#ShellFoundation and @Accion, together with @BFAGlobal and @UpayaSV, have launched a new programme to accelerate the adoption of clean energy solutions in low-income communities in #India and sub-Saharan #Africa. The Climate and Finance Innovations (#ClimaFii) Alliance will provide catalytic support to climate enterprises and financial service providers to bridge the gap between #EnergyAccess and financial inclusion for microenterprises across the regions. Accion will work with financial service providers to design affordable financial products that enable micro​-​entrepreneurs to access climate solutions. BFA Global and Upaya Social Ventures will support climate enterprises in sub-Saharan Africa and India, respectively, to design and develop emission-reducing technologies specifically to benefit small business owners. A pilot group of dairy farmers across three counties in Kenya have been testing the impact of solar refrigeration on reducing waste and milk spoilage. The three-month pilot saw 20 farmers using @Sure_Chill's solar-powered fridge, which created reductions in product loss and increases in farm productivity and income. Farmers in the dairy industry, 40% of which are women, face several critical issues: 🔹High product loss at the farm gate: 290 million litres of milk were lost at the farm gate in #Kenya in 2023. 🔹Quality issues: Use of preservatives, mixing with water, and improper storage lead to compromised milk quality and rejection by value chain partners. 🔹Value chain inefficiencies: inconsistent supply and quality create power imbalances and price uncertainties for farmers. The pilot reported positive impacts including less spoilage, more sales, and increased productivity and income. Farmers saw a 123% increase in daily operating profit and a 6.2% decrease of milk spoilage. The pilot was run by SureChill, who #ShellFoundation has supported since 2020 to expand into the domestic and small business sectors. The Covid-19 Response Programme for Agri-transition in #India was established in 2021 to connect #SmallholderFarmers with essential finance and resources. In its second annual impact report it has demonstrated a sharp intake in the number and size of loans reaching farmers, 600,000 reached, with outsized reach to female farmers. The eight-year Response Programme was established through collaboration between Rabo Foundation, @IKEAFoundation, @DFCgov, and #ShellFoundation, with co-funding from the UK government through our catalysing agriculture partnership. Increasing the incomes of smallholder farmers living in poverty is a critical pillar of Shell Foundation’s strategy and customer focus. GreenPod Labs is a pioneering biotech firm, and the award recognises their active packaging technology designed to mitigate post-harvest losses in fruits and vegetables. This active packaging technology extends shelf life at ambient temperatures, thus eliminating the need for costly cold storage and potentially revolutionising the preservation of fresh produce in resource-limited settings. The technology adds significant value for smallholder farmers by helping them minimise post-harvest losses during storage and transport at ambient temperatures. Globally, one-third of food is lost or wasted, causing substantial economic losses and worsening greenhouse gas emissions. This is a particular challenge for smallholder farmers in emerging markets, who bear a disproportionate share of the burden. Yet, new breakthrough technologies designed to combat post-harvest losses hold promise for both boosting these farmers’ incomes and significantly reducing global food waste. At the Mastercard MADE launch event, #ShellFoundation’s Head of Smallholder Farmers Portfolio Meera Shah joined partners from @Mastercard, @AfDB_Group, @Microsoft, @Heifer, @DFCgov and others discussed investing in the digital economy in #Africa with Mastercard’s EVP and Community Pass Founder Tara Nathan. Digital inclusion is a pre-cursor to economic inclusion. In 2024 we launched the ‘Harvesting Green Energy for Smallholder Farmers’ initiative in partnership with Mastercard and the @Coopbankenya, which introduces clean energy solutions for smallholder farmers – a critical target beneficiary group for Shell Foundation – onto Mastercard’s Farm Pass platform as well as affordable financing from the Co-Operative Bank of Kenya. Shell Foundation provided a grant subsidy to the programme to reduce interest rates for smallholder farmers, and is co-managing the piloting of six income-generating energy assets, which increase farmers’ productivity and when combined with market access enables better loan repayment. Shell Foundation’s contribution was co-funded with UK aid from the UK Government via the Catalysing Agriculture partnership between Shell Foundation and the UK’s @FCDOGovUK.
