What’s Next in Manipur After Biren Singh’s Resignation? The political situation in #Manipur is growing more complex following the resignation of Chief Minister @NBirenSingh. Inside the #BJP, two factions have emerged. According to a highly placed source, one faction led by Thokchom Satyabrata Singh, the Speaker of the Manipur Legislative Assembly, includes several other MLAs. On the other hand, Biren Singh’s supporters, including prominent leaders like Thongam Biswajit Singh, Govindas Konthoujam, Sapam Ranjan Singh, Heikham Dingo Singh, Laimayum Geetamanjan, and four MLAs from the Naga People's Front (#NPF), form the opposing camp. Satyabrata’s faction is supported by Kuki MLAs, while the role of Sharda Devi, the state president of BJP Manipur, and four #npp MLAs will be crucial in the formation of the new government. Senior BJP leader Sambit Patra is also expected to remain in Manipur until a new government is established. Currently the situation in the state remains calm for now. #ManipurViolence #BirenSingh #ManipurTapes

Manipur Governor revokes assembly session order following CM Biren Singh’s resignation. In a major political development, Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla has revoked the earlier order summoning the 7th Session of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly. The decision, made under Clause (1) of Article 174 of the Constitution of India, effectively nullifies the previous order dated January 24, 2025, which had called for the session. The revocation comes immediately after the resignation of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, triggering political uncertainty in the state. While the exact reason for the cancellation of the session has not been disclosed, the move is seen as a direct fallout of the CM’s resignation, which has sent shockwaves through Manipur’s political landscape. Political observers believe that the decision could impact the formation of the next government, with discussions now focused on who will lead the state moving forward. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is expected to hold internal deliberations, while opposition parties are also strategizing their next moves. With this sudden turn of events, Manipur is set for an intense phase of political maneuvering. Further developments are awaited as the state gears up for a leadership transition.

Politics Behind N. Biren Singh’s Resignation On February 9, 2025, Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh submitted his resignation to the Governor in Imphal, accompanied by BJP National Spokesperson Sambit Patra. This marked the end of his tenure after nearly one year, eight months, and 18 days of relentless political and public pressure. His resignation raises a crucial question—why did it take so long? Since May 2023, Manipur has witnessed one of its worst crises, with 221 people killed, around 60,000 displaced, 4,786 houses burned, and 386 religious structures—including churches and temples—vandalized. Over 1,000 people were injured, yet Biren Singh refused to step down or take responsibility. On July 1, 2023, in a dramatic public display, he tore up his resignation letter, claiming that the people of Manipur did not allow him to resign. But what exactly led to his sudden resignation on February 9, 2025? The Power Struggle Behind His Exit On February 4, 2025, Manipur Legislative Assembly Speaker Thokchom Satyabrata Singh met Home Minister Amit Shah at his residence in Delhi and threatened mass resignations. He warned that if N. Biren Singh were not removed as Chief Minister, all BJP MLAs from Manipur would quit the party. A no-confidence motion against N. Biren Singh was scheduled to be tabled in the Manipur Legislative Assembly on February 10, 2025. On February 8, 2025, Amit Shah summoned Biren Singh to Delhi. He immediately took a chartered flight in the evening and met the Home Minister. On February 9, 2025, Biren Singh returned to Manipur with Sambit Patra. Upon reaching Imphal, he returned to the Governor’s House and submitted his resignation. His departure wasn’t voluntary—it is a result of immense pressure from within his party. The BJP leadership had little choice but to force his exit as discontent among Manipur’s MLAs reached a breaking point.
