I’m proud of our ed leaders across the state. Everyone has been working triple OT since last week to support local communities. I’ve had calls and emails with many supts last/this wknd discussing waivers, days, etc. Make the best choice for kids. Period. We will figure it out.

Abbie on her second 1st day of kindergarten! She asked for two bows in her hair this morning for extra confidence. Then, when the principal opened the car door to let her out, she said, “ I’m Abbie and I’m amazing. Let’s do this!” So yeah, not worried.

As an educator and parent, our actions at TDOE in responding to COVID-19 must be based solely on student safety and access to nutrition. Since our call with supts on Friday, we have seen many decisions to close schools and TDOE will fully support our districts in those decisions.

And, today was different than our daughter’s adoption. It had face masks, plastic shields, construction from the damage over the weekend, family on FaceTime, and our kids in a frame. It was very 2020, but it was full of love and joy. I will remember that. There’s nothing like it.

We are sad to announce that our friend, mentor and boss, Dr. Linda Gilbert, passed away earlier this afternoon. Dr. Gilbert has served MCS & the community with compassion and fervor for many years. She was a dedicated mother, grandmother and educator and will be truly missed.

One of our exceptional TN bus drivers! Stephanie heard there was a young student missing, kept an eye out for that student on her route, saw the student far from home and got him to safety. No one asked Stephanie to do that; she went above and beyond, like so many do, for kids.

For many, being a teacher is who you are, not what you do. My mom might be retired, but she jumped right in to do daily science lessons with my girls during closures. So many teachers are doing what needs to be done because that’s who they are. Thank you!
