@jeffphilips1 Jeff, you have created your own definition of GDP. Are you saying our GDP changed only because the currency was floated? You still haven't answered the question....what happened between 2015 till date please? I'm glad you spoke about 1999-2007, when we GDP growth was record high.

@SamAmadi As a TV analyst, you should get your facts right. There are millions of Palestinians living in Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Egypt & other Arab countries as a result of being purged during the decades of conflict. If they hated them, why would they host them, feed them & give them jobs?

This is shocking! When will the govt understand that customs is not supposed to be a main revenue generation source itself, rather it is mainly to facilitate trade? And at the point it stops focusing on facilitating trade, naturally trade itself will suffer & so will the economy.
With our annual imports estimated at N71 trillion, the new 4% customs administration charge on Free On Board (FOB) value will come to N2.84 trillion. Does this mean that the Customs Service requires an additional N2.84 trillion annually to do its job? Don't forget they already have a budget and get an incentive percentage on total customs duties collected. Now, they want to spend more than $1.5 billion on running costs in a country with the poverty index we have and with many businesses closing down. Importers will inevitably pass these costs on to consumers, further straining the budgets of millions of struggling households. This new fee of 4% is not even restricted to luxury goods but across all imports, so even for industries that import their raw materials whose duties are only 5%, the customs agency will now charge importers an extra 80% of the duty amount as administrative fees! How can this make sense or support the government's policy of promoting the ease of doing business? The government must urgently reconsider this policy and put it on hold immediately. Especially not now with what Nigerians are going through.

This is absolutely NOT what we should be advocating for. We need to move far away from leaders with sectional mindsets as they usually perform poorly. Until we understand that for any of us to progress, all of us must progress, we won't be going anywhere as a country.
Arewa is learning a lot of lessons under this administration. The north is learning the importance of using your tenure in power to develop your region and enhance its future. Hopefully,when next a northerner emerges as President, he’d learn from past happenings and not pretend.
