exactly. additionally, Black (and other non-white) characters are often disposed of, usually in a sacrifice of sorts, in order to save the white character(s), or so the white character(s) can progress in the story or ultimately triumph in the end.
It's worth noting that black characters in traditional horror often are the most practical minded about the situation and typically die due to the mistakes of others. Though the white lens tends to view it as a cowardice penalty we tend to see it as misplaced punishment.
