Our Nursery Herd head back to their bedrooms shortly after 5pm, where bottles of milk await them. With a full tummy, the youngest elephants often waste little time clambering onto a mattress to fall asleep. With a Keeper close by to tuck them in with a blanket! #SweetDreams

Big news in a perfect package!. Sunday 1st September began with the most beautiful surprise in Tsavo, when wild-living orphan Loijuk returned to our Ithumba stockades in the early hours to share with us her pride and joy - a newborn female calf whom we have named Lili.

Baby elephant treatment: Set upon by lions & suffering from septic bite wounds, emergency in-the-field care yesterday kept this young family together. Step one involved mobilising mum & baby, so the SWT/KWS Tsavo Vet Unit could treat the tiny victim. Next step. ⬇️

Hello from Raha! She’s starting to show real pluck… one day chasing away a warthog who had the unbridled nerve to approach her from behind – a sore point for this brave girl who narrowly survived a predator attack before her rescue, causing catastrophic injuries to her rear end.

An urgent call came in: 3 elephants were stuck in a deep & steep-sided dam, escape was impossible – without help! Teams from the SWT and KWS responded, and Wildlife Works loaned a backhoe, which we drove to the scene on our flatbed truck. After hours of digging, all 3 elephants

Elephants are tactile and this is especially important for infant calves. In the wild, these little ones would be coddled by family members, with trunks hugs and caresses. At our Nursery, the Keepers replicate this closeness, providing comfort and reassurance through touch.

Weighing in at 478 grams - that’s just over a pound – when she was rescued, Tickey is a truly tiny dik-dik who has joined our Kaluku orphan herd. 3 weeks on & a few grams heavier given her love of milk, Tickey is thriving!
