We want our pupils to thrive academically, creatively and socially. We pride ourselves on our relationships with parents and use Twitter to help achieve this.
Mrs Athorn is delighted to have been nominated for a Barnsley Spirit Award in recognition for the work she did during Covid 19. She has said she is accepting on behalf of the whole school team as it was such a team effort.
What a proud day to work at Shawlands ! 3 full car loads of food to the food bank and a cheque for £7716 handed to the hospice. Thank you to all our amazing families ❤️
I work in the best school!!! Arrived at school to find this waiting, and enjoyed an amazing assembly with every class and the office performing my poems!!! Amazing. Thank you Mrs Athorn for arranging it all and thanks to the performers!!
You might have seen that we are in the Chronicle today with a story about the amazing amount raised for the Barnsley Hospice. Tonight I received a letter by email from Dan Jarvis, congratulating us on our achievements. A snippet is included here.
Can I say a massive thanks to all the staff who have made today a lovely one for the children even though many have their own private worries and concerns, the staff who have covered classes without fail and Mrs Athorn who has been a legend today. Mr T.
I wasn't going to announce it yet, but as it's now available for pre-order on Amazon, I'm really proud to announce I have a book of my poems coming out on June 28th!
Hope no one minds me saying on here how proud I am of my eldest, who's got top marks in his A Levels. He's off to Newcastle to study media in September.
Kids settled and ready for tea. All happy and settled in their rooms and the hotel is amazing. We have a corridor just for us and you need a key to get on to it. Lots of comments about the fantastic behaviour. ❤️
Can I say a massive thanks to the staff who gave up their time to come on the residential. They did two nights away from family, and were on duty for pretty much 55 hours straight! It's a privilege and pleasure to do it but I'm very grateful for them volunteering.
We would just like to thank our parents for the support you have given school today it is very much appreciated. Wewill inform you of the findings when the report comes out. Our children were amazing and as usual made us proud❤️❤️❤️❤️
For those not returning on Monday we wish you all well and hope to see you very soon. Keep safe and look after your lovely families. Today was difficult but this will soon be a distant memory. We expect regular updates from all your lovely activities ❤️❤️
We couldn’t have asked for a better first day. The children have made us proud and have had a great time. Looking forward to doing it all again tomorrow. 🌈❤️🌈❤️🌈❤️
The Library is finished apart from some labels. Over 5000 books all ready to be borrowed after half term. Looking forward to seeing some art work of the children's favourite book characters on the walls.
After one of the most difficult mornings we have had in our careers Emails like this are what makes us love our school and makes our jobs worthwhile ❤️
We think it's safe to say that we're all-clear of the possibility of having to contact anyone about positive tests linked to school.

. Have an amazing Christmas everyone and see you on the other side.
Wow ! Every child asleep no tears but lots of snoring. We are so proud of these children. People commented at the theatre wants a pleasure they were ❤️❤️❤️❤️
It's finally Friday, and it's been a very busy, hectic and tiring week for everyone, so I just wanted to say a big thank you to all the staff for their patience, hard work and amazing flexibility.
A few pics from yesterday's Hallowe'en lunch. Julia was in from 5.30am doing the buns, so a huge thanks to her for the amazing effort she puts in - the kids really love it!
@BarnsleySC
Well, we're well outside the 48hr period from when we were last in school, so there will be no more isolation messages from us. Have a brilliant Summer and see you in September!
Due to the ongoing extreme weather and dangerous conditions, Shawlands will remain closed today. Tomorrow will still be an INSET Day (if we can get in) so pupils will return on Monday. We will try to re-schedule Book Day for a future date. Stay safe, and enjoy the snow.
We have set up a 'Little Library' in the reception area. If you'd like to borrow a book or two just pop in and get them. We have a drop off box for returns so we can quarantine them before putting them back.
All at Shawlands School offer our deepest condolences to members of the Royal Family as we remember the life of HRH Queen Elizabeth II. We will be holding a special commemorative assembly tomorrow afternoon.
Our children have once again made us proud today. To be able to take all the children together is amazing and our very own Miss Hargreaves and PT made it even better. It was very emotional how proud the children were of them and they definitely got the loudest cheer❤️
We had a fantastic assembly about the importance of Remembrance Day from an ex-serviceman today. The children did really well with the drill and two-minute's silence.
Morning everyone. We hope that anyone self-isolating is as well as they can be and making good use of the online resources available. We fully support anyone's decision to not be in school, but also want to celebrate that we have 88% attendance today which is amazing!
Our very talented Catering Team entered 'The Eat them to Defeat Them' Caterers Challenge & we're really proud to say that for the 2nd year in a row, they've achieved 1 of 20 places in the Hall of Fame. They also won £100 & 2 framed certificates to display in school. Well done!
So despite being allergic to cats, I've been 'persuaded' to get two kittens. So in two weeks or so we'll be saying hello to Isco and Ezra at chez Thompson. They're special low-allergen cats, or so I'm told.
@Mc2000Mrs
Best advice I ever had, and it has always worked, is let them get it all out without interrupting. Their volume gradually decreases and they run out of things to say. Once they've finished, start to reply.
Oh, and we officially opened the refurbished staff room to thank you for the dedication and hard work of all staff through Covid. Funded through capital funding which is for the upkeep & development of the school building. Thanks to Mr Ford for working all summer to complete it
Well done to our brilliant staff Netball team who played the last game of the season tonight. They've improved throughout the season and proved very hard to beat!
Fantastic to see everyone back in school today with lots of happy smiling faces and children happy to see each other again. We've got 98% attendance in KS1, and 95% in KS2 which is amazing! Watch out for a newsletter later today with some updates on.
We have an unbelievable 99% attendance in school today! 100% in KS2, 98% in EYFS and KS1. As usual, school is full of the sounds of happy, engaged children!
Everyone's back in from lunchtime and for the first day back it was pretty smooth running. Thanks to the dinner staff and midday supervisors for running with the plans and solving any issues as they cropped up. Was great to see the children chatting and playing together again!
30 members of staff having flu jabs this morning, and everyone's being very brave! Attendance this week is still great - even though we have children and a staff member self isolating due contact with +ve cases, we are feeling blessed not to have had a +ve case in school as yet.
We had our first fire practice today, and the whole school was assembled, social-distance style, in 3 mins and 16 seconds. The school building was empty in 2 minutes. The children were really sensible and calm (of course!)
We are on the coach on the way home will tweet an estimated arrival when we are half way and keep you updated. What an amazing few days with amazing children ❤️
Last week the children all sent me smiley faces with pictures of writing of what makes them happy, which I have turned into a new version of the poem 'Happiness Is...' Hope you like it.
On tomorrow's newsletter I will be announcing that after an interview process yesterday, Mrs Athorn has been made Deputy Headteacher of school. Congratulations to her, and I am looking forward to working with her to continue Shawlands' journey forwards!
It is lovely to see all your home learning but remember it isn’t everything. Spend the time keeping your family safe and enjoy your time together ❤️💚❤️💚❤️
We would like to wish all our families a very happy Christmas. Thank you for a lovely term and for your continued support. We will see you all safely back in the new year after a lovely break 🎄❤️💕
Morning. Thanks for the messages of support we've had from everyone as we roll out online learning and Key Worker groups from today. Class teachers and senior leaders will be sending messages out through the day with more information so please bear with us!
I've spent the weekend looking at the pupil surveys. My favourite bits so far are the Y2 child who put her favourite thing about Shawlands is the register, and the Y6 pupil who has asked for a hot tub on the Toppy.
One sad side effect of the current situation is that Miss Adams who has been doing teaching practice in Peacocks, and Miss Gravestock who has been in Reception will be leaving us tomorrow. They have both been fantastic and we wish them all the best for the future!
