Percussionist Kyungho Jeon, who was born blind, used to think his dream of playing in an orchestra was impossible.
So he helped create a new type of baton that lets him feel, rather than see, a conductor's movements - and now he can play with an ensemble:
🤬 “I was covered in dirt, ashes, my eyes, my mouth, everything. I was just so thirsty,” Cabrera, who entered a hotel in search of water, said. “And there were hundreds of tourists drinking, having fun and not even caring.”
“I think the biggest worry was when we have bodies in that ocean that still had not been discovered, and for us to see them snorkeling when we still haven't retrieved all our dead — that was hard," one local said.

People need to understand “vulnerable populations” aren’t groups at the bottom or far away from you. At the rate the way the state is completely dismantling public health measures & abandoning the most marginalized, pretty soon EVERYONE will become VULNERABLE. That means YOU.
Make no mistake - the CDC decision to change Covid isolation from 5 days to 1 day is an economic & political one. It’s NOT about health and it will kill & disable people. It’s to push people back to work & drive the narrative that Covid is only a risk to the “vulnerable” /1 🧵
So many people don’t have a dentist, can’t afford regular cleanings, and/or have chronic illnesses or poor nutrition that makes dental care even more important
The healthcare system is fucked

So high risk folks are just expected to what, stay home forever (not possible for many), constantly negotiate (often unsuccessfully) to exist in public spaces like everyone else, and bear the burden in protecting ourselves & others, right?
We're not exactly people in your eyes
COVID-19 remains a real threat for high risk folks
Keeping up with vaccines, getting treated when infected is how we manage that risk
This new guidance, aligned with that of the flu,
Acknowledges the burdens and benefits of isolation
And that makes for good guidance

This is incredibly disheartening. We deserve disabled leaders that have compassion for everyone and not degrading and dehumanizing anyone. Anything less than that isn’t disability justice.
We’re supposed to be at home because we’re too disabled to do anything
If we dared go outside to protest or *gasp* work, then maybe we’re exaggerating & faking our disabilities/high risk status opening us up for scrutiny & surveillance
Ableism & fascism go hand in hand
I spoke with someone in a NY Democratic legislators office yesterday who basically said this and defended problematic mask ban bill A10057A. They didn’t think anyone wearing a mask for health reasons should be attending large gatherings like protests.

Disabled people aren’t interested in “conversations” with total strangers about our disabilities. The power dynamic of who gets to ask a question and who is expected to reply is rooted in ableism, racism, sexism
So DON’T
