guangzhouwan or Territoire de Kouang-Tchéou-Wan, a French territory "leased" from China on the Leizhou penisula about 400 km South-west of Hong Kong. It never rivalled strategic or economic importance of HK.
