GOOD NEWS: Up to hundreds of animals per year will be saved from cruel tests 🐭 This is thanks to a new ANIMAL-FREE research fund that @UWMadison's Food Research Institute created for its corporate sponsors after hearing from PETA 👉🏾

Good empathetic take from @neiltyson
Super Sunday. Good day for Football. Bad day for Chickens. Indeed, every day is a bad day for Chickens. While you gnosh on wings today I offer this annual reminder that in the US, we lay, hatch, grow, slaughter, bring to market, buy, cook, and eat, one million chickens per hour.

JUST IN: Animal tests can harm YOU 👇🏾
Risky, misleading data: "Non-predictive animal experiments can cause human suffering in two main ways: [1] by producing inaccurate safety and efficacy data, and [2] by diverting resources away from more effective testing methods and potentially abandoning beneficial treatments."

Animals value their lives & freedom and don't view them as an "option" for humans to choose or not choose on the momentary whim of a taste bud. In a non-survival situation of typical life, if you value freedom, this should apply universally to all species, not only to a humans.
Meat eaters are better hosts because they care about providing vegetarian options to their guests but the same hospitality is not extended by vegetarians (to serve meat options).

Less money going into animal experimenters' pockets 👏🏾 Now cut all funding to animal tests.
Last year, $9B of the $35B that the National Institutes of Health (NIH) granted for research was used for administrative overhead, what is known as “indirect costs.” Today, NIH lowered the maximum indirect cost rate research institutions can charge the government to 15%, above what many major foundations allow and much lower than the 60%+ that some institutions charge the government today. This change will save more than $4B a year effective immediately.

BREAKING: @RepTroyNehls & @repdinatitus reintroduce bipartisan, PETA-backed CARGO Act to stop @NIH from wasting billions of tax $$ on overseas animal testing.

VICTORY: @kewpie_official has updated its public policy to ban all animal testing that isn’t required by law, following pressure from PETA. The company previously funded unrequired tests that involved injecting mice with cancer cells & more.

@stormnyx_ FYI, 7 BILLION day-old male chicks are burned, drowned, or dumped alive into metal grinders by the egg industry each year because they can't lay eggs. Please, consider going vegan.

Hi @PostMalone, let's talk about your new @Oreo collaboration -- the company that makes this cookie conducts horrific tests on animals. Please urge @MDLZ to end its animal testing 👉🏾

Victory: The Food Research Institute (FRI) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison has formally established a new animal-free fund for corporate sponsors in apparent response to PETA pressure, per records we received. The new fund titled, “Food Research Institute Programmatic (Non-animal) Support Fund,” states that "this Fund is to support research that does not involve animal testing and general department operations at the Food Research Institute." This fund is dedicated to animal-free research and has allowed several FRI sponsors—including PepsiCo. Inc., Campbell Soup Company, Fresh Innovations, Sensient Technologies, AmeriQual Group, and Tribe 9 Foods—to restrict their funding away from animal testing upon requests by PETA. There’s still more work to do to get the institute to end its tests on animals (which have included force-feeding pregnant monkeys whipping cream contaminated with listeria bacteria, injecting mice with botulinum bacteria and waiting for them to die, etc), but this is good progress. Onwards!

In @JournalofEthics: "It’s time we stopped thinking of [nonhuman primate] research as something of value and recognize it for what it is: a practice that future generations will ... look back on with incredulity and regret." -@D_Mand_MD, @ERoseEngland 👏🏾

@TateTheTalisman Do you oppose animal testing? Billions of tax dollars are wasted on this cruelty that overwhelmingly fails to yield human-relevant results due to physiological, neurological, immunological, anatomic & metabolic differences between species. A better way 👉🏾

@WilliamFONeill @WhiteCoatWaste Yes, and can also check out @peta and @pcrm too. Lots of good work is being done in this area to end animal tests, which is great.
